Summary: Advancing Evidence Based Social Policies Through Intergovernmental Data Sharing Partnerships, Dennis P. Culhane Sep 2019

Summary: Advancing Evidence Based Social Policies Through Intergovernmental Data Sharing Partnerships, Dennis P. Culhane

Wharton PPI B-School for Public Policy Seminar Summaries

In response to the challenge of addressing complex social problems with limited resources, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and Congress have called for evidence-based initiatives to facilitate program evaluation and policy research. In 2016, Congress established the Commission on Evidence Based Policy Making to make recommendations on how to accomplish this. While Congress considers mechanisms to link data from federal agencies on a national level, there is much that the federal government can learn from the use of integrated data systems (IDS) at the state and local levels.

West Point Books

The Iraq War has been the costliest U.S. conflict since the Vietnam War. To date, few official studies have been conducted to review what happened, why it happened, and what lessons should be drawn. The U.S. Army in the Iraq War is the Army's initial operational level analysis of this conflict, written in narrative format, with assessments and lessons embedded throughout the work. This study reviews the conflict from a Landpower perspective and includes the contributions of coalition allies, the U.S. Marine Corps, and special operations forces. Modern Kyoto: Building For Ceremony And Commemoration, 1868–1940, Alice Y. Tseng Oct 2018

Modern Kyoto: Building For Ceremony And Commemoration, 1868–1940, Alice Y. Tseng

UH Press Book Previews

Can an imperial city survive, let alone thrive, without an emperor? Alice Y. Tseng answers this intriguing question in Modern Kyoto, a comprehensive study of the architectural and urban projects carried out in the old capital following Emperor Meiji’s move to Tokyo in 1868. Tseng contends that Kyoto—from the time of the relocation to the height of the Asia-Pacific War—remained critical to Japan’s emperor-centered national agenda as politicians, planners, historians, and architects mobilized the city’s historical connection to the imperial house to develop new public architecture, infrastructure, and urban spaces. Royal births, weddings, enthronements, and ...

Liminality Of The Japanese Empire: Border Crossings From Okinawa To Colonial Taiwan, Hiroko Matsuda Oct 2018

Liminality Of The Japanese Empire: Border Crossings From Okinawa To Colonial Taiwan, Hiroko Matsuda

UH Press Book Previews

Okinawa, one of the smallest prefectures of Japan, has drawn much international attention because of the long-standing presence of US bases and the people’s resistance against them. In recent years, alternative discourses on Okinawa have emerged due to the territorial disputes over the Senkaku Islands, and the media often characterizes Okinawa as the borderland demarcating Japan, China (PRC), and Taiwan (ROC). While many politicians and opinion makers discuss Okinawa’s national and security interests, little attention is paid to the local perspective toward the national border and local residents’ historical experiences of border crossings.

Through archival research and first-hand ...

Food Safety After Fukushima: Scientific Citizenship And The Politics Of Risk, Nicolas Sternsdorff-Cisterna Oct 2018

Food Safety After Fukushima: Scientific Citizenship And The Politics Of Risk, Nicolas Sternsdorff-Cisterna

UH Press Book Previews

The triple disaster that struck Japan in March 2011 forced people living there to confront new risks in their lives. Despite the Japanese government’s reassurance that radiation exposure would be small and unlikely to affect the health of the general population, many questioned the government’s commitment to protecting their health. The disaster prompted them to become vigilant about limiting their risk exposure, and food emerged as a key area where citizens could determine their own levels of acceptable risk.

Food Safety after Fukushima examines the process by which notions about what is safe to eat were formulated after ...

Is Judaism Democratic? Reflections From Theory And Practice Throughout The Ages, Leonard J. Greenspoon Oct 2018

Is Judaism Democratic? Reflections From Theory And Practice Throughout The Ages, Leonard J. Greenspoon

Purdue University Press Book Previews

As government by the people, democracy has always had its proponents as well as opponents. What forms of government have Jewish leaders, both with and without actual political power, favored? Not surprisingly, many options have been offered theoretically and in practice. Perhaps more surprisingly, democracy has been at the heart of most systems of governance. Biblical Israel was largely a monarchy, but many writers of the Bible were critical of the excesses that almost always arise when human kings take charge: the general populace loses its freedom. In rabbinic Judaism, the majority ruled, and many principles that support modern democratic ...

Mahathir’S Islam: Mahathir Mohamad On Religion And Modernity In Malaysia, Sven Schottmann Oct 2018

Mahathir’S Islam: Mahathir Mohamad On Religion And Modernity In Malaysia, Sven Schottmann

UH Press Book Previews

Mahathir Mohamad’s legacy as Malaysia’s longest serving prime minister (1981–2003) is deeply controversial. His engagement with Islam, the religion of just over half Malaysia’s population, has often been dismissed as partisan maneuvering. Yet his willingness to countenance a more prominent place for Islam in government and society is what distinguished him from other modernist politicians, and his instinct to set Malaysian politics against the backdrop of the wider Muslim world was politically astute.

Author Sven Schottmann argues that Mahathir’s transformative effect on Malaysia can only be fully appreciated if we also take him seriously as ...
