Service Leadership: The First Year Student Experience, Connor Curtis May 2018

Service Leadership: The First Year Student Experience, Connor Curtis

Senior Honors Projects

Servant leadership, in the words of Robert Greenleaf from the Greenleaf Center of Servant Leadership, is “a servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.” This has become one of the guiding theories of leadership within the Center for Student Leadership Development’s (CSLD) Leadership Studies minor at the University of Rhode Island. First-year students in the Leadership Studies minor have the opportunity to learn different leadership models and theories and apply them to their own life. My personal experience and the experiences of others who have participated in service projects locally ...

Service Learning At Cleveland Clinic, Julie Novario

Undergraduate Research Symposium

In the fall semester of 2017 I had a service-learning experience at the Cleveland Clinic Solon Family Health Center. The Family Health Center had a problem getting patients to return for vaccinations, especially the multiple series vaccines. Because the center lacked time and resources, I was able to intern with them to assist and help improve the vaccination rates. I reviewed the files and information regarding vaccinations and developed a protocol for calling patients. These phone calls were used for setting vaccination appointments as well as educating patients on vaccines. Another project I worked on was assisting patients with living ...

Betrayal In Families: Factors Associated With Elder Financial Exploitation By Relatives With Powers Of Attorney, Virginia B. Vincenti, Bernard A. Steinman Phd

Social Justice Research Center Grant Awards

Prevention is the best approach to addressing elder financial exploitation (EFE). Our research provided insight into possible precursors in families that increase risk for EFE or protect families from EFE. Specific areas assessed included facts related to the elder, their power-of-attorney (POA) agent, and their family system before, during, and after implementation of the POA.This project is collecting survey data of family members from two groups. One has experienced EFE and another that has not experienced EFE by a family member with POA for an older relative.

W.H.Y. Campaign - We Hear You: Improving Mental Health In College Freshman, Julie Novario, Jessica M. Lockhart, Abigail E. Day, Emily Eichhorn

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Depression and anxiety in college freshman is growing quickly from 10 to 15 percent in the 1980’s to 33 to 40 percent today. Through research on previous interventions and statistics collected from colleges across the United States, we have determined that mental illness on college campuses goes unrecognized. Almost 73 percent of students living with a mental health condition have experienced a mental health crisis on a college campus. Concern of stigma is the number one reason students do not seek help. In light of these findings we have developed an intervention to implement in freshman courses and residence ...

Assessing The Strategic Credibility Of Special Collections, Erin Passehl, Rick A. Stoddart

Rick A Stoddart

In this time of often precarious funding at many colleges and universities, any case that can be made to illustrate how a department strategically fits into the overall university mission is not only worth merit, but an essential survival technique. This “strategic credibility” within the university is a vital form of currency in determining institution-wide resources prioritization, collaboration opportunities between organizational units, and overall direction of departments. This paper presents a case study of academic special collections in the Northwest and examines the methods these departments use to demonstrate value to the university. This paper considers how well do special ...

Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel Moll Jul 2008

Information Literacy In The New Curriculum, Michiel Moll

Michiel E Moll

South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.

This paper first looks briefly at the changes in national curricula in South Africa, and then at the current ...

Albertsons Library at Boise State University has been slow to move into the ebook arena for a variety of reasons including the inadequacies of simultaneous user models and the uncertainty of ebook technology. However, the most significant question for BSU has been usefulness of ebooks to their patrons. Are ebooks a passing fad or are they the answer to improved access to information? In January 2006, BSU selected a small group of technical books in an electronic format via the ProQuest Safari Tech Books Online database. This session will discuss the rational behind selecting technical books as an introduction to ...
