The Doctrine Of The Rule Of Law In The Twentieth Century., Noel B. Reynolds, Dennis Jensen Dec 1984

The Doctrine Of The Rule Of Law In The Twentieth Century., Noel B. Reynolds, Dennis Jensen

Noel B Reynolds

The concept of rule of law has been recognized repeatedly in twentieth century political and philosophical discussion, but with a constantly shifting meaning. In this paper we document most of the serious contributions to thought about rule of law before 1985 as a background to further work on the topic.

George Orwell: Socialist Or Liberal? Big Brother And The Abuse Of Power, Noel B. Reynolds Jun 1984

George Orwell: Socialist Or Liberal? Big Brother And The Abuse Of Power, Noel B. Reynolds

Noel B Reynolds

For although he was too strongly independent in his thinking to accept the Marxist or socialist dogmas of his associates, because they did not seem to square with experience, and though he admired the tough resistance of English character and legal institutions to tyranny, Orwell never did tumble to the understanding of man and government which had shaped each over the centuries. Failing to see the constants in human nature as the key to the political problem, he looked around the world both as he perceived it and his literary fellows portrayed it, and concluded that power lust was the ...

The Political Theology Of Michael Novak: Democratic Capitalism Confronts Liberation Theology, Glenn Tremper Apr 1984

The Political Theology Of Michael Novak: Democratic Capitalism Confronts Liberation Theology, Glenn Tremper

Theology Undergraduate Theses

According to Novak, a large number of religious thinkers favor a socialist approach to economics. Novak reveals that he too once shared this bias. He has undertaken the project of defending democratic capitalism with the aim of explaining why his opinions concerning political economy have changed. Novak may liken himself to Plato’s Good Philosopher, having ascended out of the cave of political naivete and seen the light that democratic capitalism has to offer. And, like the Good Philosopher, he has returned to the arena of his prior misconception to demonstrate the illusory nature of the ideals of socialism. Novak ...

Nationalism And Integration, Allan Harold Moore Jan 1984

Nationalism And Integration, Allan Harold Moore

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The hypothesis of the paper is that nationalism and integration are compatible with each other, and only conflict when the integrationist tendencies in society become overbearing. To study the hypothesis to the fullest extent possible, we explored it in both intellectual and concrete terms. Chapter One looks at the literature on nationalism and concludes that it can be used in the integration processes of society. Chapter Two examines how nationalism is treated by the modern proponents of integration. The functionalist, neo-functionalist, federalist and pluralist schools of integration are explored in the chapter. Chapter Three examines the hypothesis in concrete terms ...

Computers, Cables, And Citizenship: On The Desirability Of Instant Direct Democracy, Richard Dagger Jan 1983

Computers, Cables, And Citizenship: On The Desirability Of Instant Direct Democracy, Richard Dagger

Political Science Faculty Publications

Mulford Sibley is not the sort of scholar who makes a career of elaborating variations on a theme. There are recurring themes in his work, however, and I want to sound two of them, participatory democracy and technology, in this essay. These themes may be joined in a number of ways, but here I shall take up only one - the possibility that advances in communications technology may actually promote democracy by extending and enhancing opportunities for political participation.

Political Action And Alignments In Organizations, Edward J. Lawler, Samuel B. Bacharach Jan 1983

Political Action And Alignments In Organizations, Edward J. Lawler, Samuel B. Bacharach

Articles and Chapters

[Excerpt] A political model of organizations implies an emphasis on action and alignments. Political action consists of the tactics actors use to deal with opposition and to maximize their influence. Political alignments refer to the network of coalitions within which action takes place at a particular time. Political action and political alignments are interrelated. Alignments emerge from action, action modifies existing alignments, and the prevailing alignments constrain and channel political action. The importance of action suggests that a political model be grounded in social-action theory (Weber, 1947; Parsons, 1937; and Schutz, 1967), since political action can best be construed as ...

The Challenge Of Socialist Thought, Noel B. Reynolds Sep 1982

The Challenge Of Socialist Thought, Noel B. Reynolds

Noel B Reynolds

This presentation points to socialists’ mistaken assumptions of a malleable and perfectible human nature as an insuperable reason for the inevitable failure of socialist systems. It also points to socialist and liberal dependence on declarations of human rights as ineffective protections for human freedom—protections which can only be maintained in constitutionalist systems with deeper structural safeguards against tyranny

Some Problems With Marx's Theory Of Capitalist Penetration Into Agriculture: The Case Of Ireland, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 1981

Some Problems With Marx's Theory Of Capitalist Penetration Into Agriculture: The Case Of Ireland, Ellen Hazelkorn

Articles

Marx and Engels's writings on Ireland are usually associated with their positive support for Irish nationalism. This article seeks to examine the extent and depth of their knowledge of Ireland, politically and economically, by focusing attention on Marx's analysis of post-famine agricultural readjustment. Comparing the latter's comments in Capitaland elsewhere with actual developments, it is suggested that Marx and Engels's understanding was less than accurate. The source of their misinterpretation lies principally with their inadequate analysis of tenants, agrarian capitalism, and land fever
