Nato Battlefield Strategy For The Conventional Defense Of Central Europe, Patrick Joseph Geary

Master's Theses

Although we live in a time in which strategies using nuclear weapons dominate the attention of most defense analysts, there are reasons why more attention should be paid to conventional defense strategy. This thesis explores NATO's strategy for defending Central Europe with conventional battlefield weapons. The discussion centers on the military and political complexities involved in the strategy of Forward Defense. Included also is a brief history of NATO, highlighting the political and military events that helped shape today's conventional defense arrangements. Particular emphasis is placed on illustrating the methods and factors involved in the implementation of Forward ...

The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas

Theses and Major Papers

The ultimate goal of the U.S. Maritime Strategy is to project power into all the oceans of the world. By projecting power over this vast a geographic area, the U.S. is able to provide a deterrent force that will inhibit the development of a significant hostile military action, anywhere in the world. The ability to support this global peacekeeping force hinges on the capability of the U.S. to provide a strong logistic support organization. From a waterborne perspective, the Indian Ocean is the one geographic area of the world that presents the greatest logistic challenge. The U ...

Business Divestment In South Africa: In Who’S Best Interest?, Paul Lansing, Sarosh Kuruvilla Jan 1987

Business Divestment In South Africa: In Who’S Best Interest?, Paul Lansing, Sarosh Kuruvilla

Articles and Chapters

In recent years, there has been considerable pressure on corporations doing business in South Africa to divest and withdraw from that country. While this moral view espouses withdrawal, this article seeks to provide insight into the practical consequences of divestment. One of the questions addressed is how does foreign divestment affect Black South Africans, those who are supposed to benefit from a divestment policy.

Ambassador Clayton Yeutter United States Trade Representative Forty-Third Session Of The Gatt Contracting Parties Geneva, Switzerland December 1, 1987, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

I would like to speak to you this morning about the future of the world trading system. It seems appropriate, on the GATT's 40th birthday, to recognize its past achievements while also looking forward to its future-challenges. We must together develop a vision of the GATT that will serve the needs of the twenty-first century. Forty years ago, the legacy of a great depression and a world war was high import duties and restrictive quotas. World trade had shriveled. Recognizing this sorry state of affairs, concerned countries came together to establish a mechanism for reducing trade barriers and for ...

Ambassador Clayton Yeutter United States Trade Representative April 20, 1987 The Shimoda Conference Oiso, Japan, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers

I am grateful to the Shimoda Conference for inviting me to address the issue of U.S.-Japanese trade. This is an important event, coming at a time when trade between our two countries is playing a more significant role in our overall relations than ever before. In some ways , individual trade issues are threatening to overshadow our long relationship as friends and allies. This must not be allowed to happen. Japan and the united States have too much at stake to let transitory problems come between us. We are the world's two largest free economies. We work together ...

American Foreign Policy : The Utility Of Force As An Influence, Bargaining, Or Coercive Force In The Caribbean Basin, Susan M. Marandas Jan 1987

American Foreign Policy : The Utility Of Force As An Influence, Bargaining, Or Coercive Force In The Caribbean Basin, Susan M. Marandas

Dissertations and Theses

Throughout history states have pursued both cooperative and power-oriented strategies. Moralists and realists have long questioned the appropriateness of using force to gain state objectives. Recent analysts have stressed that states have a moral duty to manage international uncertainty in the best interests of their citizens. While this might involve utilizing both power-seeking and order-seeking strategies, it has been suggested that pursuing order-seeking strategies could help alleviate international uncertainty.

An historical survey, as well as recent case studies in Grenada and Nicaragua, indicate that the United States often has relied upon military strategies in the Caribbean Basin. The United States ...

Hugo Grotius And The Liberal Tradition, Karen Diane Csajko Jan 1987

Hugo Grotius And The Liberal Tradition, Karen Diane Csajko

Dissertations and Theses

One approach in contemporary international relations theory is the moralist position. Most moralists argue that obligations which an individual has toward the state and toward persons qua fellow citizens should not override the obligations which every individual has toward other persons qua members of humanity. Essential to a moralist approach is the idea that every individual shares some feature, such as rights, which is universal to all men and incontrovertible by any body. Many moralists base their theory upon the thought of Hugo Grotius, equating Grotius ' s thought with their own moralist approach.

This thesis argues that Grotius does not ...
