Lents Gateway, A. G. Flynn, Carol Herzberg, Lisa Nasshahn, Brett Sheehan Dec 1996

Lents Gateway, A. G. Flynn, Carol Herzberg, Lisa Nasshahn, Brett Sheehan

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The Lents Neighborhood of Portland, Oregon aspires to reclaim its identity and renew its economic vitality. Construction of the 1-205 freeway in the mid-1970's physically divided it and disrupted its sense of community. Prompted by the wishes of the community and other concerned parties for greater visibility and a stronger economic center for Lents, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has asked Lumpetek to study this site and develop recommendations for its best use. We will research physical, environmental and demographic aspects of the parcel and surrounding area, as well as designs which have been implemented on sites' with ...

Shelter Poverty: Housing Affordability Among Asian Americans, Michael E. Stone Oct 1996

Shelter Poverty: Housing Affordability Among Asian Americans, Michael E. Stone

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

Relatively little research has been conducted that focuses on the housing situation of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (hereafter generally referred to as Asian Americans), especially on the national level. From a review of about 30 articles and reports over the past decade that examine racial/ethnic housing situations nationally, only one specifically addressed housing problems of Asian Americans (Hansen, 1986) while two others included Asian Americans along with other populations of color. Of the remaining articles, most used the terms race, racial discrimination, or segregation in their titles, yet did not include Asian Americans in the studies. Of particular ...

Small Business Lending: Barriers And Trends, Zhongcai Zhang, Ziona Austrian Oct 1996

Small Business Lending: Barriers And Trends, Zhongcai Zhang, Ziona Austrian

Urban Publications

In recent years, small-business lending has been discussed widely among the commercial banking community, a reflection of both the growing relative importance of small businesses to the U.S. economy and the fact that large companies have developed the ability to access capital markets directly for debt and equity financing. Although their market share in small-business lending has been eroded in recent years by competition from depository and non-depository financial institutions, commercial banks remain the most frequently used source of financing for small businesses. Accordingly, this paper will focus on commercial banks. At some point during their operating history, most ...

Social Constructions Of Nature In Urban Singapore, Lily Kong, Brenda S. A. Yeoh

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Wilderness was increasingly evaluated either as a resource to be exploited or a resource to be protected. Those who urged the protection of wilderness viewed it as a place for outdoor recreation and safe enough for the family; others saw it as a museum of natural curiosities, a tourist attraction; while the high minded revered it as nature's cathedral. [Yi-Fu Tuan 1971: 38]

Identifying Differences Is A Problem, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Her mother is black and Native American; her father is Mexican and Italian; so with what racial and ethnic group does she identify? On her college entrance application she wrote "African-American." This topnotch student, with demonstrated ability in scholarship, athletics, music, leadership and community involvement, is exactly the type of student Harvard wants, sos he has been invited to be in its entering class this fall. No small feat since nine of 10 applicants are rejected.

Ethnicity and race are two of the 10 criteria used at Harvard in making selections for admission, for diversity is the key word today ...

Impact Of The Urban Growth Boundary On Metropolitan Housing Markets, Gerard C. Mildner, Kenneth Dueker, Anthony M. Rufolo

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

As required by state law, Metro has conducted an "Urban Growth Report" and a "Housing Needs Analysis" to determine whether the currant Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) surrounding the Portland metropolitan area is sufficient to handle the increase in population and number of households expected over the next 20 years. Mr. Don Morissette commissioned Portland State University's Center for Urban Studies to assess whether the techniques used in theses two studies were appropriate and to assess the impact of the UGB on housing markets in the Portland metropolitan area generally. James Rouse--A Man For All Seasons, Chester Smolski Apr 1996

James Rouse--A Man For All Seasons, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services, said it best: he 'did more to revitalize American cities than anyone this century.' Recognition of this fact came last September when President Clinton awarded him our nation's highest civilian honor--the Presidential Medal of Freedom. James W. Rouse, died at the age of 81, just 17 short days before his 82nd birthday on April 26--a long life with long-lasting achievements by a humanist and an urbanist, a man often referred to as a 'real Christian' and an 'urban visionary.' Where does one begin?"
