In this qualitative study, the researcher investigated four aspects of positioning used by teacher and ESL students in a mid-south state of the United States. This study was based on the Positioning Theory of Davies and Harré (1990). The study aimed to explore various types of positioning used by the participants and how they impacted social interactions among the students and between them and their teacher. Knowing multiple languages, having a higher level of emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity are positive traits to carry in today’s globalizing world. The present study looked at emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity levels between monolinguals and multilinguals. Participants participated through an electronic survey that included demographic questions pertaining to participant’s language knowledge, and standardized measures for emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity. Results did not indicate a statistically significant relationship of emotional intelligence between monolinguals and multilinguals. Previous studies have revealed the complexity of Mandarin Tones. For example, similarities in the pitch contours of tones 2 and 3 and tones 3 and 4 cause confusion for listeners. The realization of a tone's contour is highly dependent on its context, especially the preceding pitch. This is known as the coarticulation effect. Researchers have demonstrated the robustness of tone perception by both native and non-native listeners, even with incomplete acoustic information or in noisy environment. This dissertation examines the Chinese practice of adopting English names in the context of Chinese international students studying at American institutions of higher education. This investigation demonstrates the effectiveness of Legendre polynomial coefficients representing prosodic contours within the context of two different tasks: nativeness classification and sarcasm detection. By making use of accurate representations of prosodic contours to answer fundamental linguistic questions, we contribute significantly to the body of research focused on analyzing prosody in linguistics as well as modeling prosody for machine learning tasks. There are two major perspectives regarding heritage speakers’ (henceforth HS) ultimate attainment. Some researchers on HS in the U.S. conclude that HS have incomplete grammars (Benmamoun, Montrul & Polinsky, 2013). It is argued that heritage languages (henceforth HL) do not fully develop (Montrul, 2016), and they are not completely acquired because of shifting to a dominant language (Benmamoun et al., 2013). The Language Archive at the Max Planck Institute Nijmegen (https://archive.mpi.nl) is an extensive online repository of language resources. The archive was developed using in-house solutions, including metadata creation tools, depositing tools and an archive-browser. Development had been going on for more than 15 years, but was difficult and expensive to maintain. Additionally, some of these tools had were fairly complex to use, not meeting current user needs. Therefore, the choice was made to migrate to a more sustainable open-source solution, easier to use, maintain and to develop upon.

Objectives: To examine maturation of neural discriminative responses to an English vowel contrast from infancy to 4 years of age and to determine how biological factors (age and sex) and an experiential factor (amount of Spanish versus English input) modulate neural discrimination of speech.

Design: Event-related potential (ERP) mismatch responses (MMRs) were used as indices of discrimination of the American English vowels [ε] versus [I] in infants and children between 3 months and 47 months of age. Individuals in a community interact with others in small and large social groupings. Such interactions provide a wealth of information that can be exploited in multiple ways. In this paper, we investigate the social networks of Nepali students at St. Cloud State University, a comprehensive university in central Minnesota, USA. The participants are 10 males and 9 females. Their responses to survey/interview questions serve as the basis for this research. Russian is known as a true voice language with pre-voicing of voiced stops and no aspiration. It has been noted in many linguistic studies that the native language plays an important role in second language acquisition. There is a study which shows that people continue using their L1 processing strategies of linguistic information to communicate in their second language (Culter and Norris, 1988; Koda, 1997). Richards (2012) and Zhang (n.d.) report that some Chinese L2 speakers of English confuse /l/ and /n/. Koffi (2019:249-50) indicates that some acoustic correlates of /l/ and /n/ produced by Mandarin 6F, 8M, 9M, and 17M mask each other. Longitudinal acquisitions of English vowels have been previously studied by Monroe (2008), Lai (2010), and others. Most of these studies rely primarily on an impressionistic methodology, i.e., native speaking judges listen to oral inputs by non-native speakers and rate the intelligibility of their vowels on a Likert scale.
