Occupy Wall Street's Challenge To An American Public Transcript, Christopher Neville Leary Oct 2014

Occupy Wall Street's Challenge To An American Public Transcript, Christopher Neville Leary

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the rhetoric and discourses of the anti-corporate movement Occupy Wall Street, using frameworks from political ethnography and critical discourse analysis to offer a thick, triangulated description of a single event, Occupy Wall Street's occupation of Zuccotti Park. The study shows how Occupy achieved a disturbing positionality relative to the forces which routinely dominate public discourse and proposes that Occupy's encampment was politically intolerable to the status quo because the movement held the potential to consolidate critical thought and action. Because the "soft" means of re-capturing public consent were weak in 2011 because of the 2008 ...

Hidden Agenda? Cultural Policy In Hong Kong’S Urban Redevelopment, Tobias Zuser Sep 2014

Hidden Agenda? Cultural Policy In Hong Kong’S Urban Redevelopment, Tobias Zuser

Theses & Dissertations

For many years industrial buildings in Hong Kong have formed some of the city’s most vibrant cultural clusters by providing local artists with low-cost space to pursue their creative work. However, recent efforts by the government also targeted these areas for commercial revitalization. By 2020 the industrial part of Kwun Tong, a densely populated district in Kowloon East, will not only have been transformed into the city’s second Central Business District, but also seen the majority of the current cultural workers leaving due to the rapid valorisation of land. Nevertheless, these ongoing struggles over spatial power have also ...

An Interpretive Plan Guide For Wilderness Park In Lincoln, Nebraska, Rachel J. Ward Aug 2014

An Interpretive Plan Guide For Wilderness Park In Lincoln, Nebraska, Rachel J. Ward

Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects

Wilderness Park, located in Lancaster County, Nebraska, is a public park of unique ecological and historical value to the city of Lincoln and to the surrounding region. The natural and historical features of the park present an opportunity to communicate environmental and historical topics that are relevant on local, national, and global levels, as well as inspire a lively sense of pride in the community. The problem is that many topics relevant to Wilderness Park are not currently being interpreted at the park, and that there are relatively few interpretive resources available to park visitors.

The purpose of this project ...

Carving A Walled Village To Imprison Friends : Mechanical Solidarity In The Cyberspace Of Ingress, Leung-Sea, Lucia Siu

Staff Publications

This paper is an ethnographic account of the mobile gaming community of Ingress, a global game developed by Google that runs on mobile phones. Gamers from two factions have to travel, cooperate and combat across actual geographical space to play. The paper investigates: (1) New hybrid forms of physical-cyber interactions, such as urban flash mobs who unanimously stare at mobile phone screens, paramilitary hierarchy mobilized by communication channels, and loyalty by screen-name identities. (2) The strategy and behaviour of a group of gamers from the satellite town of Tuen Mun, Hong Kong. The group has a subculture that glorifies self-sacrifice ...

Reacciones Culturales A La Sociedad Del Consumismo En España Contemporánea: Correlaciones Entre La Economía Y Los Repertorios Culturales, Taylor M. Perry Apr 2014

Reacciones Culturales A La Sociedad Del Consumismo En España Contemporánea: Correlaciones Entre La Economía Y Los Repertorios Culturales, Taylor M. Perry

Senior Theses and Projects

The phenomenon of postmodern society includes increased importance on consumerist culture and capitalist behavior. During the end of the twentieth century, economic prosperity reinforced this notion throughout Spain’s large cities. Following the demise of the Spanish financial and banking industries in 2010, society began to voice negative opinions surrounding consumer culture and the dependence on spending money to spur economic growth. High unemployment and increased debt levels yielded protesting art performances, politically charged editorials and various studies regarding a newly discovered “shopping addiction” disease. This social and political outrage conveyed through an assortment of cultural expressions surrounding an economic ...

Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang Mar 2014

Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang

Graphic Communication

This research explored the creative element of subway map creation in light of its effectiveness. Printed subway maps, used often for metropolitan cities and areas, are limited in physical dimension and scale, carrying minimal information. The New York, San Francisco Bay Area, Tokyo, Paris, London and Moscow subway maps highlight similar design and abstraction that fulfill the basic necessary elements for subway patrons. Over the years since the first metro map for each city was created, maps have become more simplified by removing physical land features and reference points to make way for expanding and new subway lines, stations, and ...

香港行人專用區政策研究, 以西洋菜街為例, Tianpei Wei Jan 2014

香港行人專用區政策研究, 以西洋菜街為例, Tianpei Wei

Cultural Studies@Lingnan
