Does Size Matter? Student Outcomes, School Size, The State Of Mississippi And Its Delta Region: Implications For Socioeconomic Well-Being, Leslie Taylor-Grover

All Dissertations

The positive link between educational attainment and improved socioeconomic outcomes under the auspices of the current economic environment is essential to the survival of rural states like Mississippi, which has some of the nation's lowest educational attainment and income levels. One of the most promising education policies for Mississippi is related to research on school size, district size, and positive educational outcomes among students. Smaller schools and districts are increasingly being touted as the basis for rural school reform, renewed economic development efforts in rural communities, and cost effective means to overcoming barriers poor students face in graduating high ...

Religion And Party Realignment: Are Catholics Realigning Into The Republican Party?, Patrick Lee Burns Dec 2006

Religion And Party Realignment: Are Catholics Realigning Into The Republican Party?, Patrick Lee Burns

Political Science Theses

This thesis examines the influence of religion on party realignment in the United States focusing on Catholic voting behavior. A statistical analysis utilizing bivariate analysis and logistical regressions examines if religion and party realignment is an ecumenical trend expanding beyond Evangelicals to Catholics. It measures scientifically the party trends of the Catholic voter. With data pooled from the National Election Studies from 1960 to 2004, it tests the hypothesis that church attending Catholics are realigning over time into the Republican Party both in vote choice and party identification, because of their pro-life position on abortion. The analysis shows that church ...

Understanding Access To Essential Pharmaceuticals During A Public Health Crisis, Andrew Jessen Dec 2006

Understanding Access To Essential Pharmaceuticals During A Public Health Crisis, Andrew Jessen

Political Science Theses

Despite the benefits of antiretroviral therapy in treating HIV/AIDS, government responses have varied substantially, from provisions guaranteeing nearly universal access to insufficient provisions providing almost no access. This research seeks to specifically examine primary explanations, such as economic capacity, and emerging explanations, such as the role of electoral accountability and the presence of stigma, and the coordination between the epistemic community and political leadership as potential causes for the variance in the government provision. By controlling for state economic capacity, this research furthers the importance of examining other explanations for state response in light of a public health crisis ...

Civic Responsibility And Patterns Of Voluntary Participation Around The World, Mary Alice Haddad Dec 2006

Civic Responsibility And Patterns Of Voluntary Participation Around The World, Mary Alice Haddad

Division II Faculty Publications

This article seeks to explain why different types of volunteer organizations are prevalent in different countries. It hypothesizes that patterns of volunteer participation are a function of citizen attitudes toward governmental and individual responsibility for caring for society. Those countries (e.g., Japan)—where citizens think that governments should be responsible for dealing with social problems—will tend to have higher participation in embedded volunteer organizations, such as parent-teacher associations. Those countries (e.g., the United States)—where citizens think that individuals should take responsibility for dealing with social problems—will tend to have more participation in nonembedded, organizations, such ...

International Trade In The San Bernardino Region: Transportation, Trends, And Employment, Mirya R. Holman, Travis Coan

Mirya R Holman

International trade presents significant employment, growth, and revenue opportunities for the San Bernardino region, which encompasses San Bernardino County and several cities in Riverside County and is located to the immediate east of Los Angeles County. Proximity to the San Pedro Bay Port complex (which includes the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach) and access to a transportation and logistics network expanding out across the U.S., makes the San Bernardino region a prime location for companies participating in international trade activity. The purpose of this report is to quantify trade activity in the region, while also estimating the ...

Defining Terrorism: The Evolution Of Terrorism As A Legal Concept In International Law And Its Influence On Definitions In Domestic Legislation, Reuven Young Dec 2006

Defining Terrorism: The Evolution Of Terrorism As A Legal Concept In International Law And Its Influence On Definitions In Domestic Legislation, Reuven Young

Boston College International and Comparative Law Review

This Article examines the evolution of the definition of terrorism at international law and tests the widely held view that international law does not provide a definition of terrorism. It contends that by abstracting from the common elements and themes present in the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council resolutions concerning terrorism, and the multi-lateral anti-terrorism conventions, treaties, and protocols, one can discern a core international law definition of terrorism. The Article then compares this definition to those in the domestic legal systems of the United States, United Kingdom, India, and New Zealand to determine whether (1) international law ...

Corruption And Democratic Performance, Levente Littvay Dec 2006

Corruption And Democratic Performance, Levente Littvay

Political Science Department -- Theses, Dissertations, and Student Scholarship

This dissertation introduces new quantitative methods to comparative politics. These include an approximately unbiased missing data treatment, a first order autoregressive multilevel model for the analysis of cross-sectional longitudinal data, approaches for the separation of cross-sectional and longitudinal predictor effects to identify aggregation bias and a model for the empirical analysis of causal direction. Methods are demonstrated on a model replicating past research on the causes of corruption adding democratic performance as a predictor, than a new model of democratic performance is developed to test Warren’s theoretical propositions that corruption is by nature undemocratic, and finally the causal direction ...

The Impact Of Authority And Agendas In The Management Of Public Authorities: Studying The Relationship Between Public Transportation Authority Boards And Executives, Robert August Schneider

Doctoral Dissertations

Public authorities are a popular form of quasi-governmental institutions and have been extensively chronicled in regards to effective public service delivery. Authorities are exceptionally popular within the public transportation industry but have slowly lost their fiscal power due to the strengthening of parent governments. This dissertation examines the authority structure in public transportation to understand the linkage between this loss of fiscal power and executive management of public authorities by studying the governing board-executive manager relationship. In particular, this dissertation examines the structure and relationship by studying factors impacting relationships and connections between deceased fiscal power and the members recruited ...

The Private Military Firm—Subcontracting Sovereignty: The Commodification Of Military Force And The Fragmentation Of The State’S Authority, Jackson N. Maogoto Nov 2006

The Private Military Firm—Subcontracting Sovereignty: The Commodification Of Military Force And The Fragmentation Of The State’S Authority, Jackson N. Maogoto

Jackson Nyamuya Maogoto

This Article has as its central theme the decentralization of the state’s control over legitimate military force with the consequential diffusion of governmental control that stands to fragment state sovereignty. It argues that the increasing centrality of Private Military Firms (PMFs) to the prosecution of war is creating a changed national security landscape with PMFs increasingly influencing governmental policy both overtly and covertly.

Crush The Sunnis, James Kurth Nov 2006

Crush The Sunnis, James Kurth

Political Science Faculty Works

The article argues that Iraq's Sunni population must be made to pay for the murderous years of the Baathist regime and should be left stateless and bereft of power. The author proposes giving the Shiites southern Iraq in its entirety and Kurds Kurdistan. He acknowledges that Shiites may become puppets of Iran, but not for long. This arrangement would have the added benefit of preserving America's oil supplies in the Middle East.

Deracialization Or Racialization: The Making Of A Black Mayor In Jackson, Mississippi, Byron D. Orey Nov 2006

Deracialization Or Racialization: The Making Of A Black Mayor In Jackson, Mississippi, Byron D. Orey

Faculty Publications: Political Science

In 1997, Harvey Johnson made history by becoming the first black to be elected as mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. Four years prior, Johnson failed to make the Democratic primary runoffs. The following research question is addressed: what explains Johnson’s victory in 1997, when compared to his defeat in 1993? In answering this question, I rely heavily on elite-level interviewing and newspaper accounts. I also examine the black and white vote for Johnson, using aggregate-level election and census data. Gary King’s Ecological Inference technique is used to examine these data. Based on the findings, I conclude that Johnson ran ...
