We Wear The Mask: Exploring The Talented Tenth And African American Political Philosophy In 21st Century Politics, Lauryn T. Minter

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have suggested that Blacks who express linked racial fate are ideologically liberal. Given the prominence of Black philosophical thought and salience of race, I suggest that linked racial fate results in conservative ideology, which exists on a separate ideological dimension than the traditional conservative ideological dimension. This new ideological dimension, referred to as conservatism among Blacks, is vital to understanding Black political thought in the 21st century. Using data from the 1996 National Black Election Study, 2008 National Annenberg Election Study, and focus group data I argue that the conservative ideas espoused by Blacks, specifically members of the ...

Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent May 2014

Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent

Doctoral Dissertations

What do community interpreting for the Deaf in western societies, conference interpreting for the European Parliament, and language brokering in international management have in common? Academic research and professional training have historically emphasized the linguistic and cognitive challenges of interpreting, neglecting or ignoring the social aspects that structure communication. All forms of interpreting are inherently social; they involve relationships among at least three people and two languages. The contexts explored here, American Sign Language/English interpreting and spoken language interpreting within the European Parliament, show that simultaneous interpreting involves attitudes, norms and values about intercultural communication that overemphasize information and ...

Social Ideology And Taxes In A Differentiated Candidates Framework, Stefan Krasa, Mattias K. Polborn Jan 2014

Social Ideology And Taxes In A Differentiated Candidates Framework, Stefan Krasa, Mattias K. Polborn

Mattias K Polborn

Many observers have diagnosed an increasing ideological polarization, particularly on non-economic matters, in the United States. How does this influence the political competition between candidates on economic issues? We analyze this question using a differentiated candidates framework in which two office-motivated candidates differ in their fixed ideological position and choose a level of government spending and implied taxes to maximize their vote share. In equilibrium, candidates choose their tax rates to cater to a mix of swing voters who contain socially-conservative and economically liberal voters, as well as socially-liberal and economically-conservative voters. We analyze how economic positions are influenced by ...

Policy Divergence And Voter Polarization In A Structural Model Of Elections, Stefan Krasa, Mattias K. Polborn Jan 2014

Policy Divergence And Voter Polarization In A Structural Model Of Elections, Stefan Krasa, Mattias K. Polborn

Mattias K Polborn

One of the most widely discussed phenomena in American politics today is the perceived increasing partisan divide that splits the U.S. electorate. A contested question is whether this diagnosis is actually true, and if so, what is the underlying cause. We propose a new method that simultaneously estimates voter preferences and the parties' positions on economic and ``cultural'' issues. We apply the model to U.S. presidential elections between 1972 and 2008. The model recovers candidates' positions from voter behavior; decomposes changes in the overall political polarization of the electorate into changes in the distribution of voter ideal positions ...

Between Nihilism And Transcendence : Albert Camus' Dialogue With Nietzsche And Dostoevsky, Sean Derek Illing Jan 2014

Between Nihilism And Transcendence : Albert Camus' Dialogue With Nietzsche And Dostoevsky, Sean Derek Illing

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the impact of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Friedrich Nietzsche on the development of Albert Camus’ political philosophy. The innovation of the present study is in the attempt to offer a substantive examination of Camus’ dialogue with Nietzsche and Dostoevsky. To the extent that connections between these writers have been discussed, it has been in the general context of modern thought or it has focused on overlapping literary themes. This project emphasizes the political dimensions of these connections. In addition to re-interpreting Camus’ political thought, the aim is to clarify Camus’ struggle with transcendence and to bring renewed attention ...

The Modern Gender Gap In Partisanship And Ideology: A Cross-National Analysis, Tiffany Quick Jan 2014

The Modern Gender Gap In Partisanship And Ideology: A Cross-National Analysis, Tiffany Quick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis updates and expands upon the developmental theory of the gender gap in party and ideological identification originally posited by Norris and Inglehart (2000) to explain why women in advanced industrial nations are more likely to hold more leftist ideological identification than men. A comparative cross-national analysis using data from the World Values Survey (2004-2008) extends Norris and Inglehart's study, with an examination of the gender gap in advanced industrial, post-communist and developing nations. To further explore the nature of the gender gap in the United States, data from the American National Election Study (Cumulative File and 2012 ...

Litigation Reform: An Institutional Approach, Stephen B. Burbank, Sean Farhang Jan 2014

Litigation Reform: An Institutional Approach, Stephen B. Burbank, Sean Farhang

Faculty Scholarship at Penn Law

The program of regulation through private litigation that Democratic Congresses purposefully created starting in the late 1960s soon met opposition emanating primarily from the Republican party. In the long campaign for retrenchment that began in the Reagan administration, consequential reform proved difficult and ultimately failed in Congress. Litigation reformers turned to the courts and, in marked contrast to their legislative failure, were well-rewarded, achieving growing rates of voting support from an increasingly conservative Supreme Court on issues curtailing private enforcement under individual statutes. We also demonstrate that the judiciary’s control of procedure has been central to the campaign to ...
