Petroleum As A Political Weapon In International Affairs: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Momodou Abdou Rahman Jallow Jan 1978

Petroleum As A Political Weapon In International Affairs: The Case Of Saudi Arabia, Momodou Abdou Rahman Jallow

Masters Theses

This study seeks to analyze the role of oil in Saudi Arabia's foreign policy. In 1973 Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations successfully used their oil resources to apply pressure on the United States of America to modify her strong support of the State of Israel. Saudi Arabia played a significant role in the 1973 oil embargo. This thesis will examine Saudi Arabia's role in the 1973-74 Arab oil embargo, and what prompted her participation, considering the fact that she is less radical than most of her Arab neighbors. The 1973 oil embargo was more successful than for ...

World Food Supply And Demand: How The Two Can Be Linked, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1978

World Food Supply And Demand: How The Two Can Be Linked, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

It is a privilege and honor for me to make the concluding address of this excellent symposium on world agricultural trade. Ed Harshbarger and his colleagues at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City are certainly to be complimented for assembling such a distinguished group of participants, as well as a most impressive audience. Hopefully, the discussions of the past two days will stimulate and enhance world agricultural trade over the next two decades or more.

Industrial Democracy: An Examination Of Hs Forms And Effects In Selected Countries, Myra Trask Apr 1977

Industrial Democracy: An Examination Of Hs Forms And Effects In Selected Countries, Myra Trask

Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This paper examines, through secondary research, the concept of industrial democracy and how it has been applied in several different counties. A brief explanation of industrial democracy introduces the paper, followed by an examination of its application in selected countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, South American and the United States. Most of the successful experiments have occurred in Europe, and therefore a large portion of the paper is dedicated to studies of European examples. In each of these an historical view has been presented, follower by a description of the current status of the concept and some specific cases where ...

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1977

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

It is a pleasure for me to speak this morning to this dynamic group of young farm families. Those of .us who were actively involved in farming a few years back are continually amazed at the talent that has come along" to succeed us. Farming has indeed changed more than we realize. That is not a new discovery, for thousands of articles have been written about the technological revolution in agriculture. But relatively little attention has been given to the change in farm families themselves. without doubt, the quality level of young farmers and their wives - whether it be measured ...

Food And Foreign Affairs: The Role Of Agricultural Trade Policy In International Commerce And Domestic Relations, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1977

Food And Foreign Affairs: The Role Of Agricultural Trade Policy In International Commerce And Domestic Relations, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

Until that now famous series of Russian grain sales took place in 1972 agricultural policy in the United States had begun to lose its sex appeal! It had its challenges in the drought and depression years of the '30s, and again during World War II, but in both those cases the concern was whether we could produce enough for our needs. In the earlier of those decades, we had an additional preoccupation with the economic survival of our farming communities. Farm families had to.be strong in every sense of the word to live through the '30s.

Theoretical Differences In Kissinger And Schlesinger's Models Of The International System, Wayne Alan Schroeder Nov 1976

Theoretical Differences In Kissinger And Schlesinger's Models Of The International System, Wayne Alan Schroeder

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a study of national security decision making in the Ford Administration. The subject for study is the Kissinger- Schlesinger controversy in the Ford Administration. The thesis will attempt to prove that the differences that emerged over issues of national policy were due to deep theoretical disagreements as to the nature of the international system, the utility of power in the nuclear age and the means by which to preserve detente.

An examination of the substantive policy differences will be preceded by an examination of the conceptual disagreements between the Secretaries on topics that are fundamental to any ...

The Turkish Aid Ban: Review And Assessment, A. A. Fatouros Jan 1976

The Turkish Aid Ban: Review And Assessment, A. A. Fatouros

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In this article, A.A. Fatouros places the U.S. aid-embargo to Turkey in the context of jurisdiction (executive vs. legislative powers) rather than in the context of ideological differences between the two camps. If, as the writer claims, the final concessions to the executive branch by Congress had been predictable, could we conclude that the executive branch is on the road to recovery? And if that is the case, is the Congressional ratification of the recent agreement between Kissinger and Turkey a foregone conclusion? There is of course such a possibility. To avert it, the opponents of the aid ...

Statement Of Ambassador Clayton K. Yeutter Representative Of The United States To The Thirty-Second Session Of The Contracting Parties To The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade, November 22/23, 1976 Geneva, Switzerland, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

Mr. Chairman: IT IS AN HONOR FOR ME TO REPRESENT THE UNITED STATES AT THIS THIRTY-SECOND SESSION OF THE GATT CONTRACTING PARTIES. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS MEETING EXTENDS WELL BEYOND THE SPECIFIC TRADE ISSUES ON THE AGENDA BEFORE US. IT REPRESENTS A CONTINUING EFFORT TO RESOLVE COMMON ECONOMIC PROBLEMS THROUGH INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION. THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS EFFORT SHOULD NOT BE UNDERESTIMATED. WE ALL SHARE A FUNDAMENTAL SELF-INTEREST IN PRESERVING; IN THE FACE OF MAJOR ECONOMIC DIFFICULTIES; AN OPEN TRADING SYSTEM BASED ON COOPERATION UNDER AGREED INTERNATIONAL RULES.

From Stockholm To Nairobi To Caracas: Route Toward A New International Law?, Lynton K. Caldwell Oct 1974

From Stockholm To Nairobi To Caracas: Route Toward A New International Law?, Lynton K. Caldwell

IUSTITIA

In the future, as in the past, one function of international law will be to formalize and clarify procedures to deal with emergent problems. The international environmental developments noted in this paper, e.g. global monitoring, supervision of the seabed, protection of endangered species, resource allocation, and many others, will require institutional arrangements differing from those with which nations have had experience. Innovation in legal principles and procedures is an almost certain consequence of such developments. Innovations in principle have been among the more obvious outputs of the international environmental conferences and programs since 1968. As these principles are translated ...

Communist Chinese Attitudes Toward United Nations Membership 1945-1971 An Essay, Victoria E. Docauer Oct 1974

Communist Chinese Attitudes Toward United Nations Membership 1945-1971 An Essay, Victoria E. Docauer

IUSTITIA

Let us here examine the question of Communist Chinese representation in the United Nations in the context of a broader question: the attitude of Communist China toward international law. Was it only United States interference which kept Communist China out of the United Nations? What is the position of Communist China in regard to international law? Has the People's Republic been the lawless nation that it is sometimes described to be? In an attempt to provide questions, one must examine those arguments which emphasize the lawlessness of Communist China and seek to determine the attitude of the Communist Chinese ...

China's Use Of International Law In Border Disputes: The Cases Of India And The Soviet Union, Larry R. Schreiter Oct 1974

China's Use Of International Law In Border Disputes: The Cases Of India And The Soviet Union, Larry R. Schreiter

IUSTITIA

Despite American "containment" in the fifties and sixties, China was nevertheless a major actor on the international scene. The loci of China's practice of international politics ranged from the Bandung Conference to its ideological foray into European politics following the Hungarian rebellion in 1956. Along with this activism in the international environment, China turned her attention in the late fifties to the question of gaining mutual agreements with her neighbors on the delineation and regulation of the boundaries. This concern brought about some marked changes in bilateral foreign policy, and required dealings of both an ideological as well as ...
