Democracy And Capitalism: The Issue Joined From Within, Christopher E. Bischoff Dec 1991

Democracy And Capitalism: The Issue Joined From Within, Christopher E. Bischoff

Master's Theses

This study utilizes contemporary and classical literature to illuminate the complexities of Western democracy. Of specific focus is American democracy and the effects that capitalism has had upon democracy in America. The achievement of democracy on the scale of the modern nation-state appears problematic even without the adversarial burdens posed by a capitalist economic consort. It emerges that American democracy is particularly compromised by its roots in liberal tradition. Forced by nature to depend upon the allocative abilities of its economic consort, democracy must endure a relationship that dramatically undermines its ideological orientation. Although American democracy is not yet in ...

Ethical Implications Of Politics In English Speaking West African Countries: The Need For A Greater Ethical Concern, Adeyinka Christopher Thompson Dec 1991

Ethical Implications Of Politics In English Speaking West African Countries: The Need For A Greater Ethical Concern, Adeyinka Christopher Thompson

Master's Theses

This thesis evaluates the ethical implications of policies adopted by politicians in three West African countries: Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. The evaluation focuses on the policies African politicians adopt in their bid to solve two problems facing Africa: corruption, and achieving a democracy.

The evaluation relates selected policies of some African politicians to certain ethical theories propounded by various philosophers. Such questions as the respect politicians show for human life or dignity; the way they manipulate people, using them solely as a means to an end; secrecy in government; and whether their policies are meant for the general good ...

Voting For Protection: An Electoral Model Of Tariff Policy, John A. C. Conybeare Dec 1991

Voting For Protection: An Electoral Model Of Tariff Policy, John A. C. Conybeare

Department of Political Science Publications

The political economy of trade policy has largely neglected popular elections. When legislatures determine protection, politicians supply tariffs that are demanded by their constituents. A model of this political market is specified and tested with data related to the McKinley Tariff of 1890. An index of the extent to which tariff protection accrued to individual congressional districts is applied, along with demand and supply variables, to three questions: Did representatives supply tariffs to their districts as the model predicts? Did they vote in accordance with the district tariff interest in the roll-call vote on the McKinley Tariff? Did electors reward ...

A Reference Group Theory Of Partisan Coalitions, Arthur H. Miller, Christopher Wlezien, Anne Hildreth Nov 1991

A Reference Group Theory Of Partisan Coalitions, Arthur H. Miller, Christopher Wlezien, Anne Hildreth

Department of Political Science Publications

Group cleavages and coalitions have long been an important aspect of how politicians view everyday American politics. Moreover, there is growing evidence which suggests that during recent years groups as actors in the political arena, and perceived group differences, have become increasingly visible to the public and more important in determining the political behavior of the average citizen. Most importantly, the types of group voters themselves associate with and the extent to which these groups are connected with the parties or particular candidates has important implications for structuring voters' political decisions. Analyses of correlations between thermometer ratings of various social ...

Preemptive Fund-Raising And Challenger Profile In Senate Elections, Peverill Squire Nov 1991

Preemptive Fund-Raising And Challenger Profile In Senate Elections, Peverill Squire

Department of Political Science Publications

Since 1980 the amount of money raised by incumbent senators during the first four years of their terms has increased dramatically. A widely held belief is that having a large campaign account well before the election scares the strongest potential challengers from making the race. Findings presented here show that almost every senator now engages in extensive early money raising, but that those senators who have the biggest number of potentially strong opponents back home are the most active in this regard. Large sums of early money do not, however, produce weaker challengers. Instead, the strength of the challenger is ...

Watch The Process, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The reason for the 1990 census is now at hand: The Reapportionment Commission is in place, and the process has just begun. The redrawing of local state and congressional boundary lines that define districts by populations to be represented at these three levels of government is upon us, and bears close watching."
