Democratic Opposition Parties And Democratic Outcomes In Hybrid Regimes, Jeremy M. Ladd Aug 2012

Democratic Opposition Parties And Democratic Outcomes In Hybrid Regimes, Jeremy M. Ladd

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Leading up to and following the end of the Cold War a new wave of democratisation commenced in Sub-Saharan Africa and around the world which, in both cases, has been characterized by “blocked transitions,” the “rise of competitive authoritarianism,” and the proliferation of hybrid regimes. This thesis is primarily concerned with “democratic” outcomes within these hybrid regimes. Excluding data from prior to the end of the Cold War in global investigations of democracy, this thesis utilizes a temporally truncated dataset to reanalyse dominant theories of democratisation both at the global and regional (Sub-Saharan Africa) level, finding that when contaminating effects ...

A Symbiosis Of Constitutional Development And The Federal Imperative In Nigeria, David O. Moveh Dr Jul 2012

A Symbiosis Of Constitutional Development And The Federal Imperative In Nigeria, David O. Moveh Dr

David O Moveh PhD.

The main thrust of Nigeria’s constitutional development history has been geared towards promoting a viable federal system of government for the country. Indeed, except for the Hugh Clifford’s constitution of 1922, all other constitutions operated in Nigeria in one way or the other; either proposed; or promoted a federal system of government for the country. Ironically, the federal system engendered by successive Nigerian constitutions unwittingly complicates the institutionalization of a viable constitutional framework for the country; this is evidenced in the agitations for resource control and the so called return to “true federalism”, the attempt to impose religious ...

Responding To Crisis: A Comparative Look At South Africa’S And The U.S. Government’S Policies Towards Zimbabwe, Andrew Eldredge Jul 2012

Responding To Crisis: A Comparative Look At South Africa’S And The U.S. Government’S Policies Towards Zimbabwe, Andrew Eldredge

Colgate Academic Review

Why have South Africa and the U.S. adopted and maintained different foreign policy stances towards the crisis in Zimbabwe? This question is of particular importance due to the political, economic, and humanitarian implications of the Zimbabwean situation since 2000, the regional impact of the crisis, and the recent potential for positive developments under the newly established Zimbabwean unity government. Previous studies predominately concentrate on analyzing either the western or the regional approach towards Zimbabwe to the detriment of gaining a complete understanding of why these approaches have differed. This study builds upon the existing literature by employing a comparative ...

Thatcher And The British Election Of 1979: Taxes, Nationalization, And Unions Run Amok, Matthew Greeson Jul 2012

Thatcher And The British Election Of 1979: Taxes, Nationalization, And Unions Run Amok, Matthew Greeson

Colgate Academic Review

The arguments presented in this paper, and the 1979 parliamentary elections in general, are more relevant than ever for Americans in the wake of the 2008 election. With dismal economic news mounting and a massive shift in the electoral map, Margaret Thatcher’s electoral strategy and the keys to her successes provide important lessons for both parties. In particular, the Republican Party is in need of a coherent message and fresh electoral successes. Some have argued that a return to truly conservative ideals is what that party needs, while others say the party must move to the center and seek ...

“We’Re Off To Replace The Wizard”: Lessons From A Collaborative Group Project Assignment, Miguel Centellas, Gregory J. Love Jul 2012

“We’Re Off To Replace The Wizard”: Lessons From A Collaborative Group Project Assignment, Miguel Centellas, Gregory J. Love

Miguel Centellas

This article examines the effectiveness of a collaborative group learning project for teaching a core competency in comparative politics: constitutional structures. We use a quasi-experimental design and propensity score matching to assess the value of a consti- tutional writing group project and presentation. The results provide strong evidence that these learning tools are highly valuable for teaching abstract concepts. Students who par- ticipated in the project scored significantly higher on a short series of questions in final exams given several weeks after the completion of the group project. Somewhat paradox- ically, the project increased competency but did not affect student ...

A Story Of Four Revolutions: Mechanisms Of Change In India, Aseema Sinha Jul 2012

A Story Of Four Revolutions: Mechanisms Of Change In India, Aseema Sinha

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Sumit Ganguly and Rahul Mukherji’s India Since 1980 presents a bold and ambitious argument about change across and within India. Its unique contribution lies in its description of four distinct revolutions: social-political, economic, foreign policy, and religious. While many recent books have noted changes in India’s economy and foreign policy, India Since 1980 will be known for its juxtaposition of four different themes in one short, pithy volume. Even if one may disagree with the authors’ choice of the four dimensions of change, the book’s dominant message is that India is changing across a whole range of ...

Hungary's Illiberal Turn: Can Outsiders Help?, Cas Mudde, Erin K. Jenne Jun 2012

Hungary's Illiberal Turn: Can Outsiders Help?, Cas Mudde, Erin K. Jenne

Cas Mudde

Since the conservative FIDESZ won the 2010 Hungarian elections, the new government under Premier Victor Orban has begun an unprecedented reform of the country's political system, strongly undermining the fundamentals of liberal democracy. With the opposition parties discredited, the only hope is in a slowly developing civil society. This article looks at what the international community (in particular the EU) can do to pressure the Hungarian government to respect liberal democracy and to strengthen the democratic opposition.

La Automatización Del Voto. Entre El Miedo Y La Pasión: Un Análisis De Cuatro Casos Europeos, (Autor) Letizia Caporusso, (Traductor) Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Technical Relevance And Social Opposition To E-Voting, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Jun 2012

Technical Relevance And Social Opposition To E-Voting, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

This paper makes an assessment of the technical and social motivations that drive some governments to promote and implement e-voting mechanisms. Success stories mentioned, especially those in Latin America, and contrasted with those cases where e-voting implementation has failed, as has happened in some European countries. Finally, the relationship between new technologies that promote e-voting and the nature of the elections as a part of democracy is analyzed. It could be argued that voting is not solely a technical exercise, it is an element that merges different political and social elements that e-voting promoters should not ignore.

Política Comparada, Estado Y Democracia En La Teoría De Stein Rokkan, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Jun 2012

Política Comparada, Estado Y Democracia En La Teoría De Stein Rokkan, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Developing A Georgia Policy Database: A Research Proposal, Paul E. Rutledge Jun 2012

Developing A Georgia Policy Database: A Research Proposal, Paul E. Rutledge

Georgia Journal of Public Policy

Scholars of state and local politics have long faced the problem of data availability. The crux of the problem is consistent and reliable measures that are amenable analysis over time or across states. The problem with data on the state or local level is one of information retrieval. Such tasks are especially laborious, and are necessarily focused on a small part of a much broader system of policy dynamics. The lack of a systematic framework for data collection or analysis makes projects that focus on a time span of longer than a few years or more than a handful of ...

Spring 2012 Georgia Journal Of Public Policy - Introduction, Dr. Richard N. Engstrom

Georgia Journal of Public Policy

This is the second volume of the annual Georgia Journal of Public Policy, and as the editor I would like to use these introductory comments to discuss three things. First, I am happy to report on how the journal’s first issue performed in terms of readership. Second, I will introduce a new section of the journal that features undergraduate student research on policy in Georgia. Finally, I will discuss future plans for the journal.

Zenonas Tziarras

Pertinencia Técnica Y Oposición Social Al Voto Electrónico, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Jun 2012

Pertinencia Técnica Y Oposición Social Al Voto Electrónico, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Modelos De Gestión Electoral En América Latina En Perspectiva Comparada, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Jun 2012

Modelos De Gestión Electoral En América Latina En Perspectiva Comparada, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

“This Is What Democracy Looks Like”: Is Representation Under Siege?, Jose Pedro Zuquete May 2012

“This Is What Democracy Looks Like”: Is Representation Under Siege?, Jose Pedro Zuquete

Jose Pedro Zuquete

Since the end of the 20th century loud calls for reinstating the rule of the people in liberal democracies have been heard, particularly in but not limited to alter-globalization circles devoted to creating another world. This trend has been strengthened in the passage to the 21st century and this article traces the influences behind it, as well as the motivations and ways in which representative democracy is rejected by activists in favor of a new system that fulfills what is perceived as the original promise of democracy to bring power to all the people. The article concludes with a discussion ...

When Is It Our Time?: An Event History Model Of Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Rights Policy Adoption, Megan E. Osterbur May 2012

When Is It Our Time?: An Event History Model Of Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Rights Policy Adoption, Megan E. Osterbur

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Gays and lesbians have long struggled for their rights as citizens, yet only recently has their struggle been truly politicized in a way that fosters mobilization. When and why social movements coalesce despite the many obstacles to collective action are fundamental questions in comparative politics. While examining social movements is worthwhile, it is important to examine not only when and why a social movement forms, but also when and why a social movement is successful. This dissertation tackles the latter of these objectives, focusing on when and why social movements have success in terms of their duration from the time ...
