Getting Beyond “Both Sides”: Fyc Instructors & Librarians Working Together To Cultivate Critical Information Literacy With Popular Sources, Loring Pfeiffer, Julia Voss, Nicole Branch

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Last fall, our team of two FYC instructors and one librarian implemented curriculum designed to develop students’ critical information-literacy skills in relation to popular sources. Preliminary results of our work suggest that students’ work with popular sources falls short of CWPA and ACRL goals. In our workshop-style presentation, we ask how other conference attendees instruct students in the assessment and use of popular sources and discuss the pedagogical strategies that we plan to use as we iterate on our work.

Health Information Literacy On The Risks Of Using Skin Bleaching Products, Olufemi K. Aramide Phd, Olusoji S. Olatunji, Olusola Ayandele

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Information enables individuals to develop knowledge which can influence their health behavior and attitude while inadequate literacy about health information is associated with poor understanding of medical advice and negative health outcomes among the population. Skin bleaching is a health practice involving the (mis)use of chemical solutions to change one’s complexion to a lighter tone. This paper investigated the viability of using the concept of health information literacy to reduce skin bleaching by reviewing previous empirical studies on skin bleaching with emphasis on health information. Finding showed that skin bleaching is driven by a self-destructive, unattainable beauty standard ...

The Potential Of Industry Standards In Undergraduate Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Alyson Vaaler, David Hubbard 2019 Purdue University

The Potential Of Industry Standards In Undergraduate Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips, Alyson Vaaler, David Hubbard

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding and the ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula ...

Articulating The Value Of Our Daily Work: An Initial Discussion Of The Assessment Challenges Of Engineering Librarians, Amy G. Buhler, Margaret Phillips, Amy Van Epps

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Engineering librarians need to assess the effectiveness of our library instruction and outreach for many reasons, including communicating library value to institutional stakeholders and making impactful contributions to the scholarly literature. However, as practitioners, most librarians have not been formally educated in research design, data collection, and data analysis. To increase our skills and knowledge and to better align with various publication expectations and guidelines (e.g., ELD Author Guidelines), this panel will lead a discussion on library assessment needs with regard to research design, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination and discovery. The goal of the panel is to ...

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at the University of Dayton Libraries began using Archive-It to capture websites relevant to their collecting policies in 2015. However, the collections were only made available to users from the University of Dayton page on the Archive-It website. Content was isolated in a separate platform and was not promoted to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the web archive collections into the Libraries’ EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) discovery layer. A local data dictionary was created based on OCLC ...
