An Examination Of The Irrelevance Of The Term Neoconservative As Used In American Ideological Debates, Mark C. Stanczak Dec 1990

An Examination Of The Irrelevance Of The Term Neoconservative As Used In American Ideological Debates, Mark C. Stanczak

Master's Theses

This study compared, by analysis of their publications, various people who are considered to be part of the neoconservative movement in the United States. A definition was developed, and a sample of neoconservatives was examined to see if they adhered to the definition. The examination centered around these people's individual views, as published, on economics and the Welfare State; the scope of government in a society; the Cold War and its effect on community; religion; and stability, the state and social justice.

The analysis of their publications leads to the conclusion that there is no cohesive movement that can ...

Anarcho-Capitalist Threads In Modern Libertarianism: The Social Thought Of Murray Rothbard, Larry M. Hall Dec 1990

Anarcho-Capitalist Threads In Modern Libertarianism: The Social Thought Of Murray Rothbard, Larry M. Hall

Doctoral Dissertations

Murray Rothbard's anarcho-capitalism represents an largely unexplored portion of American political thought. Despite an overwhelming array of publications on politics, economics, history, methodology, and other realms of social theory, his writings have received very little attention from the community of social theorists.

A significant reason for the lack of analysis concerns the unique and radical nature of Rothbard's thought. Although this research concludes that his form of anarchism is surely an American phenomenon, he combines the influences upon his writings in ways which ultimately separate him from even his libertarian colleagues. Still, he is an extremely influential figure ...

Politics And Education: The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade, Teresa Squires Osborne Oct 1990

Politics And Education: The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade, Teresa Squires Osborne

Dissertations and Theses

The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade of 1980, carried out in the aftermath,of a long and destructive revolution, was able, in five months time, to decrease the nation's illiteracy rate from 50 percent to 13 percent. The newly fonned Nicaraguan government, recognizing the political nature of education, viewed its Literacy Crusade as a major step· in the development of a "new", post-revolutionary Nicaragua.

As a means of comparison, two other literacy campaigns are also examined: the Cuban campaign of 1961, and the UNESCO-sponsored Experimental World Literacy Programme, in place from 1965-1973.

The Cuban campaign served as a precursor to the ...

National Integration And The Nigerian Educational System, Olufunke M. Sanusi Jul 1990

National Integration And The Nigerian Educational System, Olufunke M. Sanusi

ETD Collection for AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library

The purpose of this study is to analyze the various factors affecting national unity or integration in Nigeria. The study sought to determine the extent to which education, especially civil education, could help bring this about.

Through the use of documents, it was found that, not only was the educational system inefficient, but it was also deliberately neglected by both the colonialists as well as the national elites.

However, this author suggests that to help promote and achieve a government policy of national unity, there is an urgent need for political re-orientation in the country. This can only be achieved ...

Black Politics In North Carolina: A Case Study Of The Second Congressional District, Zaphon R. Wilson May 1990

Black Politics In North Carolina: A Case Study Of The Second Congressional District, Zaphon R. Wilson

ETD Collection for AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library

An important characteristic of contemporary research on black political participation in the United States has been its emphasis on black electoral behavior. Few studies, however, have examined in detail the impacts of political structure on black electoral behavior or the influences of the Good Government Movement, known as Progressive Reform, in the south on black politics. This study examines black politics in the Second Congressional District in North Carolina. The purpose of the study is to examine how black political activity is influenced by government structure on the local, state and congressional levels. Case studies were conducted of two congressional ...

Jury Selection And Representation: A Jury Composition Study Of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, North Carolina From 1976-77 Compared To 1980-81, Norman Smith

ETD Collection for AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library

The main objective of this thesis theme is to examine a facet of the political science discipline, viz., judicial process and its relationship to the trial by jury concept, i.e., jury selection and representation in a particular locale. Thus, the locus for this intricate project will be a jury composition study of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, North Carolina jury pool for two biennium periods, 1976-77 and 1980-81, at the Twenty-Sixth Judicial District for the State of North Carolina. That is, to compare the socio-demographic characteristics of the total population of Charlotte-Mecklenburg to those persons who served in the jury pool ...

Political Influences On The National Park Service : Past And Present, Bonnie Sachatello May 1990

Political Influences On The National Park Service : Past And Present, Bonnie Sachatello

Master's Theses

Since the beginning of the Reagan Administration in 1981, there has been a dramatic change in policies affecting the national parks and the National Park service. The Department of the Interior's goals combined with the economic strategies of this Administration have brought about new park policies that have departed sharply from those of the last two decades. This thesis is designed to distill some of the changes evidenced in park policy and the Park service under the Reagan Administration.

A Review Of Mass Media Models In Order To Better Understand Voter Turnout, Kelly Canady Apr 1990

A Review Of Mass Media Models In Order To Better Understand Voter Turnout, Kelly Canady

Political Science and International Relations Undergraduate Theses

It is important to understand the phenomena of voting in the United States where disparity of turnout has plagued researchers over the past fifty years. Understanding voting phenomena may enable researchers to determine the disparity in turnout rates and eventually improve them. It is also important to understand the role of the mass media, and the effects it may have on the electoral system in the United States. In order to understand these effects, however, people must become familiar with the various models that attempt to explain how the electorate utilizes the mass media. It is also important to become ...

A Hybridization Of An Allison-Barber Model Of Decision-Making In Explanation Of The Iran-Contra Affair, James Feucht Apr 1990

A Hybridization Of An Allison-Barber Model Of Decision-Making In Explanation Of The Iran-Contra Affair, James Feucht

Political Science and International Relations Undergraduate Theses

The Iran-Contra Affair of the 1980's created such a scandal upon its discovery that it was likened to the Watergate scandal'of the 1970's. For a time there were fears that a second U. S. President might be forced to resign his office in disgrace. Serious questions were raised about the intent and direction of the U. S. foreign policy. I will argue that the entire affair occurred as a result of a combination of a certain Presidential type and a certain process of decision-making. I will rely heavily on the work of Graham T. Allison and James ...

Franco-American Relations And The Emergence Of French Nuclear Armament, 1939-1962, Regis Hugues Philippon Apr 1990

Franco-American Relations And The Emergence Of French Nuclear Armament, 1939-1962, Regis Hugues Philippon

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

France and the United States stand out as two major pioneer countries in the development of nuclear science. It was logical for France to join the nuclear club. But due to the extended responsibilities such an option implies, a lengthy difference of opinion developed between France and the United States. The former asserted its rights and its worldwide influence heedless of the decolonization process. The latter, heavily committed to the Western defense and its global interests, opposed the development of a strike force that it could not control. This disagreement led France to make specific reservations toward decision-making of the ...

Measuring The Impacts Of Credit Restrictions On The Trade Performance Of Debtor Nations , Velupillai Premakumar Jan 1990

Measuring The Impacts Of Credit Restrictions On The Trade Performance Of Debtor Nations , Velupillai Premakumar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The interdependence of the developed world economy and that of the third world has been increasingly evident since the debt crisis of the eighties. International trade declined with the consequence of global economic stagnation. One major contributor to the cumulative and self reinforcing nature of the crisis is the trade impacts of the restrictive capital flows. Trade models applied to extract the debt-to-trade linkages have generally over looked the micro economic behavior that lead to the observed macroeconomic performance. Micro economic models abound that examine the theoretical concerns of this issue. This study re-examines the theoretical considerations, especially as they ...

Exploring The University-Industry-Government High Technology Research Triad: Public Policy Ramifications Of Biotechnology , Brian Josef Reichel Jan 1990

Exploring The University-Industry-Government High Technology Research Triad: Public Policy Ramifications Of Biotechnology , Brian Josef Reichel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation represents an alternative format, which includes four papers submitted to scholarly journals. Section one demonstrates the applicability of cooptation theory to explain increased university-industry biotechnology research ties and the corresponding strains placed on the traditional university structure from such relationships. Public policies driving university cooptation are analyzed and particular cases of organizational strain are specified;Section two combines special interest group theory and the organizational resource-dependence model to explain Iowa's public policy of stimulating biotechnology research. Iowa's attempts to address the farm crisis through economic development strategies relying on biotechnology are investigated in this paper. The ...

Between Hierarchy And Market: Industrial Reform In The People's Republic Of China In An Institutional Perspective , Xiao-Jia Ge Jan 1990

Between Hierarchy And Market: Industrial Reform In The People's Republic Of China In An Institutional Perspective , Xiao-Jia Ge

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

By employing an institutional perspective, this study analyzes industrial reform in the People's Republic of China (PRC), particularly the reform of state-enterprise relations since 1978. By viewing institutional reform as a process of changing rules and procedures governing both state-enterprise relations and micro-economic organizational behavior, the study gives a detailed account of the evolutionary process of the PRC's industrial reform and of the continuities and discontinuities that this reform has involved. Using Kornai's theoretical framework, particularly the concepts of paternalism and soft budget constraints, phenomena seen as symptomatic of the syndromes described by Kornai were analyzed through ...

Unofficial Latvian Political Organizations In The Gorbachev Era: Their Evolution, Accomplishments, And Goals, Peter Albertins Jan 1990

Unofficial Latvian Political Organizations In The Gorbachev Era: Their Evolution, Accomplishments, And Goals, Peter Albertins

Honors Theses

Since the people called Latvians began living on the shores of the Baltic Sea, they have almost continually been in conflict with their neighbors, including the Estonians, Lithuanians, Swedes, Germans, and Russians. The major enemy to the Latvians over the centuries, however, has been the Russians. Perhaps this is because the Russians always wanted access to the Baltic Sea and the rest of Europe, but whatever the case, Russians and Latvians have not had a friendly history.

John Rawls, The Conception Of A Liberal Self, And The Communitarian Critique, Johnathan Edward Mansfield Jan 1990

John Rawls, The Conception Of A Liberal Self, And The Communitarian Critique, Johnathan Edward Mansfield

Dissertations and Theses

John Rawls' A Theory of Justice stands as the single most important work in the Anglo-American liberal tradition after World War II. In A Theory of Justice, Rawls revives the social contract doctrine in order to determine principles of justice that would be chosen by persons who are free and equal moral individuals. Since Rawls believes that no single conception of the good can establish justice in a pluralistic society, he posits a set of principles of right which are prior to any particular good. Thus his theory, which he calls "justice as fairness," is deontological. Since its publication in ...

Turkey's Experience With Corporatism, Nilgun Onder Jan 1990

Turkey's Experience With Corporatism, Nilgun Onder

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this study is to explore Turkey’s experience with corporatism from the founding of the Republic in 1923 onwards. In this study, corporatism is defined as a particular political structure within the capitalist system which acts as a linkage mechanism between the state and society. It is basically related to labour and capital organizations, and their relationship to the state.

The analysis of the Turkish case remains loyal to the traditional authoritarian/liberal corporatism classification. It is asked whether Turkey exhibits the characteristics of authoritarian corporatism or liberal corporatism, or both? Was there a transition from one ...
