Political Corruption In The Caribbean Basin : A Comparative Analysis Of Jamaica And Costa Rica, Michael W. Collier

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Political corruption in the Caribbean Basin retards state economic growth and development, undermines government legitimacy, and threatens state security. In spite of recent anti-corruption efforts of intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations (IGO/NGOs), Caribbean political corruption problems appear to be worsening in the post-Cold War period. This dissertation discovers why IGO/NGO efforts to arrest corruption are failing by investigating the domestic and international causes of political corruption in the Caribbean. The dissertation’s theoretical framework centers on an interdisciplinary model of the causes of political corruption built within the rule-oriented constructivist approach to social science. The model first employs a ...

A Model Of Managed Primary Commodities: Coffee And Colombia, Evan Hansen

Political Science and International Relations Undergraduate Theses

This study attempts to track the effects of coffee on the Colombian economy, and by doing so, it also hopes to analyze the Colombian efforts to lessen the effects of coffee on the national economy. By looking at the efforts by the Colombian government and other groups in Colombia, the reader then can see the beginnings of the serious coffee management in Colombia. The Colombians have always attempted to manage coffee, yet in the 1970s, their efforts to use coffee’s revenues to develop largely failed due to an unexpected fluctuation of prices. The coffee boom lasted from 1977 to ...

Unions, Cartels, And The Political Economy Of American Cities: The Chicago Flat Janitors' Union In The Progressive Era And 1920s, John Jentz

Library Faculty Research and Publications

In 1997, Ira Katznelson contributed to the ongoing discussion among social scientists and historians about how to analyze class formation and the development of the American state. He was particularly interested in tying this research to the history of liberalism in an effort to both historicize the generalizations of Louis Hartz and address the question of American exceptionalism. Evaluating the body of research, Katznelson argued that authors had too frequently abstracted the state from its context and then used it to explain the very phenomena that helped define the state's character in the first place. In part to imbed ...

This chapter suggests that Chinese success rests rather on the specific historical circumstances in Southeast Asia during the colonial period and after. A series of crony-like arrangements has been possible because political conditions permitted them,

"I Have Lived Long And Variously In The World": The Politics And Rhetoric Of Edmund Burke, Amy M. Sandidge

Honors Theses

The glow and power of the matter rejuvenates your faculties." One cannot help but react viscerally to Burke; the brilliant, blustering Irishman demands attention and response. Some regard him as "the first and most important exponent" of the "theoretical reaction against. .. the tenets of liberalism ... [which] came to be called conservatism." Coleridge called him "a great man;" Victorian liberals even considered him a fellow utilitarian and "the greatest thinker who ever ...

Why Were Chemical Weapons Not Used In World War Ii?, Jeffrey W. Legro Jan 2000

Why Were Chemical Weapons Not Used In World War Ii?, Jeffrey W. Legro

Political Science Faculty Publications

Chemical warfare had played an important enough role in World War I that there was widespread expectation of its use in World War II. Certainly, Germany's army and its chemists had no qualms about adding poison gas to the Third Reich's arsenal. When war began, however, many of the latest chemical warfare agents were not available in deliverable form. The early successes of conventional-war making, combined with an increasing shortage of raw material, led Germany to deemphasize gas warfare even apart from the fear of Allied retaliation that significantly influenced at least the armed forces.
