Four Dimensions Of Student Leadership: What Predicts Students' Attitudes Toward Leadership Developrnent?, John Shertzer, Vernon Wall, Alisa Frandsen, Yan Guo, Donald F. Whalen, Mack C. Shelley Ii

Political Science Publications

Multiple regression was performed on four dependent variables derived from the results of a student survey measuring attitudes about student leadership: (a) leadership is important to the student, (b) the student considers himself or herself to be a leader, (c) leadership will be important to the student after college, and (d) leaders need to be able to work in teams or groups. Each of 10 independent variables was a significant predictor of one or more dependent variables.

Validation Of The Caregiving At Life’S End Questionnaire, Jennifer R. Salmon, Jung Kwak, Kimberly D. Acquaviva, Kathleen A. Egan, Katherine E. Brandt May 2005

Validation Of The Caregiving At Life’S End Questionnaire, Jennifer R. Salmon, Jung Kwak, Kimberly D. Acquaviva, Kathleen A. Egan, Katherine E. Brandt

Kimberly D. Acquaviva, PhD, MSW

The researchers in this study developed and validated a questionnaire to measure the needs of end-of-life (EOL) caregivers. The model is used to facilitate meaningful and supportive experiences for both the patient and caregiver. The questionnaire was developed using existing scales of meaning, self acceptance, burden, and gain as well as new scales of caregiver comfort, importance of caregiving tasks, and caregiver closure. The sample included 34 current and 17 bereaved caregivers affiliated with The Hospice Institute of the Florida Suncoast. The scales performed well in terms of concurrent validity, internal consistency, and reliability.

Simple Reinforcement Learning Agents: Pareto Beats Nash In An Algorithmic Game Theory Study, Steven. O. Kimbrough, Ming Lu Mar 2005

Simple Reinforcement Learning Agents: Pareto Beats Nash In An Algorithmic Game Theory Study, Steven. O. Kimbrough, Ming Lu

Operations, Information and Decisions Papers

Repeated play in games by simple adaptive agents is investigated. The agents use Q-learning, a special form of reinforcement learning, to direct learning of behavioral strategies in a number of 2×2 games. The agents are able effectively to maximize the total wealth extracted. This often leads to Pareto optimal outcomes. When the rewards signals are sufficiently clear, Pareto optimal outcomes will largely be achieved. The effect can select Pareto outcomes that are not Nash equilibria and it can select Pareto optimal outcomes among Nash equilibria.

Economic Contributions Of Atv-Related Activity In Maine, Jonathan Rubin, Charles Morrris Mar 2005

Economic Contributions Of Atv-Related Activity In Maine, Jonathan Rubin, Charles Morrris

Economic Development

Riding ATVs has become a highly visible recreational activity in Maine. During the 2003/2004 season from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2004 there were 59,057 ATVs registered in Maine to 45,561 separate households in Maine and from outside of Maine. During 2004, the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at the University of Maine in conjunction with the Maine Department of Conservation conducted a study to determine the total contribution to Maine’s economy that results from the spending related directly to the purchase and use of ATVs in Maine. We also examined the environmental and economic ...

Transformative Aspects Of Caregiving At Life's End, Jennifer Salmon, Jung Kwak, Kimberly D. Acquaviva, Katherine Brandt, Kathleen Egan Feb 2005

Transformative Aspects Of Caregiving At Life's End, Jennifer Salmon, Jung Kwak, Kimberly D. Acquaviva, Katherine Brandt, Kathleen Egan

Kimberly D. Acquaviva, PhD, MSW

We do not know to what extent the needs of caregivers involved with patients at the end of life are being met by care providers and whether caregiving at life’s end can be a positive experience. We used the Hospice Experience Model of Care as a framework for understanding the effect of transformative tasks on caregiving at life’s end. We compared current and bereaved caregivers and then, holding background characteristics constant, tested the independent effects of three transformative mediators: self-acceptance, meaning, and closure, as well as comfort with caregiving on several stressors when explaining differences in caregiver burden ...

Statistical Analysis Of A Telephone Call Center, Lawrence D. Brown, Noah Gans, Avishai Mandelbaum, Anat Sakov, Haipeng Shen, Sergey Zeltyn, Linda Zhao Jan 2005

Statistical Analysis Of A Telephone Call Center, Lawrence D. Brown, Noah Gans, Avishai Mandelbaum, Anat Sakov, Haipeng Shen, Sergey Zeltyn, Linda Zhao

Operations, Information and Decisions Papers

A call center is a service network in which agents provide telephone-based services. Customers who seek these services are delayed in tele-queues. This article summarizes an analysis of a unique record of call center operations. The data comprise a complete operational history of a small banking call center, call by call, over a full year. Taking the perspective of queueing theory, we decompose the service process into three fundamental components: arrivals, customer patience, and service durations. Each component involves different basic mathematical structures and requires a different style of statistical analysis. Some of the key empirical results are sketched, along ...

Francis Lieber: Transatlantic Cultural Missionary, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lieber remained consistent in his commitment to institutional liberty. He had no notion of a distinction that would later be made between property rights and human rights. He consistently encouraged economic free enterprise in his teaching and writings. Even the rise and fall of nations he regarded as simply part of a much larger picture. National institutions permit the encouragement of commerce and interdependence among nations. This, in turn, puts absolutism on the defensive. Growing interdependence permits the principle of institutional liberty to operate on a global scale as well as locally. It is this third characteristic of the modern ...
