Collective Begging At Its Best: Labor-Management Relations In South Dakota, Gary Aguiar Jan 2014

Collective Begging At Its Best: Labor-Management Relations In South Dakota, Gary Aguiar

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Public employee labor unions in South Dakota possess a feeble set of bargaining rights, so weak it should be considered “collective begging.” However, our recent contract contains significant victories despite decades of playing defense. What lessons can be learned from this experience that might help other similarly situated faculty unions? What does this case study teach us about the disparity of power, especially where labor has fewer legal and political tools than management? I apply DiGiovanni’s (2011) typology of “intangible influences” on collective bargaining to explain our success. As DiGiovanni predicts, history and timing played a large role in ...

The Tea Party Movement And The 2012 House Election, Andrew D. Mcnitt Jan 2014

The Tea Party Movement And The 2012 House Election, Andrew D. Mcnitt

Andrew D. McNitt

This article reviews the electoral fortunes of Tea Party candidates for the House of Representative in 2012. Tea Party and Tea Party endorsed candidates are similar to other Republican candidates. Although they have served in the House for a shorter period of time, they have approximately the same financial resources, prior political experience and reelection rate as other Republicans. Multivariate analysis finds that Tea Party membership and endorsement has no significant impact on electoral outcome when other factors (incumbency, running for an open seat, quality of opposing candidate, prior political experience, financial resources and Obama’s vote) are controlled for ...

Sexual And Political Affairs: Representation Of Women In American News Media, Melissa Beal Jan 2014

Sexual And Political Affairs: Representation Of Women In American News Media, Melissa Beal

Masters Theses

Explores representations in American news media of women who have been involved sexually with male politicians and women who are politicians through a critical rhetorical lens. Through the use of poststructural feminism, the term "mistress" is problematized. Attention is given to the news media's focus on women's bodies as sites of dangerous sexual temptations as well as the media's constant attention to women's physical features, which reduces women to objects. It is shown that similar coverage regarding bodies is not given to men. Also discusses the news media's frequent interrogation of women's minds. Explores ...

Anglo-American Relations Between The 1953 Coup And The 1956 Suez Crisis, Aaron F. Psujek Jan 2014

Anglo-American Relations Between The 1953 Coup And The 1956 Suez Crisis, Aaron F. Psujek

Masters Theses

The Cold War and global politics brought upheaval to the Middle East in the 1950s. The conflict between the United States and Soviet Union shaped the history of the region at the same time it brought war to Korea. Britain's relationship with the U.S., especially in the Middle Eastern theater, was shaped by the Cold War. British intelligence, political, and press members and agents used the tensions to bring the United States in to help them in the various crises that swept the Middle East in the 1950s. This strategy served to bring the two countries closer together ...
