Rising Scholar: Flint Water Crisis: Impacts On Human-Environmental Interactions And Reflections For Future Solutions, Julia Shen

International Social Science Review

Policy Point—Counterpoint: Do African American Athletes Have An Obligation To Fight Against Racial Injustice?, Eric A. Hall, Robert Bj Marach, J. Marcos Reynolds

International Social Science Review

This policy point-counterpoint, authored by history Ph.D. candidates BJ Marach and J. Marcos Reynolds, frames black-athletic activism as a longstanding historical debate reaching back to the late 1800s. Both argue for the efficacy of such activism and ground their analysis in the “Revolt of the Black Athlete” of the late 1960s. From here they diverge. Marach contends that black athletes are under no obligation to protest racial injustice, while Reynolds concludes that their platform and position within the black community requires that they act.

College Education And Women’S Ultimate Goals Of Gaining Respect And Nondependence, Violette Ho Dec 2017

College Education And Women’S Ultimate Goals Of Gaining Respect And Nondependence, Violette Ho

International Social Science Review

Vietnam's 1980s open-door policy (Đổi-mới) has created opportunities for women to work outside the home. The educational reform launched after Đổi-mới, which aimed to provide a workforce for Vietnam's growing market economy, has brought a surge in college attendance among women since the 1990s. The surge has occurred even though the traditional system of patrilocal marriage and residence remains the normative expectation, and helping daughters attend college often means sacrificing most of a family's meager resources. Drawing on open-ended interviews with 12 female, low-income college students from suburban and rural areas in Southern Vietnam, this paper explores ...

Optimising Rigor In Focus Group Analysis: Using Content/Thematic And Form/Structural Approaches To Understand British Somali’S Experiences Of Policing In London, Anya Ahmed, Muzammil Quraishi, Asha Abdillahi

International Social Science Review

There is evidence that focus groups are useful to explore issues with socially marginalized groups, notably when participants have shared particular experiences. Focus groups have the methodological potential to highlight group norms and processes, and to illuminate the social and cultural contexts in which individual agency takes place. However, an often cited concern about focus groups is researchers’ inadequate description of the analytical process which then affects the usefulness and credibility of the findings and rigor in analysis. In this article we address this concern and offer an analytical framework which takes account of the content (themes) and form (structure ...
