The Spouse In The House: What Explains The Marriage Gap In Canada?, J. Matthew Wilson, Michael Lusztig Dec 2004

The Spouse In The House: What Explains The Marriage Gap In Canada?, J. Matthew Wilson, Michael Lusztig

Political Science Research

A literature has emerged in American voting studies noting a “marriage gap”—the propensity for married voters to support the Republican party. Using Canadian Election Study data, we establish the existence of a significant marriage gap in Canada. We also seek to determine if the marriage gap is driven by socio-demographic factors or attitudinal ones. We find that while socio-demographic factors contribute to the marriage gap, they explain relatively little variance. In probing the attitudinal basis of the marriage gap further, we find that married Canadians differ from the unwed very strongly on issues of moral traditionalism, but much less ...

The Genius Of The Nation Versus The Gene-Tech Of The Nation: Science, Identity, And Gmo Debates In Hungary, Krista Harper Oct 2004

The Genius Of The Nation Versus The Gene-Tech Of The Nation: Science, Identity, And Gmo Debates In Hungary, Krista Harper

Anthropology Department Faculty Publication Series

Introduction In the late 1990s, Hungarian politicians, environmentalists, and agricultural lobbyists weighed the pros and cons of allowing genetically modified (GM) food and seeds to enter the Hungarian market. Starting around 1994, a small group of Hungarian environmentalists began researching GM issues. Initially, they feared that as a post-socialist country seeking foreign investment, Hungary would become prey to multinational corporations seeking an ‘emerging market’ with a lax regulatory environment. The terms of the debate were reframed over time, notably following 1998, when a number of European Union member states banned the imports of GM foods and when Hungarian expatriate geneticist ...

La Educación Superior Transnacional En México: El Caso Sylvan-Universidad Del Valle De México, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

This paper discusses the impact of transnationalisation on Mexican higher education system in four steps: First, it examines the Mexican government position about the global international trade. Second, it exposes the general Mexican position about the educative transnationalisation. Third, it refers the Mexican legal frame about direct foreign investment in education. Fourth, it displays data about the volume of direct foreign investment in the Mexican educative sector. Finally, the attention turns to a specific case of transnationalisation: the presence of a partnership between Sylvan Learning Systems and the University of the Valley of Mexico, private institution that offers education of ...

Community Determinants Of Volunteer Participation: The Case Of Japan, Mary Alice Haddad Sep 2004

Community Determinants Of Volunteer Participation: The Case Of Japan, Mary Alice Haddad

Division II Faculty Publications

Why are some communities more civically engaged than others? Why do some communities provide services with volunteer labor whereas others rely primarily on government provision? When communities provide both volunteer and paid labor for the same service, how do they motivate and organize those volunteers? This article addresses these questions through quantitative tests of prevailing explanations for levels of civic engagement (e.g., education, TV viewing, urbanization) and qualitative analyses of case studies of three medium-sized cities in Japan, focusing particularly on the service areas of firefighting and elder care. The statistical analyses demonstrate that current explanations that rely on ...

Exportkreditagenturen Und Erneuerbare Energien: Chancen Und Herausforderungen, Marcus Schaper Jul 2004

Exportkreditagenturen Und Erneuerbare Energien: Chancen Und Herausforderungen, Marcus Schaper

Marcus Schaper

Satellite Televisions In Lebanon: Agents Of Change Or Reinforcing The Status Quo?, Yara Youssef May 2004

Satellite Televisions In Lebanon: Agents Of Change Or Reinforcing The Status Quo?, Yara Youssef

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a noted interest in the new technologies of the nineties, those that have expanded the realm of traditional mass media and the traditional means of communication that people were previously used to. With the start of globalization and the world becoming what some have called “global village,” the act of distributing information to the four comers of the world has become less complicated than it used to be, and boundaries are seen as constantly being eroded by the new pressures of modernization and liberalization. The internet and satellite televisions increased in importance in this realm, and so ...

A Marcha, O Terço E O Livro: Catolicismo Conservador E Ação Política Na Conjuntura Do Golpe De 1964, Adriano Codato, Marcus Roberto De Oliveira

Adriano Codato

This essay discusses the political activity of the conservative groups in São Paulo and Paraná who supported the military coup of March 31, 1964. We analyze the "March of Families with God for Freedom" and conclude that, in the case of the march that was held in Curitiba (re-named "March for Educational Freedom"), priority was given to issues of "individual freedom", relegating traditional Christian values to a secondary concern. The issue illustrates the complexity of the ideological conjuncture that preceded the 1964 coup, the critical character of the initiatives taken by Goulart's government in carrying out its agenda of ...

O Golpe De 1964 E O Regime De 1968: Aspectos Conjunturais E Variáveis Históricas, Adriano Codato

Adriano Codato

This paper analyses Brazil s political evolution during a specific moment. It discusses the processes of conversion of the post-1964 authoritarian regime to the post-1968 regime of military dictatorship. The article s principal aim is to examine the reasons for the issuing of Institutional Act 5, which meant the victory of the military s extreme right-wing and therefore the political defeat of opposition forces. The central issue informing the analysis is the question of whether it is possible to find an explanatory variable for the interpretation of this historical process that could account for the supremacy of the grupo palaciano ...

International Environmental Justice: Building The Natural Assets Of The World’S Poor, Krista Harper, S. Ravi Rajan Jan 2004

International Environmental Justice: Building The Natural Assets Of The World’S Poor, Krista Harper, S. Ravi Rajan

Anthropology Department Faculty Publication Series

In recent years, vibrant social movements have emerged across the world to fight for environmental justice –- for more equitable access to natural resources and environmental quality, including clean air and water. In seeking to build community rights to natural assets, these initiatives seek to advance simultaneously the goals of environmental protection and poverty reduction. This paper sketches the contours of struggles for environmental justice within and among countries, and illustrates with examples primarily drawn from countries of the global South and the former Soviet bloc.

Los Movimientos Sociales En Un Mundo Globalizado: ¿Alguna Novedad?, Salvador Marti I Puig Jan 2004

Los Movimientos Sociales En Un Mundo Globalizado: ¿Alguna Novedad?, Salvador Marti I Puig

Salvador Marti i Puig

Export Credit Agencies And Climate Change: What Can They Do About It?, Marcus Schaper Jan 2004

Export Credit Agencies And Climate Change: What Can They Do About It?, Marcus Schaper

Marcus Schaper

Among the chief contributors to the anthropogenic causes of global climate change are carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels. Though the sources of these emissions are clearly identified, global carbon dioxide output from energy generation is still on the rise. Many industrialized countries have achieved a slow down in the increase of their emissions or even a reduction. However, emissions in developing countries are on the rise. A key challenge is to create incentives to turn around the trend of ever increasing emissions in the countries that are not obliged to reductions under the Kyoto protocol ...

Health As Foreign Policy: A U.S.-German Dialogue On Governance And Global Health., Marcus Schaper Jan 2004

Health As Foreign Policy: A U.S.-German Dialogue On Governance And Global Health., Marcus Schaper

Marcus Schaper

Health has become an issue with significant implications for economies, trade, and security in today’s globalized world. Epidemics like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) carry an impact far beyond the epicenters of the disease. The spread of HIV-AIDS leads to fundamental changes in social cohesion and state structures with far reaching international consequences. Bioterrorism with its potential for rapid pandemic poses a threat to many countries of the world. In a globalized world, health has developed into an issue of soft power. It has become part of deliberations on foreign policy and of the development of civil society and ...

Microfinance And Third World Development: A Critical Analysis, Elahi Khandakar, Constantine P. Danopoulos Jan 2004

Microfinance And Third World Development: A Critical Analysis, Elahi Khandakar, Constantine P. Danopoulos

Faculty Publications

Microfinance is emerging as an integral part of the new development paradigm, described by the phrase "participation and development. "Although the idea has become quite popular among donor agencies, development practitioners, and academicians, theoretical premises on which this idea is founded seem entirely unexamined. Accordingly, this article investigates the academic merits, as well as potential consequences, of this popular poverty alleviating model from the supply-side perspective and asks a provocative question: Do the microfinance ventures have features which suggest that the establishment of this new finance industry in the Third World countries might further complicate their pervasive poverty problems? The ...

Economic Measurements And Quality Of Life In Mexico, Constantine P. Danopoulos Jan 2004

Economic Measurements And Quality Of Life In Mexico, Constantine P. Danopoulos

Faculty Publications

Using the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), the article seeks to evaluate the quality of life in modern Mexico. The GPI employs the same indicators used to arrive at per capita GDP, but adds positive and negative monetary and non-monetary actors that affect people's lives. Monetary factors include income distribution, increased health care cost due to air and water pollution, and loss of wetlands. Non-monetary factors involve parenting, time spent in highways, loss of leisure time, the cost of volunteer work, and other social costs. If one takes these into account, the purchasing power and quality of life of Mexican ...
