Professional Development In Libraries: One Size Does Not Fit All, Patricia D. Sobczak, Kathy Bradshaw

Charleston Library Conference

With the constantly changing landscape in 21st-century libraries, it would seem that professional development would be more important than ever. However, research indicates that few libraries have formal professional development programs, and there are mixed messages from library leaders regarding the necessity and importance of professional development. It is no secret that libraries always seem to be facing budget cuts, and funding for professional development is often seen as a low priority. We were curious to understand how professional development is viewed and executed in other academic libraries.

Professional development means different things to different people. To some, professional development ...

The Road To Effective Leadership, Shin Freedman, Jim Freedman Sep 2018

The Road To Effective Leadership, Shin Freedman, Jim Freedman

Charleston Library Conference

Library leadership is one of the much-discussed subjects in library and information science. Yet, many librarians tend to shy away from using the word “leadership” and the authors wondered why. It seemed peculiar that librarians tend not to associate themselves with the context of leaders or leadership. Whether you are a driven librarian or an ambitious young librarian, or you are an ambitious and driven person, library leadership is a rather remote subject for most librarians and information professionals. Why is that the case?

This paper will explore the world of library leaders and leadership by deconstructing the myths of ...

Yet, they all share the commonality of facing unforeseen challenges while seeking to emerge from the depths of inexperience. They will briefly share their experiences in leadership, as well as strategies for preparation, challenges they continue to face, and lessons they are still learning. Participants will learn about developing a personal leadership practice, as well as networking, mentoring, and professional development ...

Measuring And Disseminating Organizational Leadership Through Impact, Sarah Baumer, Alfredo Karduss

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

Our service learning experience as teaching assistants for Professor Brett Crawford’s Foundations of Organizational Leadership course (TLI112) included collaborating with community partners such as the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation, successfully acquiring grant funding as principal investigators, inventorying needs for native plants to replace weeds and invasive species, and disseminating our experiences through various measures of impact. Our efforts fit within a transformation of a large lecture course, moving away from passive learning and toward experiential activities that included 1,340 hours of community service during a single semester. Community service impacts were measured, including links between the Global Reporting ...

Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald F. Smith Mar 2017

Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald F. Smith

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Veterinary medicine has undergone sweeping changes in the last few decades. Women now account for 55 percent of the active veterinarians in the field, and nearly 80 percent of veterinary students are women. However, average salaries have dropped as this shift has occurred, and even with women in the vast majority, only 25 percent of leadership roles are held by women.

These trends point to gender-based inequality that veterinary medicine, a profession that tilts so heavily toward women, is struggling to address. How will the profession respond? What will this mean for our students and schools? What will it mean ...

A Concept Paper On Networks Of Excellence For Research And Education, Suresh V. Garimella, David B. Janes, Anne Slaughter Andrew Apr 2015

A Concept Paper On Networks Of Excellence For Research And Education, Suresh V. Garimella, David B. Janes, Anne Slaughter Andrew

PPRI Digital Library

Research and education ecosystems, foundational components of knowledge-based economies, are relatively underdeveloped in Latin America. The entire ecosystem of a research university — including resources, corporate partnerships, and research — must capitalize on a symbiosis between the research, education and commercialization missions. A university cannot transform unilaterally nor can universities sustain the required transformation without government and industry participation. Initiatives to accelerate the development of research university ecosystems are critical for the realization of knowledge-based economies and resilient civil societies.

To accelerate the development of research and education ecosystems across the Americas, the authors propose to establish “Networks of Excellence” in key ...

Documento Conceptual Sobre Redes De Excelencia Para La Investigación Y La Educación, Suresh V. Garimella, David B. Janes, Anne Slaughter Andrew

Waste And Duplication In Nasa Programs: The Need To Enhance U.S. Space Program Efficiency, Bert Chapman Feb 2015

Waste And Duplication In Nasa Programs: The Need To Enhance U.S. Space Program Efficiency, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The U.S. Government faces acute budgetary deficits and national debt problems in the Obama Administration. These problems have been brought about by decades of unsustainable government spending affecting all agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. (NASA). An outgrowth of this fiscal profligacy is the presence of wasteful and duplicative programs within NASA that prevent this agency from achieving its space science and human spaceflight objectives. These problems occur due to mismanagement of these programs from NASA and the creation of these programs by the U.S. Congress and congressional committees. This occurs because congressional appropriators tend to ...

PIBERG Publications

Science Faculty with Education Specialties (SFES) are increasingly being hired across the United States. However, little is known about the motivations for SFES hiring or the potential or actual impact of SFES. In the context of a recent national survey of US SFES, we investigated SFES perceptions about these issues. Strikingly, perceptions about reasons for hiring SFES were poorly aligned with perceptions about potential and actual contributions reported by SFES themselves, and the advice they extended to beginning SFES was varied. While preparation of future teachers and departmental teaching needs were common reasons offered for SFES hiring, the potential and ...
