This dissertation investigated the perceptions of alumni who participated in a civic leadership program (LP) in a large, metropolitan city with over 1.7 million residents in its local community. The program, with a 42 year-long history, had no formal data on its participants, the program, or its efficacy. The research investigated the expectations, experience, and engagement of participants over its 42-year history. The purpose of this capstone is to describe how a Hybrid Holistic Thinking Approach has helped the author analyze the Seabrook Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) review its perceived relevance as a national civil rights organization, address its systemic challenges, and reset the organization.
A quantitative, quasi-experimental research design was implemented to address organization improvement. This dissertation examines the application of interactive planning as an intervention for the purpose of exploring its effectiveness with diverse, cross-organizational stakeholders when considering an issue that transcends individual organizations. The case study offers a practitioner method and approach using systems and design thinking to re-envision talent management in the 4th Industrial Revolution. The focus of this ethnographic instrumental case study is to communicate the seriousness of a growing trend in the United States: closings of inner-city/urban Catholic schools by the local diocese.
