This paper describes an interdisciplinary activity that crosses over between Mathematics and Rhetoric. The professors who created this activity both sought active-learning opportunities for their students, a sense of realism--even urgency--in what can otherwise be perceived as abstract material, and a meaningful liberal arts experience. Evidence of the power of this experience is seen in the media coverage, both from our college and from the Portland Press Herald newspaper. As a group, the artists educated near the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries possessed greater mathematical knowledge than expected of artists today, especially regarding constructive skills in Euclidean geometry. Educational theory of the time stressed such skills for students in general, who needed these to enter the workplace of the time. Mathematics teaching then stressed the use of manipulatives, i.e., visual and interactive aids thought to better fix the student’s acquisition of mathematical skills. In this paper, the pure product singular value decomposition (PSVD) for four quaternion matrices is given. The system of coupled Sylvester-type quaternion matrix equations with five unknowns $X_{i}A_{i}-B_{i}X_{i+1}=C_{i}$ is considered by using the PSVD approach, where $A_{i},B_{i},$ and $C_{i}$ are given quaternion matrices of compatible sizes $(i=1,2,3,4)$. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution to this system are derived. Moreover, the general solution to this system is presented when it is solvable.

The method of singular surfaces is used to obtain explicit conditions under which a one-dimensional acceleration wave develops into a shock when some dissipation mechanism is present. The conditions which secure the initial growth of the strong shock wave propagating into an undeformed nonlinear and dissipative medium are also derived. The analysis is pre- sented for a single balance law, one-dimensional elasticity, and the non- linear Maxwellian continuum.

In longitudinal studies, we observe the subjects who are likely to progress to a new state during the study time. For example, in clinical trials the stage of a progressing disease is recorded at each follow-up visit. The primary goal is to estimate the relationship between the attributes and the subject's progression state. In this thesis we consider ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with random parameters. We focus on Monte Carlo (MC) sampling for computing the statistics of some quantities of interest (QoIs) given by the solution of the ODE problems. We use the 4th order accurate Runge-Kutta (RK4) method as the deterministic ODE solver. We then develop a hybrid MC sampling method that combines RK4 with neural network models to efficiently compute the statistics of QoIs within a desired accuracy. Snow loads in the western United States are largely undefined due to complex geography and climates, leaving the individual states to publish detailed studies for their region, usually through the local Structural Engineers Association (SEAs). The Ultimatum Game is a two-person, multiple-strategy game widely used in the experimental social sciences to demonstrate the human propensity for costly punishment in response to inequitable treatment. The game serves to provide quantitative evidence for a diversity of fairness norms across cultures. The play of the game and its interpretation offer nuanced views of the nature and importance of quantitative literacy. Its use in a writing seminar connecting quantitative literacy and social justice is described.

In this paper we analyze various methods used for semantic annotation and search in a collection of art and architecture images. We discuss the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, WordNet, ULAN and Iconclass ontology. Systems for searching and retrieval art and architecture image collections are presented. We explore if the MPEG 7 descriptors are useful for art and architecture image annotations. For illustrations we use images from Antoni Gaudi architecture and Claude Monet paintings.
