Extremism Drives Out Moderation, Bettina Klose, Dan Kovenock Dec 2014

Extremism Drives Out Moderation, Bettina Klose, Dan Kovenock

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

This article examines the impact of the distribution of preferences on equilibrium behavior in conflicts modeled as all-pay auctions with identity-dependent externalities. Centrists and radicals are defined using a willingness-to-pay criterion that admits preferences more general than a simple ordering on the line. Extremism, characterized by a higher per capita expenditure by radicals than centrists, may persist and generate higher aggregate expenditure by radicals, even when they are relatively small in number. Our results demonstrate the importance of the institutions of conflict in determining the role of extremism and moderation in economic, political, and social environments.

Freeze, So I Can Take Your Stuff!, Daniel Rothschild Dec 2014

Freeze, So I Can Take Your Stuff!, Daniel Rothschild

Daniel Rothschild

This paper reports findings from my investigation of the effect of civil asset forfeiture on the state of California. I investigated the effect that civil asset forfeiture has on different cities in the State of California. The intention of this study was to build on Baicker and Jacobson’s research by looking at the overall effects of the cities’ budget to determine if civil forfeiture (and equitable sharing) leads to an increase in the amount of total funds for the city. My hypothesis is that the amount of money seized in an earlier year predicts the total budget of the ...

International Migration And Development: Myths And Facts, Piyasiri Wickramasekara Dec 2014

International Migration And Development: Myths And Facts, Piyasiri Wickramasekara

PIYASIRI WICKRAMASEKARA

International migration has emerged as a priority issue on the global agenda in the two decades, especially in the context of its positive role for economic development. There is however, still considerable controversy and stereotyping on migration and migrants. Politicians, anti-immigration lobbyists and the media in Western countries propagate a number of unfounded myths about migration. It is claimed that there is massive migration from the South to the North in recent times. Increasing migration under irregular situations is believed to result in security threats demanding stringent border controls at destinations. Another longstanding myth is that migrants steal jobs from ...

Avaliando O Modelo De Governança Das Agências Reguladoras, Lucia Helena Salgado, Eduardo Pedral Fiuza

Lucia Helena Salgado

Techniques, Technologies And Politics Of Crisis And Post-Crisis Economics: Anglo-American Macroeconomics And Alternatives, Jeffrey K. Hass Dec 2014

Techniques, Technologies And Politics Of Crisis And Post-Crisis Economics: Anglo-American Macroeconomics And Alternatives, Jeffrey K. Hass

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper attempts a critical appraisal of one core debate and theories in economics about the 2008 crisis and post-2008 economic growth and stagnation. In addition to examining formal publications, this essay also examines serious blogs by high-profile economists who are core participants in public discourse over economic policy. Drawing on the general logic of economic sociology and political economy — in particular, an appreciation for more complex microfoundations of economic practice (e.g. power and culture) and institutions—this paper addresses three issues about theoretical frameworks and claims about post-crisis growth or lack thereof: 1) Techniques: economists’ discourses focus primarily ...

Autism Spectrum Disorder In An Indian Context: Impact Of Socioeconomic Factors On The Experiences Of Individuals With Asd And Their Families, Kendall Harman Dec 2014

Autism Spectrum Disorder In An Indian Context: Impact Of Socioeconomic Factors On The Experiences Of Individuals With Asd And Their Families, Kendall Harman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

While Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition that appears in comparable rates across social, ethnic and geographic groups, the quality and quantity of ASD-related resources and services is significantly lower in developing countries, including India. Moreover, sociocultural factors play a major role in the experiences of people with ASD. Yet, the bulk of ASD-related research has been conducted in developed countries. This study aimed to examine how social, cultural, political and economic factors impact the experiences of people with ASD living in India and their families. Seventeen parents of children with ASD were interviewed, and semi-structured observations of different ...

Curbing Corporate Inversions: A Study Of National And International Efforts To Establish Corporate Tax Equity, Scott Novak Dec 2014

Curbing Corporate Inversions: A Study Of National And International Efforts To Establish Corporate Tax Equity, Scott Novak

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In recent years, the number of U.S. companies trying to merge with a foreign company and thereby reincorporate themselves in countries with a lower corporate tax rate – a practice known as corporate inversion – has skyrocketed. The public outcry in 2014 against corporate inversions led the U.S. Treasury to release a series of new anti-inversion regulations, and more policy changes are in the process of being debated. At the same time as this national discussion on the harmful effects corporate inversions have on the U.S. tax base is progressing, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is ...

Executive Overreach By Minority Governments, Madhav S. Aney, Shubhankar Dam Dec 2014

Executive Overreach By Minority Governments, Madhav S. Aney, Shubhankar Dam

Research Collection School Of Economics

A provision in the Indian constitution allows the executive to make laws in the event oneof the two houses of parliament is not in session. This provision was intended to allow theexecutive to act in case there’s an immediate legislative necessity and the parliament cannotbe convened. Using a bargaining model with asymmetric information we show how partieswithin the parliament may reach an agreement on legislations when the ruling party does notcommand a majority (minority government). The model makes predictions about lawmakingpatterns by the legislature when the parliament is in session, and ordinances by the executivewhen the parliament is not ...

The Argentine Dilemma: “Vulture Funds” And The Risks Posed To Developing Economies, Mine Doyran Nov 2014

The Argentine Dilemma: “Vulture Funds” And The Risks Posed To Developing Economies, Mine Doyran

Class, Race and Corporate Power

Post-crisis Argentina is a case study of crisis management through debt restructuring. This article examines how Argentina negotiated the external debt in the wake of the sovereign default in December 2001 and now confronts challenges posed by holdout creditors—the so called “vulture funds”. It argues that debt restructuring has put a straitjacket on the national economy, making it virtually impossible for healthy growth short of a break with the international economic order. While Argentina has successfully restructured a $95 billion debt with an unprecedented “hair cut” (around 70% reduction in “net value of debt”), a sustainable growth appears out ...

Stewardship In Free Markets And The Sanctification Process, Jeffrey E. Haymond Nov 2014

Stewardship In Free Markets And The Sanctification Process, Jeffrey E. Haymond

Jeffrey E. Haymond, Ph.D.

This article reviews the biblical doctrines of sanctification and stewardship, and assesses the implications for economic institutional arrangements. Sanctification is one part of the process of salvation, yet it is the one aspect (in addition to initial repentance) that requires human partnership with what God is doing to redeem a people. Sanctification is seen to be the changing of our heart’s inclinations as we increasingly apply the truth of God in our daily, moment-by-moment actions. Thus our freedom to choose has eternal consequences as we become increasingly conformed to the image of Christ. While sanctification occurs in many facets ...

Avant-Garde Welfare Capitalism: Corporate Welfare Work And Enlightened Capitalism In Great Britain, The Us, Germany And France (1880-1930), Erik De Gier

Conference Proceedings, Presentations, and Speeches

This research paper deals with welfare work in four industrializing countries, Great Britain, the USA, Germany and France, in the half century of flowering enlightened paternalistic capitalism between 1880 and 1930. Welfare work in this context is defined as, sometimes overly, paternalistic labour policy of enlightened entrepreneurs often encompassing workman’s housing programs, pensions, saving programs, educational programs, sports facilities, medical services, worker participation, generous remuneration forms, and shorter working times. The question is raised if nowadays flex-capitalism in the context of shrinking collective welfare states can learn lessons from past experience with welfare work. By redefining paternalistic welfare work ...

A Holistic Approach To The Management Of Human Consumption Towards An Economics Of Well-Being, Gandolfo Dominici, Vasja Roblek Nov 2014

A Holistic Approach To The Management Of Human Consumption Towards An Economics Of Well-Being, Gandolfo Dominici, Vasja Roblek

Vasja Roblek

The goal of this conceptual paper is to draw attention to the problems caused by the rapid growth of the global economy, coupled with high population growth and excessive exploitation of natural resources. It is necessary to be aware that the global economy will not be able to grow at the actual speed in the long term. A paradigm shift in production and consumption is therefore necessary to avoid the collapse of ecosystems and the concurrent reduction of stocks of natural resources. This is the reason why capitalism has to take a new direction towards a sustainable and naturally harmonized ...

Regional Integration And National Social Policies, Mary Anne Madeira Oct 2014

Regional Integration And National Social Policies, Mary Anne Madeira

Publications and Research

How does regionalization affect national social policies? Although there is an extensive literature on the effects of globalization on social protection, the literature on the impact of regional integration is much less developed. I argue that the distinctive nature of regionalization processes calls for rigorous empirical testing of the domestic policy effects of regional integration. To this end, using an innovative dataset that measures the degree to which countries are integrated into regional economic and political organizations, this article uses statistical analysis to consider the influence of regional integration on government social spending. The results are surprising: regionalization has a ...

Amicus Brief In Maryland Comptroller V. Wynne, Michael S. Knoll, Ruth Mason Sep 2014

Amicus Brief In Maryland Comptroller V. Wynne, Michael S. Knoll, Ruth Mason

Faculty Scholarship at Penn Law

The internal consistency test reveals that Maryland applies systematically higher “county” taxes to interstate commerce than to in-state commerce.

Economic analysis of Maryland’s tax regime — including its taxes on inbound, outbound, and domestic activities — confirms what the internal consistency test suggests, namely, that the Maryland “county” tax discourages interstate commerce. Specifically, the Maryland tax regime discourages Maryland residents from earning income outside of Maryland, and it simultaneously discourages nonresidents from earning income in Maryland. Maryland alone causes this distortion; the distortion does not depend on the taxes imposed by any other state.

Petitioner’s argument that Maryland’s outbound ...
