Becoming 'Holistically Indegenous': Young Muslims And Political Participation In Canada, Kathy Bullock, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

While media and the government often focus on the supposed "radicalization" of Muslim youth in Canada, our research explores the more complicated and nuanced political identities among 20 young Canadian Muslims. Using semi-structured in-depth interviews with these youth in the Greater Toronto Area and in London, Ontario, we explore these young citizens' concepts of political participation; conceptions of the self as a political actor; formal, informal, and civic political involvement; and the relationship between their religious and Canadian identities. Our research is grounded in a positive and pluralistic politics of care, respect, and engagement. We treated Muslim youth as similar ...

Securitizing Citizenship: (B)Ordering Practices And Strategies Of Resistance, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking Dec 2012

Securitizing Citizenship: (B)Ordering Practices And Strategies Of Resistance, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

This article builds upon Yasemin Soysal's early work on post-national citizenship as constituting sites of resistance in contemporary European politics. Post-national citizenship provides every person with the right and duty of participation in the authority structures and public life of a polity, regardless of their historical ties to that community. This celebration of human rights as a world-level organising principle is, however, constantly challenged by liberal discourses and practices aimed to securitise identities and citizenships through the bordering of space, place and identities. Proceeding from a critical take on securitisation, we propose that in addition to a focus on ...

The Discursive Frames Of Political Psychology, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking, Catarina Kinnvall Dec 2011

The Discursive Frames Of Political Psychology, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking, Catarina Kinnvall

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

The aim of this article is to apply elements of contemporary social theory to the major theoretical, methodological, and ideological divisions across political psychology and to consider both the origins and the impact of a range of theories and models. In so doing, we clarify some of the complexity surrounding the discursive and cultural origins of political psychology. On the basis of this analysis, we aim to overcome the redundant binaries and dualisms—both conceptual and geo‐spatial—that have characterized the field up to now. These binary pairs relate to matters of epistemology, ideology, and methodology, and we show ...

Global Insecurity And Citizenship Strategies: Young Muslims In The West, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

This article is set in the contemporary context of global challenges: economic crises, state deformations, and rapidly accelerating flows of people, ideas, and ideals. It has two main aims. One is to establish theoretical and empirical links between securitization studies and analyses of citizenship in the light of globalization, multiculturalism and discourses on terror. The second is to illustrate how macro events play out at the collective and individual level in terms of socio-psychological (in)securities that condition different citizenship strategies. The empirical basis for the article includes our studies of Western Muslims in the Netherlands, France, the UK, Sweden ...

The Role Of The Media In Electoral Behaviour: A Canadian Perspective, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

This work, divided in four sections, is a critical assessment of Canadian perspectives on the role of the media in electoral behaviour, notably on the roles media play in setting or responding to the agenda in the heat of election campaigns. The first section of the article highlights important Canadian methodological and empirical contributions to behaviouralism. The second section of the article, on culture, ideology, and discourse, illustrates general patterns of contrast between the Canadian and American political cultures through an exploration of the comparative role of negative and attack advertisements in election campaigns. The third section of the article ...

Reframing Campaigning: Communications, The Media And Elections In Canada, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

This article is a critical assessment of Canadian perspectives on the role of the media in electoral behaviour, notably on the roles media play in setting or responding to the agenda in the heat of election campaigns. Research into the role of the media in election campaigns has been conducted within the broadly behaviouralist tradition of political scientific research. The article begins with a brief contextualization of the behaviouralist research tradition in Canada. Within the specific context of Canadian history and its social structure, the introduction explains how the very questions that Canadians have posed regarding media/campaign interactions have ...

Security, Subjectivity And Space In Postcolonial Europe: Muslims In The Diaspora, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking Dec 2008

Security, Subjectivity And Space In Postcolonial Europe: Muslims In The Diaspora, Catarina Kinnvall, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

In this article, we call into question the assumptions that undergird conceptions of boundary, territory, community and ethno-cultural belonging in the constitution of European security. Both the term ‘human security’ as defined by development and human rights scholars and ‘securitisation’ as conceptualised by critical security studies concern the socio-psychological aspects of security. Yet, few attempts have been made to seriously discuss the psychological effects of securitisation on subjectivity and space. There is, as we will argue, a tendency in much literature to use concepts of ‘existential security’, ‘fear’, ‘needs’ and the ‘politics of belonging’ – obviously connected to the human mind ...

Dissolving The Diaspora: Dialogical Practice In The Development Of Deep Multiculturalism, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking Dec 2007

Dissolving The Diaspora: Dialogical Practice In The Development Of Deep Multiculturalism, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

This article is an exposition of deep or critical multiculturalism that is grounded in a mutually respectful dialogue. Such multiculturalism names historical oppressions, recognizes the structural causes of injustice and inequality, and is profoundly open to cultural critique, challenge and change. In order to promote such a multicultural practice, the article makes the case for a dialogical politics of deep and mutual respect in which ethno‐religious sensibilities are validated and welcomed in their rich diversity. In doing so, the article draws upon the authorʼs empirical research on the Muslim minority in contemporary Canada.
