An Evaluation Of Competitive Industrial Structure And Regional Manufacturing Employment Change., Joshua Drucker Aug 2015

An Evaluation Of Competitive Industrial Structure And Regional Manufacturing Employment Change., Joshua Drucker

Joshua Drucker

This paper examines the relationships between several aspects of regional industrial structure and employment change in the United States manufacturing sector and 19 subsectors from 1987 to 1997. Economic diversity, industrial specialization, and competitive structure are considered together in a non-causal regression framework in order to assess their relative associations with economic performance. The innovative features of the research are considering together multiple distinct facets of industrial structure at the regional scale, emphasizing the less commonly studied characteristic of industrial competitive structure, and exploiting confidential microdata to construct and evaluate detailed metrics across broad geographic and industrial ranges. The findings ...

The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station Study: A Socio-Economic Analysis And Closure Transition Guide Book, Jonathan Cooper

Jonathan G. Cooper

This Guide Book estimates the socioeconomic impacts of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (“Pilgrim Station”) on the Town of Plymouth, the Old Colony Planning Council (OCPC), and neighboring cities and towns. It does not endorse any perspective for or against nuclear power, focusing only on the impacts of Pilgrim Station’s operations and the impacts of decommissioning should it occur. The plant’s direct impacts are identified first, followed by estimates of secondary impacts that come from the business and household spending caused by Pilgrim Station’s expenditures. The Guide Book then estimates the impacts Pilgrim Station’s closure would ...

Theorising The ‘Fifth Migration’ In The United States: Understanding Lifestyle Migration From An Integrated Approach, Brian Hoey Jun 2014

Theorising The ‘Fifth Migration’ In The United States: Understanding Lifestyle Migration From An Integrated Approach, Brian Hoey

Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.

This chapter is an empirically-informed discussion of relevant social theory for examining the phenomenon of lifestyle migration in the United States in both rural and urban settings. Specifically, the chapter explores key explanatory models born of research into so-called non-economic migration occurring since the early twentieth century—models that may be characterized as primarily either production or consumption oriented in their emphasis—as a context for outlining an integrated approach. The author then highlights changes in how some Americans appear to calculate personal and collective quality of life as engendered by an emerging economic order—based on principles of flexibility ...

University Community Partnerships, Jonathan G. Cooper, Zeenat Kotval-K, Zenia Kotval, John R. Mullin

Jonathan G. Cooper

University-Community Partnerships have been recognized as a valuable contribution to both the academic community and our cities and towns. In the words of Henry Cisneros, former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Design secretary, “The long-term futures of both the city and the university in this country are so intertwined that one cannot—or perhaps will not—survive without the other.” Increasingly, colleges and universities are bringing their time, energy and resources to bear on local problems. They are using their other physical, financial and intellectual capital to facilitate economic development, provide social services, technical assistance and create opportunities ...

Rethinking Atlanta's Regional Resilience In An Age Of Uncertainty: Still The Economic Engine Of The New South?, Jennifer Clark

Jennifer Clark

One of the great challenges facing large, diverse metropolitan economies is how to build and maintain sustainable and resilient cities. For several years now, people have recognized the critical and expanding role of “global cities.” Although Saskia Sassen’s initial conceptualization focused on leading financial centers---London, New York, and Tokyo---the notion has developed to encompass broader ideas about how diverse metropolitan economies serve as regional nodes in a global network (Sassen 2001) . These global cities serve as the engines behind national and regional economic growth. Increasingly, academics and policy advocates have argued that global cities constitute the most important interconnected ...

This study describes the impact of GRC on the State of Ohio and on Northeast Ohio, where GRC is located. Northeast Ohio includes the eight counties in the Akron and Cleveland metropolitan areas.1 This report is an expansion and update of an earlier study, published in February 1996.2 As before, this study employs two methods to determine GRC’s influence on the state and local economies. The first method uses quantitative models to estimate the effect of GRC on the studied economies.
