Political Self-Efficacy Tested, Douglas Madsen Jun 1987

Political Self-Efficacy Tested, Douglas Madsen

Department of Political Science Publications

A subset of citizens in a democratic system directly test their political self-efficacy by petitioning government for assistance of one kind or another. Drawing on survey data gathered in India in 1967, this investigation focuses on the consequences of success or failure for perceived self-efficacy and for perceived governmetn responsiveness. The analysis demonstrates that (1) successful petitioners come to enjoy a somewhat enhanced sense of self-efficacy but do not view government as particulary responsive, (2) unsuccessful petitioners do not see themselves as inefficacious but--possibly instead--do see government responsiveness in distinctly negative terms, and, (3) the kind of evidence that can ...

An Analysis Of The Law Of The Sea And Outer Space Law : Claims Over The Natural Resources Of The "Commons", Robin Elizabeth Lewis May 1987

An Analysis Of The Law Of The Sea And Outer Space Law : Claims Over The Natural Resources Of The "Commons", Robin Elizabeth Lewis

Master's Theses

As new areas of the world and outer space have been discovered and explored, man has had to develop regulations to govern the use of these new areas. However, it was not until man possessed the technological means of extracting or using the resources of these new areas that there was an urgent need to develop regulations for the oceans and space. Although some regulations have been established in regards to such areas as the deep sea-bed and remote sensing, there is still a need for the international community's acceptance of these laws. Under-developed nations view the resources discovered ...

Nato Battlefield Strategy For The Conventional Defense Of Central Europe, Patrick Joseph Geary May 1987

Nato Battlefield Strategy For The Conventional Defense Of Central Europe, Patrick Joseph Geary

Master's Theses

Although we live in a time in which strategies using nuclear weapons dominate the attention of most defense analysts, there are reasons why more attention should be paid to conventional defense strategy. This thesis explores NATO's strategy for defending Central Europe with conventional battlefield weapons. The discussion centers on the military and political complexities involved in the strategy of Forward Defense. Included also is a brief history of NATO, highlighting the political and military events that helped shape today's conventional defense arrangements. Particular emphasis is placed on illustrating the methods and factors involved in the implementation of Forward ...

Harry Lurie's Assessment And Prescription: An Early View Of Social Workers' Roles And Responsibilities Regarding Political Action, Joe M. Schriver May 1987

Harry Lurie's Assessment And Prescription: An Early View Of Social Workers' Roles And Responsibilities Regarding Political Action, Joe M. Schriver

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Harry Lawrence Lurie's recommendations and analyses concerning social workers' involvement in political action are reviewed. By reviewing some of Lurie's concerns and activities from the 1930's into the 1950's in this area, it is possible to gain helpful guidance and insight into contemporary concerns about social workers in the political arena. Lurie argued consistently for greater involvement by social workers in political action as individuals, as members of professional organizations, and in coalition with other groups outside of social work who were concerned with progressive social change. Lurie also articulated many of the conditions preventing effective ...

The Failure Of The Destitute Mother's Bill: The Use Of Political Power In Social Welfare, Eve P. Smith May 1987

The Failure Of The Destitute Mother's Bill: The Use Of Political Power In Social Welfare, Eve P. Smith

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although social and economic conditions and prevailing popular philosophies may affect the success or failure of an attempt at change in social welfare policy and practice, the relative strengths and weaknesses of the political forces for and against the change may be more important. In 1897, fourteen years before the passage of the first U.S. Mothers' Pension law in Illinois, New York State Senator John Ahearn attempted such a law in New York. Although the bill was passed unanimously by both houses of the State Legislature, it was never signed into law. The reason was that the children's ...

The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas Apr 1987

The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas

Theses and Major Papers

The ultimate goal of the U.S. Maritime Strategy is to project power into all the oceans of the world. By projecting power over this vast a geographic area, the U.S. is able to provide a deterrent force that will inhibit the development of a significant hostile military action, anywhere in the world. The ability to support this global peacekeeping force hinges on the capability of the U.S. to provide a strong logistic support organization. From a waterborne perspective, the Indian Ocean is the one geographic area of the world that presents the greatest logistic challenge. The U ...

Contemporary Populism In Montana Alive And Well?, Kara Stermitz Apr 1987

Contemporary Populism In Montana Alive And Well?, Kara Stermitz

Political Science and International Relations Undergraduate Theses

The research undertaken in this thesis investigates the possibility of the existence of Populism in Montana. Arriving at this topic was no profound discovery. After reading about Populism in Montana history books and listening to lectures and discussions in history and political science classes, I became enthralled with the movement known as Populism. I had always found Populism interesting and desired to learn more about the movement. Because my family is in the ranching business, I was very intrigued by the accounts I read about concerning attempts made by Populist agriculturalists to unite farmers and ranchers in an organization that ...

The Mass Media And Vietnam, Michael Uda Apr 1987

The Mass Media And Vietnam, Michael Uda

Political Science and International Relations Undergraduate Theses

The question many Vietnam scholars have asked is, “What went wrong with American policy in Vietnam Fewer have asked, "What impact did the mass media have on the way the public viewed the war ?" Fewer yet asked the question, “What was the relationship between the government, the media, and the public in the way policy was formed, and the war was fought, and what were the relative impacts of each of these agents on the way the war was conducted ?" This question shall be the focal point of this study. Each agent (i.e. the mass media, the public, and ...

A Comparative Study Of The Role Of Certain Political Communications Strategies Contrasting The 1980 Incumbent Campaign Of Jimmy Carter And The 1984 Incumbent Campaign Of Ronald Reagan, Brian Canady

Communication Studies Undergraduate Theses

In this study, we will examine the effects that strategies, for the use of available political communication channels, can have on potential and existing political careers. Using the incumbent campaigns of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, we will discuss the ability of each to utilize these strategies in their campaign communication, and the effect which those abilities had on their political success, or lack thereof. Mr. Reagan, we will see, has been extremely successful in his use of communication channels. Mr. Carter, on the other hand, attempted, but was unsuccessful at communicating a positive public image. In order to be ...

Recruitment Contrasts In A Divided Charismatic Movement, Douglas Madsen, Peter G. Snow Mar 1987

Recruitment Contrasts In A Divided Charismatic Movement, Douglas Madsen, Peter G. Snow

Department of Political Science Publications

This research report analyzes the evolution of the bond between a charismatic leader and his mass following. Its empirical focus is the case of Juan Peron and the Peronist movement in Argentina. After discussing stages in the evolution of charisma, we review our earlier findings showing that by 1965 there was clear separation between those Peronists devoted to the movement and those Peronists devoted to the man. We note distinctive features in the social and attitudinal profiles of each and then turn to our principal concern, the recruitment of new blood into each Peronist camp. Personalist youth turn out to ...

Residential Mobility And Voter Turnout, Peverill Squire, Raymond E. Wolfinger, David P. Glass Mar 1987

Residential Mobility And Voter Turnout, Peverill Squire, Raymond E. Wolfinger, David P. Glass

Department of Political Science Publications

We examine the characteristics of a largely ignored low-turnout group--people who have recently moved. We find that neither demographic nor attitudinal attributes explain their lower turnout. Instead, the requirement that citizens must register anew after each change in residence constitutes the key stumbling block in the trip to the polls. Since nearly one-third of the nation moves every two years, moving has a large impact on national turnout rates. We offer a proposal to reduce the effect of residential mobility on turnout and estimate that turnout would increase by nine percentage points if the impact of moving could be removed ...
