State borders on maps do not always correspond with how they exist in actuality. Regionalism and ethnonationalism complicate political and territorial dynamics within a state. In some cases, it appears that the federal arrangements of certain subnational territories within a larger state can threaten national stability. Some states have attempted to ease ethnic tension by adopting power-sharing policies. Consociationalism, in which political arrangements are designed to encourage inclusiveness and cooperation, has been touted as one approach to safeguarding stable democracy in multiethnic states.
