Cincinnati: From Porkopolis To No. One City, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"It was 152 years after the settlement at Providence n 1636 that this Midwestern present-day metropolis was established. Its location on what was to become the country's most industrialized river, the Ohio, provided its accessibility, starting with the first visit by a steamboat in 1811. In 1819, one of the largest city universities in the nation today, with 35,000 students, was founded And by 1850, with its location next to the rich farming areas of the country, it ranked as fifth largest city in te country and had earned the title of Porkopolis because of its status as ...

Atlases For Select Portland Metropolitan Watersheds, Elizabeth Dimmick, Scott Kaden, Elizabeth Mros, Doug Strickler, Alex Welsch

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The primary purpose of this project is to promote planning on a watershed basis in the Portland Metropolitan area. We intend to support Metro's Regional Planning Framework process by encouraging a stewardship ethic based on watershed considerations. Atlases characterizing several of Portland's watersheds will provide specific information to three audiences: planners, community activists, and decision makers. The atlases will provide an information base upon which watershed management processes can be built.

Neighborhood Livability In Northwest Portland: A Case Study Of Portland's Northwest District Executive Summary, Martha J. Bianco, Judy S. Davis, Vicky Lovell

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

Portland's Northwest Neighborhood District ("the District") has a unique character, reflecting its special role in Portland's economic history and its geographical location relative to the downtown area, the Willamette River and the West Hills. Current tensions between the District's function as a close-in, high density residential area and its commercial activities are the most recent iteration of tensions that have existed from the time the area was first settled.

This is an executive summary of the report which examines the impacts of retail and residential land use in the District and how this mixture of residential/retail ...

Erasing Misconceptions About Immigration, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Much has been written about our immigration policy because of the large numbers of Mexicans, Cubans and Haitians that have come, or attempted to come, to this country. Stemming the flow of immigrants is also one of the reasons for the actions of this country in Haiti."

Individual Participation And Community Arts Groups: A Quantitative Analysis Of Philadelphia, Mark J. Stern, Susan C. Seifert

Individual Participation and Community Arts Groups: A Quantitative Analysis of Philadelphia

This paper presents SIAP's first attempt to develop methods to measure the non-economic impact of the arts. The best data available on individual participation--periodic surveys of public participation in the arts by the National Endowment for the Arts--provided a wealth of data on individual behavior and attitude, but the few attempts to link these data to larger social contexts focused on the economics of arts consumption. This paper uses the public participation data for one city--Philadelphia. Information on the arts and cultural behavior of a sample of 600 adults in 1992 was linked with databases on cultural groups in ...

Training Leaders For Multiracial And Multi-Ethnic Collaboration, James Jennings Sep 1994

Training Leaders For Multiracial And Multi-Ethnic Collaboration, James Jennings

Trotter Review

Due to changes unfolding in urban demographics, along with continuing social and economic problems in many cities, there is a growing need for a cadre of community-based leaders to work in, and on behalf of, communities of color. Developing such leaders requires understanding of the factors that determine the nature of racial and ethnic relations between African-American, Latino, and Asian communities. Unfortunately, training programs in higher education designed to equip African-American, Latino, and Asian urban leaders to work with each other and become effective change agents in their communities have not been widely established, even at institutions with strong urban ...

The Portland Of The Pacific Beguiles, Chester Smolski Sep 1994

The Portland Of The Pacific Beguiles, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"When Amos Lovejoy of Boston and Francis Pettygrove of Portland sought to name the clearing in the Oregon forest called 'Stumptown' (because of the tree stumps remaining from frequent fires set by the Indians), each wanted to honor the New England city from which he came. By the toss of a coin, Pettygrove was the winner, and the Portland of the Northeast had its counterpart in the Portland of the Northwest."

We All Benefit From A Clean Providence, Chester Smolski Jul 1994

We All Benefit From A Clean Providence, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Walking along the newly relocated Woonasquatucket River and observing the new walks, roadways and bridges, one cannot help but be impressed by this continuing evidence of the revitalization of the capital city's downtown. Equally impressive is the general overall cleanliness of this area and the rest of the city center. It was not always so."
