Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management Publications

Using the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) criteria, this study compares perceptions of Malaysian hotel quality managers (HQMs) and employees on leadership and workforce practices. A mixed methods approach was used. Questionnaires were distributed to 35 HQMs and 576 employees of three-, four-, and five-star hotels. Interviews were conducted with HQMs. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. All interviews were transcribed, hand coded, and analyzed for themes. Compared to hotel employees, HQMs had higher scores for all leadership and workforce items. Comparing managers’ perceptions revealed a statistically significant difference between three- and ...

Borrowed Identity: The Tea Party And The Ethos Of Web Dubois' "Preacher", Pamela Jean Holt Jan 2013

Borrowed Identity: The Tea Party And The Ethos Of Web Dubois' "Preacher", Pamela Jean Holt

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Drawing on WEB Du Bois' notion of the "Preacher," as defined in The Souls of Black Folk, this thesis explores the intersection of this traditionally black community figure with the leadership of the Tea Party. Du Bois's "Preacher," a figure characterized by a multiplicity of powerful leadership roles within the black church community, has been largely absent from rhetorical scholarship. I argue that the ethos of the "Preacher" has lately been appropriated by white, middle class political leaders, including Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and Michele Bachmann in an effort to form spiritual, charismatic relationships with their audiences. Through close ...

The Role Of Photography In Framing And Creating Personal Narrative: An Analysis Of The 2012 Presidential Candidates, Britta Lynn Mennecke

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether images located on

Governor Mitt Romney's website and President Barack Obama's website could provided a strong enough narrative to sway voters. The goal of this investigation is not to suggest the causation, but to look for patterns that emerge in the collection of data over the month of October 2012, up to the election. Screenshots are collected on a daily basis, in the morning and at night to check for changes that may occur throughout the day. During the process of categorizing the images, patterns began to emerge suggesting ...

Kant's Natural Law, Brian David Janssen Jan 2013

Kant's Natural Law, Brian David Janssen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Kant's philosophy can be interpreted being either minimalist or welfarist. Kant's political philosophy can be connected to his moral philosophy in a way that highlights natural law themes in his writing. This provides evidence for the minimalist interpretation.

Learning And Power In International Farmer Exchanges, Stephen August Lauer Jan 2013

Learning And Power In International Farmer Exchanges, Stephen August Lauer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The "Bridging the Gap" program provides an opportunity to explore the relationships between learning and power in international agricultural development partnerships. A USAID-funded partnership between Iowa State University and Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns, this farmer-to-farmer program sent groups of Iowan women farmers to Uganda to teach Ugandan women farmers with the objectives that Ugandans would move from subsistence to commercial farming and that both groups would benefit from the cultural exchange. Data were collected primarily through semi-structured qualitative interviews of 28 Ugandan farmers, 7 Iowan farmers, and several program staff, and were analyzed using a grounded-theory approach. This thesis ...

Elections And The Third-Person Effect: Voters' Perception Of The 2012 First Presidential Debate's Effects, Ge Wang Jan 2013

Elections And The Third-Person Effect: Voters' Perception Of The 2012 First Presidential Debate's Effects, Ge Wang

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The first presidential debate in 2012 was unique, in that it significantly changed the original balance and the commonly predicted election outcome. This survey study is theoretically based on the third-person effect approach, aiming to investigate the perceived self-other discrepancy with regards to how the presidential debate influenced voters' knowledge, attitudes and choices. Results showed that there was a stronger third-person effect on the recipients of negative content than those of positive content, but people with stronger party identification would not change their candidate preference by only watching the first presidential debate. This study brings a unique contribution to the ...

Democracy & Despair: Riots, Economic Development, And An Emergency Manager In Benton Harbor, Mi, Tyler C. Reedy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Michigan's emergency manager law raises many questions about the nature of American democracy. The law specifically targets financially troubled municipal governments for state take over. The demographics of the cities where an emergency manager has been installed have been overwhelmingly poor and overwhelmingly African American. Using a qualitative approach to analyze scholarly books and articles, local media accounts, legal rulings, and personal interviews, this thesis seeks to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of what democracy looks like in the United States by focusing on one particular city that has been subjected to the emergency manager law. By analyzing ...

Healthcare Reform In Mainland China: The Relationship Of Healthcare Reform And Economic Development In Chinese Rural And Urban Areas, Yen-Han Lee

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A healthcare system is a major part of any social system that plays a vital role in both developed and developing countries. It is the system that supports our health, environment, life expectancy, and hygiene. A successful healthcare system can bring positive impact to society. For the last few decades, most developed countries have had an organized healthcare system to provide sufficient medical resources to patients. This helps to increase life expectancy and improve hygiene. On the other hand, a better healthcare system also brings negative consequences for the society because an aging population becomes a topic of controversy around ...

Transfer Of Learning In Mathematics, Science, And Reading Among Students In Turkey: A Study Using 2009 Pisa Data, Mack C. Shelley, Atila Yildirim

Political Science Publications

Using Program for International Student Achievement (PISA) 2009 data we study the transfer of knowledge among reading, mathematics, and science among Turkish students. Both Science and Reading are significant predictors of Mathematics scores, although clearly Science is a much stronger predictor; the transfer from Science to Mathematics is much greater than is the transfer from Reading to Mathematics. SCHOOLID is the single strongest predictor of Mathematics outcomes, likely reflecting the importance of socioeconomic and regional or urban/rural differences in the quality of education available to students. Both Mathematics and Reading are significant predictors of Science scores, although Mathematics is ...

The Effect Of Fdi On Employment In China, Ying Wei

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the launching of its Reform and Opening Policy, China has begun to integrate more fully into the global economy through trade and investments. Along with deepening of the Reform and Opening Policy and the trend toward ever-increasing economic globalization, the scale of attracting foreign investment into China has also grown. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has played a crucial role in promoting China's economic growth, and employment is an important aspect of economic development. To gain a better understanding of the relationship between FDI and employment in China, this thesis examines longitudinal macroeconomic data to assess the effect of ...
