The Trouble With Connecticut, Kenneth J. Long Sep 1996

The Trouble With Connecticut, Kenneth J. Long

New England Journal of Public Policy

The problems of Connecticut, this author believes, parallel those of Nigeria, which are described by Chinua Achebe in The Trouble with Nigeria. Both places may be considered dirty, callous, ostentatious, and dishonest. The causes of these and other defects are also similar: unusually large disparities in living standards, high cost of living, localism, and lack of leadership. In Connecticut, gross inequities in taxation seem to intermingle with and reinforce all these roots of unpleasantness.

Implementation Of Early Voting, Lillard E. Richardson Jr., Grant W. Neeley Jul 1996

Implementation Of Early Voting, Lillard E. Richardson Jr., Grant W. Neeley

Political Science Faculty Publications

We examine the early voting process in Tennessee during the election of 1994. By conducting a mail survey of all 95 county registrars, we ascertained the methods and costs of early voting implementation. Generally, the survey reveals a strong belief that early voting encourages greater participation by voters, with turnout data supporting this belief. We find that the ballot type and location of early voting sites play an important role in determining both the costs of early voting and the rate of voter participation.

An American In Paris: Defining American Interests In Post Cold War Europe, Kelly Parker May 1996

An American In Paris: Defining American Interests In Post Cold War Europe, Kelly Parker

Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

For the last fifty years or so, the members of the field of political science have studied the phenomenon known as the Cold War. It has fascinated many scholars and almost demands attention. The reason is this: the Cold War, even though some would argue that it was a governmental affair, affected so much more than military policy. Economies were built around it. Loyalties were built around it. The world divided around it. Most people could not have imagined the end of the Cold War ten years ago. Even now it is difficult to truly grasp the reality of the ...

The Competent Leasing System: Continued Exploitation Of The Apsáalooke People, Benjamin Graham Apr 1996

The Competent Leasing System: Continued Exploitation Of The Apsáalooke People, Benjamin Graham

Political Science and International Relations Undergraduate Theses

The Apsaalooke people of southwestern Montana have a special relationship with their homelands. Unwilling to recognize this relationship, non-Indians have continually taken Apsaalooke lands as those lands appeared to have value. Today, white control of Apsaalooke lands continues though the competent leasing system. Though the abuses taking place within this system deserve both ethical and legal scrutiny, competent leasing as a device to wrest control of Apsaalooke lands has been undeniably successful. As with previous land-grabbing practices of the non-Indian, the success of the competent leasing system depends upon widespread social acceptance and support of dominating policies. By relying upon ...

Bringing Politics Back In: Defense Policy And The Theoretical Study Of Institutions And Processes, Kenneth R. Mayer, Khademian M. Anne Mar 1996

Bringing Politics Back In: Defense Policy And The Theoretical Study Of Institutions And Processes, Kenneth R. Mayer, Khademian M. Anne

Kenneth R Mayer

Application of public administration theory to defense policy and procruemt. Students of public administration, regulatory processes, public bureaucracy, and policy studies rarely focus on defense as their substantive area. leaving the field to those trained in defense studies and international relations. THe result is negligible attention to the domestic political aspects of defense policy and minimal understanding of the administrative aspects of defense policy. We argue that a realistic examination of procurement in a political context of multiple and competing principals illustrates the difficulty of demanding accountability when goals are diverse and heavily debated, measured with difficulty, and where outcomes ...

Rising Temperatures: Rising Tides, Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

Transboundary environmental problems do not distinguish between political boundaries. Global warming is expected to cause thermal expansion of water and melt glaciers. Both are predicted to lead to a rise in sea level. We must enlarge our paradigms to encompass a global reality and reliance upon global participation.
