This project focuses on the flexibility of web GIS’ integration at a small scale. The study area of this project was on Belize’s tropical island, Long Caye. Its private owners sought to share its features to adventurous tourists and potential land investors. The effectiveness of its low-quality geographic information delivery and lack of a centralized source for property data were problematic for management to reach higher efficiency levels. The 52,830-acre Mammoth Cave National Park, located in the karst region of south-central Kentucky, was formally established in July of 1941, culminating nearly three decades of park creation that displaced several thousand residents of the region. This thesis sampled residents using the 1920 manuscript census for the United States Census of Population and Housing and tracked their migration destinations using the 1930 and 1940 manuscript censuses. Migration patterns for the entire sample, as well as by race and homeownership status, were identified through mapping. Using species distribution models (SDMs) in Natural History Collections (NHCs) can influence how humans implement conservation changes in flora and fauna communities and ecosystems. The deer tick (Ixodes scapularis or I. scapularis), also known as the black-legged tick, is the primary vector that transmits Lyme Disease (LD) in Northeastern United States. To contain the geographic expansion of Lyme disease ticks across the US in recent decades, ecological studies have been conducted to understand the biotic and abiotic environmental factors affecting tick activity. Recent shifts in global forest area highlight the importance of understanding the causes and consequences of forest change. To examine the influence of several potential drivers of forest cover change, we used supervised classifications of historical (1938–1940) and contemporary (2015) aerial imagery covering a 2932‐km2study area in the northern Front Range (NFR) of Colorado and we linked observed changes in forest cover with abiotic factors, land use, and fire history. This paper uses hydrologic modeling methods to determine the effects of dam removal in Lansing, Michigan, on the streamflow of the Grand River, flooding risks, and flood mitigation strategies. In Michigan, more than one-half of the state’s dam infrastructure is more than 50 years old, and more than one-third are classified as having a moderate-to high-risk potential. This work presents methods for combining time-variable gravimetry, altimetry, and GNSS bedrock motion data to distinguish sources of mass change in Antarctica with enhanced spatial resolution. GRACE gravimetry provided direct measurements of mass variation of the Antarctic Ice Sheet at monthly timescales between 2002 and 2017, but was limited to a spatial resolution of ~300 km. Laser altimetry from ICESat (2003-2009) provided elevation change measurements at fine spatial resolution, better resolving the spatially concentrated sources of Antarctic mass loss, but with sparse temporal sampling. Terrain is commonly modeled in GIScience on a grid of pixels, assuming that elevation values are constant within any single pixel of a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) (a ‘rigid pixel’ paradigm). This paradigm can generate imprecise measurements because it does not account for the slope and curvature of the terrain within each pixel. In the Great Basin region of the Western United States, the establishment of cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), an invasive annual grass, has dramatically affected native sagebrush steppe ecosystems. Greenway implementation in city-regions is a collective action involving a complex range of relations between regional and local agencies, between government departments at the same administrative level, and between adjacent jurisdictions. This paper explores how greenway implementation governance is structured, and why different governance structures result in different greenway implementation processes and outcomes in a city-region.
