Robert D. Kaplan: The Ends Of The Earth Study Guide, 2001-2003, Steven Alan Samson

Steven Alan Samson

Robert Kaplan’s writing echoes some of the familiar motifs of literature – particularly the epic or the quest. This is his personal journey, like Marlow’s in The Heart of Darkness or Dante’s in The Inferno. The first chapter title refers to Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy (1768).

Great Ideas/Grand Schemes is a systematic treatment of twelve ideologies by means of an elaborate conceptual framework. This twelve-point analytic grid, which is comprised of six substantive political principles, four philosophical bases, and two political bases, is introduced in the first chapter. Subsequent chapters focus on the ideologies themselves.

M. Stanton Evans: The Theme Is Freedom Study Guide (1995-2004), Steven Alan Samson

Steven Alan Samson

The key political insight of the forgotten conservative tradition is the idea of imposing limits on governmental power, in the interests of protecting freedom. Theses: 1) the limited government, free-market emphasis of conservatism is an expression of conservative values; 2) the traditionalist and libertarian strands in conservative thought are congruent, 3) at issue is the very nature of American society, institutions, and freedom. The Liberal History Lesson (a variation on the Whig Interpretation of History) alleges that religion and liberty have always been in conflict. On the contrary: Conservative doctrine on the relationship between religious value, tradition, and ideas of ...

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Studio and Student Research and Creative Activity

This report documents the work of the Senior Urban Design Studio in Springfield’s Upper Lyman District in downtown Springfield. It is part of the Metro Center neighborhood and adjacent to the Union Station that will be revitalized in 2016. The district is challenged by high vacancies and general abandonment. Housing opportunities and market-rate housing in particular are very low. The primary goal of the project was to develop a staged vision to revitalize and rediscover the Upper Lyman Warehouse District and to improve livability in the heart of downtown Springfield for employers, employees, residents, and visitors. The following recommendations ...

Relating Bike Racks And Bike Ridership, John Sens 2010 University of Nebraska at Lincoln

Relating Bike Racks And Bike Ridership, John Sens

Environmental Studies Undergraduate Student Theses

Abstract The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the relationship between bicycle ridership and bike racks in a given area. The goal was to discern whether or not the density of bike racks determines the number of riders in the area. I predicted that there would be higher ridership in the areas with a denser bike rack concentration. To investigate this point, I set up five different areas of varying sizes with a similar number of bike racks, and then observed them over a period of 5 business days. By using a simple tally of the bikes found on ...

Richard Jackson And Neil Howe: The Graying Of The Great Powers: Study Guide, Steven Alan Samson

Why will religious conflict become an even more serious global problem? Why are the 2020s likely to emerge as the decade of maximum geopolitical danger for the developed world? Why is a “youth echo boom” likely to be a problem during that period? What light is shed on the situation by the “power transition” theories of global conflict? What chronic shortages are likely to be faced by aging develop countries? What will render many developed countries “permanent free riders on their allies?”

David Gress: From Plato To Nato Study Guide, Steven Alan Samson

Steven Alan Samson

Besides being an essay on the concept of the West and the teaching of western civilization, this is a critique of what M. Stanton Evans called “the liberal history lesson” and what David Gress calls “the Grand Narrative.” The ironic title of the book (see page 1) may refer to a 1984 BBC radio series, later published as From Plato to NATO: Studies on Political Thought (1995), by the late British journalist and BBC announcer Brian Redhead. In preparing this study, Dr. Gress acknowledges the influence of Ernest Gellner’s The Conditions of Liberty, Paul Rahe’s Republics Ancient and ...
