Clements’ campaign for governor of Kentucky, providing brief data on the candidate and soliciting support; also letter, 30 October 1961, from Clements replying to the recipient’s telegram about a toll road groundbreaking ceremony in Leitchfield, Kentucky. Clements, who had earlier resigned as state highway commissioner and was not informed of the ceremony, nevertheless expresses satisfaction that he had initiated the project.

Withers to Pearl Sugg, Providence, Kentucky, with expressions of friendship after his appointment to the U.S. Senate to replace Vice President Alben Barkley; and a form letter of Harry Lee Waterfield, Clinton, Kentucky, seeking support in his 1967 campaign for Governor of Kentucky.

Includes abstracts of title in connection with grants of coal rights. Correspondence discusses an estate settlement, pending legislation amending certain city charters, family financial matters, and a candidate’s defeat in an 1884 primary election after two of three barrooms in the precinct were “thrown wide open” for his opponent.

Likely in reference to the “Eaton affair” or “Petticoat affair,” the letter complains of “abuse” of President Andrew Jackson and his cabinet by newspapers that are patronized “by the Clay & Adams party in this part of Kentucky”; specifically, the letter objects to characterizing the Administration’s replacement of some officeholders as “sin” or “anti-republican.”

Seeking reelection to Congress, Grey complains of lack of support from his own Whig Party and promises to help reconcile breaches among its members. He encloses a broadside advertising a Democratic Party meeting in Henderson County on 28 May as evidence of its organization and aim to carry the election.

The community was known as Horse Cave, but changed its name to Caverna in 1869 and later changed its name back to Horse Cave in 1880. Stray material was scanned where it was found in the minute book; blank pages were not scanned.
