Funded by PCAT to design and conduct an evaluation of a brief intervention for all parents of newborns delivered in 8 area hospitals over a 16 month period (approximately 9,000 parents). This intervention focuses on the dangers of shaking babies, and alternative methods for handling parent stress and frustration. Awarded a Year 2 contract based on Year 1 performance.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the possibility that mothers' and fathers' support are differentially moderated by personality-informed latent classes in predicting youth social initiative, therefore making contingent the previously detected pattern of fathers' support being more impactful than mothers' support with regard to this outcome. To test this, we conducted mixture model regression analyses (separately for boys and girls). Professional Preparation Systems For Parenting Educators: Identification, Perceived Value, And Demand For A National Credential., Heidi Stolz, T Henke, D Brandon, J Sams

The study reported here examined professional preparation systems (PPS) for parenting educators via an online survey of 324 Extension Specialists and members of the National Parenting Education Network (NPEN) and Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) listservs. Eighty-one PPS of six general types were identified. Curriculum-specific training and university degrees were perceived as contributing more to parenting educator knowledge and skills than to professional identity, but the reverse was true for state-based credentials/certificates, state-based licenses, and a national parenting education credential. Evaluating “Parent Project:” A Multi-Site Inquiry, Heidi Stolz, L Vargas, L Clifford, H Gaedt, C Garcia

This study evaluates Parent Project®, a parent education program for parents of at-risk adolescents. A logic model was created to highlight the relationship between program theory and measured constructs. Results comparing pre-workshop data with Week 10 data suggested significant increases in parent-reported parental support, parental behavioral control, and youth achievement, and significant decreases in youth antisocial behavior. Youth reported significant increases in maternal and paternal support and maternal behavioral control and significant decreases in antisocial behaviors.

This manuscript utilizes data from a telephone survey of 312 parent educators across the state of Tennessee to inform research and service efforts of a university-based parenting center. Specifically, we investigated (a) techniques used to disseminate parenting information, (b) specialized populations targeted, (c) curricula used as well as the evidentiary basis of those curricula, and (d) parent educator training and education, all at both state and within-state regional levels. This study employed dominance analysis to assess the relative importance of maternal and paternal support, behavioral control, and psychological control in explaining depression, antisocial behavior, and social initiative within 644 adolescents. We noted the lack of replicated findings concerning differential effects of mothers and fathers and employed an approach that considered mothers’ and fathers’ overlapping predictive abilities in determining their relative importance.
