International Educational Reform, Cristine Lipscomb

Honors Theses

John Gardner sent out a plea for humanity. He claimed that there is a crisis in leadership; a lack of competent leaders to meet today's challenges. (On Leadership, 1990) One of today's foremost challenges is educational reform. Education demands the attention of leaders. By addressing the crisis in education, the crisis in leadership can be simultaneously improved.

The Jepson School curriculum is. designed to teach students for and about leadership. As a student, I have enhanced my potential to alleviate the crisis in leadership and contribute to my community in leadership/ followership contexts. However, integral sources from all ...

In the summer of 1993, I first began my relationship with Reynolds Metals Company in Richmond, Virginia. t was at that time I received an internship with the Executive Vice-President for Human Resources and External affairs, a man by the name of Don Cowles. At this time, Reynolds was under the leadership of a new CEO, Dick Holder, who had been in his position for around a year or two. Additionally, the aluminum industry at this time was very depressed due to the large quantities of raw materials that had flooded the world market after the Soviet Union collapsed. Prices ...

Leadership In Literature, Linda M. Ghers Jan 1994

Leadership In Literature, Linda M. Ghers

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to explore a controversial topic -- the utility of the arts and the function of aesthetics in society. Because the very nature of art is essentially an abstract representation of reality, to explore its function seems to be outside the realm of possibility. Yet many still consider art to have a didactic function, and the study of any of the arts is based on the premise that the appreciation and creation of art can be useful for instructing humanity about the world beyond the artwork itself. How and what art actually teaches are questions upon ...

The William Byrd Community House : Developing Youngsters Into Future Leaders, William Gill, Tanya M. Tyree

Honors Theses

Youth face several issues including neglect, abuse, poverty, crime, teenage pregnancy, drugs, and mental disorders among many others. All of these problems result in a greater lack of self esteem for those children involved. Who is responsible? In reality, it is a combination of factors. To make a difference, we researched the leadership opportunities of elementary aged students in the community, and little was found. In hopes of facilitating change we chose one of these areas, the community, to focus on and began to pioneer our own leadership program at the William Byrd Community House.

Looking Past The Surface : A Look At The Office Of Senate And Its Environment And The Implications Of Public Versus Private Morality, Jennifer A. Chaippetta Jan 1994

Looking Past The Surface : A Look At The Office Of Senate And Its Environment And The Implications Of Public Versus Private Morality, Jennifer A. Chaippetta

Honors Theses

By interning at the State Headquarters of Senator Robb's office, I was able to learn the nature of the leader/ constituent relationship first hand. I witnessed first hand how the government can be responsive to its constituency. Daily, I witnessed the business of constituent services that Senator Robb's office offered, be it through special projects such as the Salem VA hospital investigation, the constant concentration on the constituent through casework, and the direct interaction with the constituent. Without this leadership experience I would never have realized the essentially service related aspect of the Senator's work, and the ...

The Cloaking Of Justice: The Supreme Court's Role In The Application Of Western Law To America's Indigenous Peoples, David E. Wilkins Jan 1994

The Cloaking Of Justice: The Supreme Court's Role In The Application Of Western Law To America's Indigenous Peoples, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The debate over which legal Indigenous Peoples should govern Native American political power and property rights, or even whether they should be protected by law at all, caused conflicts challenging the autonomy of the legal system and led to changes of the original principles of Indian rights. The outcome of that conflict raises two questions of federal Indian law. One is where its principles contributed to the survival of Native Americans in the United States; the other is whether the same legal principles are responsible for the perpetual inferiority of Natives Americans in their own land. More starkly, the question ...

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman Jan 1994

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this article I first offer a brief historical account of European white settlement, and ultimately political dominance, in southern Africa. Next, I outline how whites, and in particular Afrikaner-dominated National Party governments after 1948, achieved almost total subjugation of South Africa’s black majority through oppressive legislation and the calculated use of force. In that regard I enumerate some of the draconian laws enacted in the post-1948 apartheid state — laws that served as an impetus for black nationalism, anger, resistance, protest and, after 1960, armed struggle to achieve liberation from white oppression. Against this background, I examine salient factors ...

The Assessment Of Political Personality: A Psychodiagnostically Relevant Conceptualization And Methodology, Aubrey Immelman Dec 1993

The Assessment Of Political Personality: A Psychodiagnostically Relevant Conceptualization And Methodology, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to narrow the conceptual and methodological gap between existing formulations in psychodiagnostic theory and current practice in political personality. It is suggested that accurate assessment of the personalities of high-level leaders can significantly improve the prediction of political outcomes but that this endeavor has been hampered by inadequate transposition from the source disciplines of personality theory and psychodiagnostics to the target discipline of contemporary political psychology. It is proposed that Theodore Millon’s personological model offers a viable integrative framework for the study of political personality. The present article explicates Millon’s model, specifies ...

This paper reports the method and preliminary findings of an investigation of the political personalities of South African president F.W. de Klerk and African National Congress president Nelson Mandela. The purpose of the study was to assess the utility of Theodore Millon’s personological model as an alternative or supplementary conceptual framework and methodology for the assessment of political personality. Conceptually, the investigation was conducted from the perspective of a model of personality compatible with Axis II of DSM-III-R, which serves as an important psychodiagnostic frame of reference for the practice of contemporary psychiatry and clinical psychology. Methodologically, the ...

Women In Leadership Program 1993: Shaping The Culture, Catriona Pyner

ECU Publications Pre. 2011

In discussing Women in Leadelrship one member of the Management Group sometimes used the term "Program", and sometimes "Project". This was not a mere slip of the tongue. One useful way to conceptualise "Women in Leadership" is as a Project- which seeks to strategically engage with a changing institution, and which is both organic and structured. Part of the Project structure is the Program. The Program is made up of three formal elements: The Collegial Groups; the Public Lecture Series and the National Conference. And yet, part of the Purpose of the Program is to engage with, shape and respond ...

The hypothesis tested focused on determining if there is a positive relationship between self-esteem and achievement at ROTC Advance Camp. Guatemalan Political History: National Indian Policy, 1532-1954, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The relationship between the Spanish and later the Guatemalan state with the Mayan Indians over the past four centuries is a fundamental component of Guatemalan political history. Since the beginnings of the nation, when the Mayans were political and military entities of power and independence with whom the Spanish had to come to terms; to the 1944-1954 "Revolutionary Era," when Indian communities were finally conceded limited social, economic, and political rights; and the period from 1979 to 1984 in which the military regimes killed "tens of thousands by some estimates as high as 80,000" Indians; the Indian population has ...

Critical Factors In The Relationship Between Rural Recipients Of Afdc And Their Financial Workers, Donna L. Cannon May 1992

Critical Factors In The Relationship Between Rural Recipients Of Afdc And Their Financial Workers, Donna L. Cannon

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study examines which personal and systemic factors precipitate a relatively productive or nonproductive relationship between a rural Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) recipient and her financial worker. Financial workers are the primary contact within county social services agencies for recipients of AFDC benefits. Recipients and workers are bound together hy a complex eligibility determination process that provides little incentive for recipient self-sufficiency, least of all in rural areas. This qualitative study is based on a triangular framework of focus groups and guided interviews with 23 recipients, four financial workers and two gatekeeper professionals. Interview questions were based ...

This study investigates two congregations among Churches of Christ with a prototype instrument adapted from questions used in a national survey (The Unchurched American, The Princeton Religion Research Center, 1978). The ministry objective for this project thesis is to generate an assessment instrument to be used as a tool for ministry between active and inactive church members.

Specific questions addressed are: what are the patterns of disengagement and re-entry in two local congregations connected with Churches of Christ? Is the disengagement of teenagers and young adults (age 13-24) in each local congregation measurably greater than other recognized age categories over ...

The Limits Of Natural Law: Thomas Rutherforth And The American Legal Tradition, Gary L. Mcdowell Jan 1992

The Limits Of Natural Law: Thomas Rutherforth And The American Legal Tradition, Gary L. Mcdowell

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The history of American constitutional jurisprudence has been marked by a persistent fascination with the idea of natural law. This springs first and foremost from the fact that we understand as our constitutional foundation those “laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” to which Thomas Jefferson made such eloquent appeal in the Declaration of Independence. Further, American politics since the founding of the republic has been characterized by a commitment, with more or less success, to the simple truth James Madison posited in The Federalist. “Justice,” Madison declared, “is the end of government. It is the end of civil ...

Who's In Charge Of U.S. Indian Policy?: Congress And The Supreme Court At Loggerheads Over American Indian Religious Freedom, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The federal government's three branches—executive, legislative, judicial, and that unwieldy mass known simply as "the bureaucracy" have, during the last half-decade—1987-1991—produced a dizzying crop of laws, policies, proclamations, regulations, and court decisions which have served simultaneously to 1) reaffirm tribal sovereignty; 2) permit and encourage greater state interference within Indian Country; 3) enhance federal legislative authority over tribes; and 4) deny constitutional free-exercise protections both to individual Indians and to tribes.

On the legislative side, Congress has established the experimental Tribal Self-Governance Demonstration Project which is a major step towards restoring the tribal right of self-determination ...
