Between Text And Film: A Contextual Bifurcation In Feliz Ano Velho, Andrew M. Ray 2009 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

Between Text And Film: A Contextual Bifurcation In Feliz Ano Velho, Andrew M. Ray

Andrew M. Ray

The present study problematizes the results in character development due to differences in the use of historical and amorous contexts between the text, Feliz Ano Velho (1982), and its film adaptation, Feliz ano vehlo: uma adaptação livre da obra de Marcelo R. Paiva. Whereas Marcelo Rubens Paiva (1959) constructs a textual mosaic of life experiences based on historical and political frames of reference within his discourse, the film version of Feliz Ano Velho (1987), directed by Roberto Gervitz (1957), utilizes relationships between genders as the foundation of the story. The historical-amorous contextual hierarchy established in the text is thus inverted ...

Using Ning For Conversation Partner Networks, Krista Bittenbender 2009 University of South Florida

Using Ning For Conversation Partner Networks, Krista Bittenbender

Krista Bittenbender Royal

Providing opportunities for conversation practice is one way that an IEP can help students improve their English as well as enhance their engagement in the language learning process. However, matching individual language learners to fluent English speakers can be difficult and time consuming. This workshop will introduce participants involved in setting up such interactions to Ning, a free online social networking platform which can facilitate the creation of individualized networks. Participants will gain insights into how one IEP used Ning to connect ELLs to university students interested in having conversation partners.

Reductionism, Activity Theory, And L2 Motivation Research: Toward New Concepts And Definitions, Tae-Young Kim Dr.

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This paper focuses on the theoretical foundation of second language (L2) learning motivation from a Vygotskian Activity Theory (AT) perspective. In general, previous L2 motivation research adopted either psychometric or sociological approaches, which have not fully considered the mediational process between individual learners and their meaningful environments. Since L2 motivation reflects learners’ histories and sociocultural contexts, it is crucial to approach this from an AT perspective. After critiquing current L2 motivation research using Valsiner and van der Veer’s (2000) argument of downward/upward reductionism, I introduce the notion of L2 motivation as social mediation and discuss the applicability of ...

Discursive Constructions Of Global War And Terror, Adam Hodges 2009 Carnegie Mellon University

Discursive Constructions Of Global War And Terror, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

In this chapter, I examine the dialogic connections involved in the global interchange of ideas about terrorism and the ‘war on terror.’ Discourse moves across national boundaries in a manner that shapes global relations and actions, and reshapes the dialogue that takes place within local contexts. To explore these processes, I discuss three contexts in detail. In the first, I examine recent work by Zala Volcic and Karmen Erjavec on the appropriation of the Bush administration’s ‘war on terror’ discourse by Serbian intellectuals (Volcic and Erjavec 2007, Erjavec and Volcic 2007). These young Serbs incorporate this discourse into their ...
