Allentown's Neighborhood Improvement Zone: Five Years Of Failed Community And Economic Development, Christopher Woods Aug 2019

Allentown's Neighborhood Improvement Zone: Five Years Of Failed Community And Economic Development, Christopher Woods

Masters Theses

Community and economic development decisions affect every aspect of city life. Allentown, Pennsylvania is currently in the midst of redevelopment financed by one of the largest state subsidies in the commonwealth’s history, the Neighborhood Improvement Zone (NIZ) (Assad, 2017). The NIZ is an unprecedented state tax subsidy that most closely resembles locally-financed Tax Increment Financing (TIFs). Despite being the most utilized financing tool for urban redevelopment, the impacts of TIFs are still largely unstudied. The burgeoning literature trying to assess the effectiveness of TIFs is often too small in scale, focusing just on the redevelopment zones isolated from their ...

A Study On Poverty In Tajikistan, Holly Gwydir Jan 2019

A Study On Poverty In Tajikistan, Holly Gwydir

The Libraries Student Research Prize

Tajikistan is one of the most impoverished countries in the world today, with low rates of human development as well as inadequate social services. The state currently faces several development challenges, beginning with inhospitable geography that severely limits the expansion of an agricultural sector and prevents the development of adequate transportation capabilities. Tajikistan has a legacy of colonialism that was characterized by repression and stagnation, and ultimately assisted the development of poor institutions that continue to plague Tajikistan’s governance today. Finally, Tajikistan’s history of violent conflict has served to decimate financial resources as well as state infrastructure. The ...

The Resurgence Of Nationalist-Populist Movements In Central And Eastern European States And The European Union, Anastassiya Perevezentseva May 2018

The Resurgence Of Nationalist-Populist Movements In Central And Eastern European States And The European Union, Anastassiya Perevezentseva

Eckardt Scholars Projects

This paper examines the causes of the resurgence of populism and nationalism in status quo Central and Eastern Europe. It analyzes the case studies of Poland, Hungary, and Czech Republic in order to test the two explanations of this resurgence. The proposed explanations include effects of transition as the causes of the observed phenomenon, while the second one emphasizes the process of EU accession as the primary cause. The findings support that the loss of social welfare benefits during transition contribute to the success of populist parties. In addition, the unique political situation of CEECs that had allowed populist parties ...

Trump’S Presidency And Executive Encroachment Through Inaction, Cynthia Botello Jan 2018

Trump’S Presidency And Executive Encroachment Through Inaction, Cynthia Botello

Theses and Dissertations

Scholarly research on the executive usurpation of legislative power often focuses on Presidents and executive branch officials acting beyond their statutory authority through executive action. I believe it is likewise important, however, to address how Presidents have acted unconstitutionally through the under-enforcement of policies. In this paper, I investigate and analyze the encroachment on legislative power through executive refusal to defend, enforce, or implement the law, with specific focus on the presidency of Donald Trump. The Take-Care Clause is recognized as a guard against the suspension and dispensation of Congressional Acts by requiring the President to execute all constitutionally valid ...

The Pedagogical Needs Of Children And Adults Living In The Calais Jungle Refugee Camp: Existential Issues And Perspectives Of Volunteer Teachers And Workers, Theresa C. Bodon, Nancy K. Votteler

FIRE: Forum for International Research in Education

This study aimed at examining the pedagogical needs and challenges of children and young adults living in a refugee camp in France known as the Calais Jungle. Through the researchers’ observations and interviews with volunteer teachers and workers at the camp, insights into their perspectives shed light on the pedagogical needs of refugees. Also, utilizing Paulo Freire’s philosophical stance, this study provides a contextual approach to the educational practices and ideological viewpoints represented within unregulated refugee camp settings.

Environmental Freshwater Resources And Conflict: Case Studies From The Former Soviet Union, Thomas Conrad Scott Jan 2015

Environmental Freshwater Resources And Conflict: Case Studies From The Former Soviet Union, Thomas Conrad Scott

Theses and Dissertations

Natural resources have become a factor of interest in conflict. Unfortunately scholars and policymakers alike choose to focus on oil and natural gas, not freshwater, even when freshwater resources play a significant role in their conflict of interest. Utilizing a theoretical logic developed from Jane Dawson's "resource-identity" model of conflict, freshwater resources are understood to be fundamental factors in the causation of conflicts as well as in the strategy and tactics used within the conflict. Case studies from Central Asia, Georgia-Abkhazia, and Russian intervention demonstrate this in the Former Soviet Union.

Still Waters Run Deep: Community-Based Water Management As A Case For Ethnofederalism In Afghanistan, Joel Blaxland Jan 2014

Still Waters Run Deep: Community-Based Water Management As A Case For Ethnofederalism In Afghanistan, Joel Blaxland

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how, for more than four millennia, neighboring Afghan tribal communities have exercised highly decentralized, community-based freshwater management practices. I argue that these practices can act as both a model for how to structure Afghan polity at large as well as a global lesson in environmental resource management. The staying-power of these highly decentralized institutions is especially confounding for US policymakers because despite enduring nearly three decades of unrelenting violent conflict, these community-based freshwater management practices have remained a bulwark against "modern" western capitalist expansionism. These management practices are exceptionally resilient because they draw their strength from the ...
