The Illinois Appellate System Procedure And Practice, Robert L. Kamholz Jr. Dec 1974

The Illinois Appellate System Procedure And Practice, Robert L. Kamholz Jr.

Honors Projects

The appellate procedure and practice which characterize the Illinois judicial system comprise an awesome body of factual material which is, I am certain, impossible to present in one volume no matter how bulky it may be. This volume does not attempt to describe the whole of that procedure. It also is not a guide suitable for legal reference. It is, however, a general description of the superficial workings of the Illinois appellate system. In most cases, procedure is the only topic of discussion. What substantive information there is contained in the discussion exists to shed light on how the practice ...

Luke Pryor Blackburn: The Good Samaritan, Nancy Baird Dec 1974

Luke Pryor Blackburn: The Good Samaritan, Nancy Baird

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Luke Pryor Blackburn, Kentucky’s only physician governor, is one of the forgotten public health figures of the 19th century. As health officer of Natchez in the 1850s he instituted the first effective quarantine used in the Mississippi Valley and became a strong advocate of its use as a preventive measure in the control of yellow fever. During his lifetime Blackburn also became well known for his unselfish aid to communities stricken with the disease.

In March 1878 announced his candidacy for governor of his native state. Local politicians scoffed at his chances for election, but his actions during ...

The Value System As A Source Of Political Attitudes, William S. Maddox Dec 1974

The Value System As A Source Of Political Attitudes, William S. Maddox

Masters Theses

The field of political psychology focuses on specific political behavior as it relates to a total measure of the individual. This research effort chose as a possible summation of that totality the value system, defined as any individual's description of his total image of the world and the behavior which he prefers in dealing with that world. Within this perspective, political attitudes are the result of the expression of a broad and abstract value system with reference to a specific attitude object.

The research design utilized Q methodology to gather empirical descriptions of values systems toward a political issue ...

Obscenity Standards In Canada And The United States: A Comparative Study In Constitutional Law, Ronald Edward Dean Dec 1974

Obscenity Standards In Canada And The United States: A Comparative Study In Constitutional Law, Ronald Edward Dean

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to study the comparative constitutional development of obscenity law in Canada and the United States. The research focuses on analysis of case law with particular emphasis of Supreme Court decisions in the two countries. Obscenity law is not static, but is, rather, an active and on-going area of constitutional law.

The central problem in the legal approach to obscenity has been the development of a definition. The original conceptualization of obscenity for both Canada and the United States came from an English decision in 1868, which dominated the field until the late 1950's ...

From Stockholm To Nairobi To Caracas: Route Toward A New International Law?, Lynton K. Caldwell Oct 1974

From Stockholm To Nairobi To Caracas: Route Toward A New International Law?, Lynton K. Caldwell

IUSTITIA

In the future, as in the past, one function of international law will be to formalize and clarify procedures to deal with emergent problems. The international environmental developments noted in this paper, e.g. global monitoring, supervision of the seabed, protection of endangered species, resource allocation, and many others, will require institutional arrangements differing from those with which nations have had experience. Innovation in legal principles and procedures is an almost certain consequence of such developments. Innovations in principle have been among the more obvious outputs of the international environmental conferences and programs since 1968. As these principles are translated ...

China's Use Of International Law In Border Disputes: The Cases Of India And The Soviet Union, Larry R. Schreiter Oct 1974

China's Use Of International Law In Border Disputes: The Cases Of India And The Soviet Union, Larry R. Schreiter

IUSTITIA

Despite American "containment" in the fifties and sixties, China was nevertheless a major actor on the international scene. The loci of China's practice of international politics ranged from the Bandung Conference to its ideological foray into European politics following the Hungarian rebellion in 1956. Along with this activism in the international environment, China turned her attention in the late fifties to the question of gaining mutual agreements with her neighbors on the delineation and regulation of the boundaries. This concern brought about some marked changes in bilateral foreign policy, and required dealings of both an ideological as well as ...

Communist Chinese Attitudes Toward United Nations Membership 1945-1971 An Essay, Victoria E. Docauer Oct 1974

Communist Chinese Attitudes Toward United Nations Membership 1945-1971 An Essay, Victoria E. Docauer

IUSTITIA

Let us here examine the question of Communist Chinese representation in the United Nations in the context of a broader question: the attitude of Communist China toward international law. Was it only United States interference which kept Communist China out of the United Nations? What is the position of Communist China in regard to international law? Has the People's Republic been the lawless nation that it is sometimes described to be? In an attempt to provide questions, one must examine those arguments which emphasize the lawlessness of Communist China and seek to determine the attitude of the Communist Chinese ...

Opportunity For Farmers, Clayton K. Yeutter Oct 1974

Opportunity For Farmers, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

I am very pleased to be here in the Missouri Delta, among some of the people who are really making our farming decisions these days. I think one of the most effective economic decisions we have made recently was to turn farmers loose to manage their own farms, and to stop trying to manage them by long-distance from Washington. The wisdom of that decision is on display here in the Missouri Delta.

The Decay Of Support For Monarchy And The Hitler Regime In The Federal Republic Of Germany, G. R. Boynton, Gerhard Loewenberg Oct 1974

The Decay Of Support For Monarchy And The Hitler Regime In The Federal Republic Of Germany, G. R. Boynton, Gerhard Loewenberg

Department of Political Science Publications

Public support for the existing institutions of government depends in part on public perceptions of the alternatives. This assertion will not come as news in those parts of the world where changing the regime is a regular part of political life. In France, for example, where regimes have been numbered to distinguish them from each other, it is common knowledge that public evaluations of the Fourth Republic depended on comparisons with the Third, that especially in its early years the Fifth Republic was frequently judged by comparison with the Fourth, and that in particularly sophisticated circles these more or less ...

National Income Insurance: Some Implications For Political And Economic Inequality, John B. Williamson Oct 1974

National Income Insurance: Some Implications For Political And Economic Inequality, John B. Williamson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Several co-workers and I have recently completed an evaluation of sixty-three anti-poverty programs and proposals (Williamson, et. al., 1973, 1974). This paper briefly describes the study and some of our findings by way of introduction to the presentation and defense of a national income insurance proposal, This proposal is a synthesis of three highly rated anti-poverty strategies. It would within a few years have a substantial impact on the extent of the economic inequality in the United States.
