The Public Career Of Maurice Hudson Thatcher, Randy Ream Dec 1981

The Public Career Of Maurice Hudson Thatcher, Randy Ream

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The public career of Maurice Hudson Thatcher was wedded to one of the most interesting epochs in Kentucky history and Kentucky politics. From 1895, with his election as county clerk of Butler County, to his defeat for the United States Senate in 1932, Maurice Thatcher was intimately involved in almost every statewide political campaign. He participated in the rise of the Republican party to a point where it was a definite force in state politics and won almost as many statewide races as it lost. He also participated in the party’s relegation to minority status with the advent of ...

Thomas Jefferson And The West, Denise Baker May 1981

Thomas Jefferson And The West, Denise Baker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

From his childhood on the fringe of the Virginia frontier until his years of retirement at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson displayed a special interest in the vast expanse of land stretching westward. The land provided the ideal place for the expansion of Jefferson’s dream of an American empire for liberty. He viewed the continent as the home of an agrarian nation living under the principles of democracy.

Chapter one is introductory in nature, linking Jefferson’s ideals to his interest in the West. Chapter two concentrates on his early contributions to the West. Emphasis is placed on land speculation, the ...

Campaign Spending And Electoral Outcomes: 1977 Kentucky House And 1978 U.S. House And Senate Elections, Philip Henry Jos Jul 1980

Campaign Spending And Electoral Outcomes: 1977 Kentucky House And 1978 U.S. House And Senate Elections, Philip Henry Jos

Government Thesis

This research examined the relationship between campaign spending and electoral success in 1977 Kentucky House races and 1978 U.S. House and Senate races. The results indicated that the winning candidate’s percentage of campaign expenditure has a significant effect on the candidate’s vote percentage. This effect is greater in U.S. House races than in U.S. Senate races. In Kentucky House races, the effect of spending on electoral success was only significant in open seat races. Regression results confirmed the importance of challenger spending in congressional races and indicated that the effect of challenger expenditures on votes ...

The Masterless Society: Observations On American Democracy By Alexis De Tocqueville, James Tyrie Jr. Dec 1977

The Masterless Society: Observations On American Democracy By Alexis De Tocqueville, James Tyrie Jr.

Government theses

French political theorist Alexis de Tocqueville’s views concerning American democracy were examined in order to discern key aspects of democratic thought and practice in America. Tocqueville found certain fundamental premises such as individual freedom and “equality of conditions” at the base of democracy in America. From these basic premises come several paradoxical results, namely the masterless society, economic materialism and “tyranny of the majority.” These paradoxes are controlled by safeguards of associations, the press and the judiciary within the system. It was found that Tocqueville’s detachment and foresight give his thought greater meaning than that of many contemporary ...
