Thoughts On Patents And Information Literacy, Dave Zwicky 2019 Purdue University

Thoughts On Patents And Information Literacy, Dave Zwicky

Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association

Patents are an under-used information source, in part because of an often-narrow focus by patent librarians on the tools and techniques of patentability searching. This approach can ignore a range of potential applications of patent information, using patents in their contexts as technical, design, historical, legal, and commercial documents. This paper suggests the adoption of a flexible approach, viewing patents and patent information in the greater context of information literacy, including that of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, more commonly known as the ACRL Framework.

Question Answering For Suicide Risk Assessment Using Reddit, Amanuel Alambo, Usha Lokala, Ugur Kursuncu, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Amelia Gyrard, Randon S. Welton, Jyotishman Pathak, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Mental Health America designed ten questionnaires that are used to determine the risk of mental disorders. They are also commonly used by Mental Health Professionals (MHPs) to assess suicidality. Specifically, the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), a widely used suicide assessment questionnaire, helps MHPs determine the severity of suicide risk and offer an appropriate treatment. A major challenge in suicide treatment is the social stigma wherein the patient feels reluctance in discussing his/her conditions with an MHP, which leads to inaccurate assessment and treatment of patients. On the other hand, the same patient is comfortable freely discussing his ...

Finding Truth In Fake News: Reverse Plagiarism And Other Models Of Classification, Matthew Przybyla, David Tran, Amber Whelpley, Daniel W. Engels 2019 Southern Methodist University

Finding Truth In Fake News: Reverse Plagiarism And Other Models Of Classification, Matthew Przybyla, David Tran, Amber Whelpley, Daniel W. Engels

SMU Data Science Review

As the digital age creates new ways of spreading news, fake stories are propagated to widen audiences. A majority of people obtain both fake and truthful news without knowing which is which. There is not currently a reliable and efficient method to identify “fake news”. Several ways of detecting fake news have been produced, but the various algorithms have low accuracy of detection and the definition of what makes a news item ‘fake’ remains unclear. In this paper, we propose a new method of detecting on of fake news through comparison to other news items on the same topic, as ...

Empathi: An Ontology For Emergency Managing And Planning About Hazard Crisis, Manas Gaur, Kaeedeh Shekarpour, Amelia Gyrard, Amit P. Sheth 2019 Wright State University - Main Campus

Empathi: An Ontology For Emergency Managing And Planning About Hazard Crisis, Manas Gaur, Kaeedeh Shekarpour, Amelia Gyrard, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

In the domain of emergency management during hazard crises, having sufficient situational awareness information is critical. It requires capturing and integrating information from sources such as satellite images, local sensors and social media content generated by local people.
A bold obstacle to capturing, representing and integrating such heterogeneous and diverse information is lack of a proper ontology which properly conceptualizes this domain, aggregates and unifies datasets. Thus, in this paper, we introduce empathi ontology which conceptualizes the core concepts describing the domain of emergency managing and planning of hazard crises.
Although empathi has a coarse-grained view, it considers the necessary ...

Accurate Magneto-Optical Determination Of Radius Of Topological Nodal-Ring Semimetals, Wenye Duan, Cuihong Yang, Zhongshui Ma, Yiming Zhu, C Zhang 2019 University of Wollongong

Accurate Magneto-Optical Determination Of Radius Of Topological Nodal-Ring Semimetals, Wenye Duan, Cuihong Yang, Zhongshui Ma, Yiming Zhu, C Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The shape of the Fermi surface of topological nodal-ring semimetals at low carrier concentrations is characterized by the ring radius b/ℏvF. This peculiar topological property may not have a clear signature in measurable physical quantities. We demonstrate an accurate and definitive method to determine the radius of topological nodal-ring semimetals. Under a magnetic field along the ring axis, the axial magneto-optical response (σzz) has a giant peak. The position of this ultrastrong response is at the frequency of exactly 2b and is independent of the strength of the magnetic field. The amplitude of the peak response is many times ...

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

As a common disease, hypertension (HTN) can lead to severe complications such as heart failure, renal failure and stroke. However, delayed diagnosis often happens because of no obvious symptoms in earlier stage. This paper addresses the issue through a novel cloud based auxiliary medical system for HTN. Nowadays, telemedicine has been used to diagnose and monitor HTN by sharing and consulting personal health status with doctors. Its high flexibility and processing ability have helped to reduce the overall cost of medical care and enhanced the control rate. Technically, telemedicine uses communication, holographic imaging and computer science to achieve the management ...

Pickles And Pastrami: The Core Of The American Jew, Theo Satloff 2019 Colby College

Pickles And Pastrami: The Core Of The American Jew, Theo Satloff

Honors Theses

This thesis argues the there is a strong, interdependent relationship between the creation of the American Jewish deli and the growth and progress of the food technology, food safety, and society within American life. The importance of recognizing the Jewish deli as a key element in tracing the history of American life post-1800s has been underemphasized throughout the deli’s entire existence. Jewish delis represented the intersection of centuries-old technologies and modern innovations, the meeting of centuries-old cultures and new communities, and formed the basis for a force that would have an outsized impact on American politics thereafter.

High Sensitive Sensing By A Laser Diode With Dual Optical Feedback Operating At Period-One Oscillation, Yuxi Ruan, Bin Liu, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi, Qinghua Guo, Jun Tong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Laser dynamics have great potential for various applications, ranging from cryptography to microwave photonics and instrumentation. This letter presents a design for achieving high sensitive sensing and measurement using the dynamics of a laser diode (LD) with a dual external cavity. In the design, one cavity is used to control the dynamics, making the LD operate at the period-one (P1) oscillation state, and the other one is associated with the quantities to be measured. The Lang-Kobayashi equations are modified and solved to develop a bifurcation diagram for the design, from which we determine the P1 state and investigate the sensing ...

Metamorphic Testing Of Driverless Cars, Zhi Q. Zhou, Liqun Sun

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

On March 18, 2018, Elaine Herzberg became the first pedestrian in the world to be killed by an autonomous vehicle after being hit by a self-driving Uber SUV in Tempe, AZ, at about 10 p.m. Video released by the local police department showed the self-driving Volvo XC90 did not appear to see Herzberg, as it did not slow down or alter course, even though she was visible in front of the vehicle prior to impact. Subsequently, automotive engineering experts raised questions about Uber's LiDAR technology.12 LiDAR, or "light detection and ranging," uses pulsed laser light to enable ...

Gpr Target Detection By Joint Sparse And Low-Rank Matrix Decomposition, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Canicious Abeynayake 2019 University of Wollongong

Gpr Target Detection By Joint Sparse And Low-Rank Matrix Decomposition, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Canicious Abeynayake

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) uses electromagnetic waves to image, locate, and identify changes in electric and magnetic properties in the ground. The received signal comprises not only the target echoes but also strong reflections from the rough, uneven ground surface, which impair subsurface inspections and visualization of buried objects. In this paper, a background clutter mitigation and target detection method using low-rank and sparse priors is proposed for GPR data. The radar signal is decomposed into the sum of a low-rank component and a sparse component, plus noise. The low-rank component captures the ground surface reflections and background clutter, whereas ...

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A comparative study has been carried out to assess the effect of rolling and annealing processes on ridging generation of ferritic stainless steels (FSSs) 430 and 430LR after tensile deformation. The results show that FSS 430LR has better ridging resistance owing tothe refinement of microstructure and crystallographic texture optimisation. A 30% reduction of ridging height can be achieved using FSS 430LR compared to FSS 430 after tension.Optimal reduction during cold rolling benefits the microstructural refinement and surface quality improvement of FSSs 430 and 430LR. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that the (1 1 2) and the (0 ...

A Secure And Efficient Data Sharing And Searching Scheme In Wireless Sensor Networks, Binrui Zhu, Willy Susilo, Jing Qin, Fuchun Guo, Zhen Zhao, Jixin Ma 2019 Shandong University

A Secure And Efficient Data Sharing And Searching Scheme In Wireless Sensor Networks, Binrui Zhu, Willy Susilo, Jing Qin, Fuchun Guo, Zhen Zhao, Jixin Ma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) generally utilize cloud computing to store and process sensing data in real time, namely, cloud-assisted WSN. However, the cloud-assisted WSN faces new security challenges, particularly outsourced data confidentiality. Data Encryption is a fundamental approach but it limits target data retrieval in massive encrypted data. Public key encryption with keyword search (PEKS) enables a data receiver to retrieve encrypted data containing some specific keyword in cloud-assisted WSN. However, the traditional PEKS schemes suffer from an inherent problem, namely, the keyword guessing attack (KGA). KGA includes off-line KGA and on-line KGA. To date, the existing literature on PEKS ...

Creep In Primary Consolidation With Rate Of Loading Approach, Gang Bi, Shua Ni, Dong Wang, Yeqiang Chen, Jianfei Wei, Wenzong Gong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The debate on creep in primary consolidation is analysed with a power law model following an approach in which creep is considered as rate of loading. According to this approach, primary consolidation is one type of rate of loading. To verify this approach, two types of tests, standard oedometer test and oedometer test with drainage prevented, are conducted on three types of soils (two from NGES and the other from Port of Guangzhou). The result: creep exponents obtained from two kinds of tests agree well with each other. Moreover, the approach is further validated by tracking, for over 80 years ...

Consequence Modelling Of Co2 Pipeline Failure, Xiong Liu, Ajit R. Godbole, Cheng Lu, Guillaume Michal, Valerie M. Linton

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This paper describes the experimental investigation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the dispersion of CO2 following high-pressure dense phase CO2 pipeline failure. A full-scale burst test was carried out to simulate a CO2 pipeline failure in the real world. The atmospheric dispersion of the CO2 following the explosive release was measured. The CFD models were validated against the experimental data. The models were then used to estimate the consequence distances related to CO2 dispersion following failure of pipelines with various diameters under different wind speeds. This approach provides a predictive formula for the consequence distances of CO2 transmission ...
