#### Influence Of Energy Policy On The Rate Of Implementation Of Biogas Power Plants In Germany During The 2001-2010 Decade, Izabela Chasiak, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

*Wojciech Budzianowski*

The current article describes energy policy tools, which caused intensive development of biogas-based power generation in Germany during the 2001-2010 decade. The German system of financial support to biogas power plants is presented in details. It is shown that in Germany, i.e. in a country characterised by similar climate and potentials to renewable energy to Poland, biogas power plants cover 10,7% of electricity demands in 2010, while all renewable energy sources cover only 5,4% of electricity demands. It is emphasised that under favourable Polish energy policy, the development of biogas energy can be very rapid.

Regularization Schemes For The Real Time Spatial Management Of Pelagic Longline Fisheries, 2011 University of Puget Sound

#### Regularization Schemes For The Real Time Spatial Management Of Pelagic Longline Fisheries, Kyle Egerdal

*Summer Research*

Pelagic bycatch, or the catching of unwanted ocean fish, is an issue that managers of modern-day fishing operations are seeking to ameliorate. Using the relative fish prevalence at various temperature levels, we developed a habitat climatology allowing visualization of the expected distribution of the bycatch species throughout the fishing season. These distributions were used to allocate fishing zones such that only fisherman with catch quotas are able to fish in areas where bycatch is likely. Through both real and theoretical ocean temperature data, we explored the costs and benefits of many methods for allocating these fishing zones. The results of ...

On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, 2011 Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

#### On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov

*Articles*

Nonholonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called “squared solutions” (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to a perturbed model with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV6 equation are analysed. This allows for a formulation of conditions on the perturbation terms that preserve its integrability. The perturbation corrections to the scattering data and to the corresponding action-angle (canonical) variables are studied. The analysis shows ...

On The Existence Of Solitary Traveling Waves For Generalized Hertzian Chains, 2010 UMASS, Amherst

#### On The Existence Of Solitary Traveling Waves For Generalized Hertzian Chains, Panos Kevrekidis, Atanas Stefanov

We consider the question of existence of “bell-shaped” (i.e. non-increasing for x > 0 and non-decreasing for x < 0) traveling waves for the strain variable of the generalized Hertzian model describing, in the special case of a p = 3/2 exponent, the dynamics of a granular chain. The proof of existence of such waves is based on the English and Pego [Proceedings of the AMS 133, 1763 (2005)] formulation of the problem. More specifically, we construct an appropriate energy functional, for which we show that the constrained minimization problem over bell-shaped entries has a solution. We also provide an alternative ...

Discrete Breathers At The Interface Between A Diatomic And A Monoatomic Granular Chain, 2010 UMASS, Amherst

#### Discrete Breathers At The Interface Between A Diatomic And A Monoatomic Granular Chain, C. Hoogeboom, G. Theocharis, Panos Kevrekidis

*Panos Kevrekidis*

In the present work, we develop a systematic examination of the existence, stability, and dynamical properties of a discrete breather at the interface between a diatomic and a monoatomic granular chain. We remarkably find that such an “interface breather” is more robust than its bulk diatomic counterpart throughout the gap of the linear spectrum. The latter linear spectral gap needs to exist for the breather state to arise and the relevant spectral conditions are discussed. We illustrate the minimal excitation conditions under which such an interface breather can be “nucleated” and analyze its apparently weak interaction with regular highly nonlinear ...

Compactons In Nonlinear Schrödinger Lattices With Strong Nonlinearity Management, 2010 UMass, Amherst

#### Compactons In Nonlinear Schrödinger Lattices With Strong Nonlinearity Management, F. Kh. Abdullaev, Panos Kevrekidis, M. Salerno

*Panos Kevrekidis*

The existence of compactons in the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in the presence of fast periodic time modulations of the nonlinearity is demonstrated. In the averaged DNLS equation the resulting effective inter-well tunneling depends on modulation parameters {\it and} on the field amplitude. This introduces nonlinear dispersion in the system and can lead to a prototypical realization of single- or multi-site stable discrete compactons in nonlinear optical waveguide and BEC arrays. These structures can dynamically arise out of Gaussian or compactly supported initial data.

*Articles*

We develop the Inverse Scattering Transform (IST) method for the Degasperis- Procesi equation. The spectral problem is an sl(3) Zakharov-Shabat problem with constant boundary conditions and finite reduction group. The basic aspects of the IST such as the construction of fundamental analytic solutions, the formulation of a Riemann-Hilbert problem, and the implementation of the dressing method are presented.

Disturbance in a forest’s canopy, whether caused by treefall, limbfall, landslide, or fire determines not only the distribution of well-lit patches at any given time, but also the ways in which the forest changes over time. In this dissertation, I use a 25 year record of treefall gap formation find a novel and highly patterned process of forest disturbance and regeneration, providing a local mechanism by examining the factors that influence the likelihood of treefall. I then develop a stochastic cellular automaton for disturbance and regeneration based on the analysis of this long term data set and illustrate the ...

This paper uses KAM torus theory and Simplified General Perturbations 4 (SGP4) orbit prediction techniques compiled by Dr. William Wiesel and compares it to Analytical Graphics ® Incorporated (AGI) Satellite Toolkit ® (STK) orbit data. The goal of this paper is to verify KAM torus theory can be used to describe and propagate an Earth satellite orbit with similar accuracy to existing general perturbation techniques. Using SGP4 code including only truncated geopotential effects, KAM torus generating code, and other utilities were used to describe a particular satellite orbit as a torus and then propagate the satellite using traditional and KAM torus techniques ...

#### Validation Of A Novel Approach To Solving Multibody Systems Using Hamilton's Weak Principle, Ashton D. Hainge

*Theses and Dissertations*

A novel approach for formulating and solving for the dynamic response of multibody systems has been developed using Hamilton’s Law of Varying Action as its unifying principle. In order to assure that the associated computer program is sufficiently robust when applied across a wide range of dynamic systems, the program must be verified and validated. The purpose of the research was to perform the verification and validation of the program. Results from the program were compared with closed-form and numerical solutions of simple systems, such as a simple pendulum and a rotating pendulum. The accuracy of the program for ...

Interaction Of Excited States In Two-Species Bose-Einstein Condensates: A Case Study, 2010 University of Massachusetts - Amherst

#### Interaction Of Excited States In Two-Species Bose-Einstein Condensates: A Case Study, T Kapitula, Kjh Law, Pg Kevrekidis

*Panos Kevrekidis*

In this paper we consider the existence and spectral stability of excited states in two-species Bose–Einstein condensates in the case of a pancake magnetic trap. Each new excited state found in this paper is to leading order a linear combination of two one-species dipoles, each of which is a spectrally stable excited state for one-species condensates. The analysis is done via a Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction and is valid in the limit of weak nonlinear interactions. Some conclusions, however, can be made at this limit which remain true even when the interactions are large.
