Staying Alive: The Challenges Facing University Presses In The Dawn Of The Digital Age, Whitney Simmons Dec 2009

Staying Alive: The Challenges Facing University Presses In The Dawn Of The Digital Age, Whitney Simmons

Master of Science in Publishing

This master's thesis examines the pressures being placed upon university press publishers in the United States. These pressures, which include economic trouble, decrease university support, and new developments in technology, are compelling presses to explore the field of digital publishing to both help relieve the financial burden on the press and keep with the scholarship needs of the university's scholars and students. The ability of a press to transition to digital operations will depend on their ability to communicate with their university and to also collaborate with other university presses to create a shared digital infrastructure.

"Serving Sinners, Comforting Saints And Increasing Faith": The Reverend Edythe Stirlen's Imagined Radio Church Community, Arlecia Deandra Simmons

Theses and Dissertations

In the early 1920s, commercial radio presented many possibilities, including the nationalization of the listening audience, professional opportunities for women, the ability for ministers to spread the gospel, and access to the world for geographically isolated listeners. The media ministry of the Rev. Edythe Elem Swartz Stirlen operated outside the confines of a brick-and-mortar church and created an imagined religious community of congregants. Through the Shenandoah, Iowa, based Radio Church of the Air program, the Send Out Sunshine magazine, and the Send Out Sunshine Clubs, Stirlen and her virtual parishioners created images of communion they interpreted and used to maintain ...

The study was of interest to the practitioners as more than half of the respondents requested a copy of the results. Additionally ...

Sound Matters: Aural Rhetoric In Pharmaceutical Advertising (Toward A Theory And Method Of Auralacy), Michael Hovan

All Theses

As scholarly theories and explorations of visuality continue to grow in prominence within the discourse on multimodal communication, a gap remains in the literature regarding the affective qualities of sound in multimedia messages. The following study attempts to address this gap and likewise propose a theory of auralacy (aural literacy) by examining the audiovisual interactions present in three different pharmaceutical commercials.
This study begins by examining literature regarding Gestalt perceptual theory, with emphasis on its origins, historical developments, and current status in perceptual research. The literature shows that perceptual wholes may be formed visually, tactilely, aurally, or even intermodally. After ...

The Convergence Of Broadcasting And Telephony: Legal And Regulatory Implications, Christopher S. Yoo Dec 2009

The Convergence Of Broadcasting And Telephony: Legal And Regulatory Implications, Christopher S. Yoo

Faculty Scholarship at Penn Law

This article, written for the inaugural issue of a new journal, analyzes the extent to which the convergence of broadcasting and telephony induced by the digitization of communications technologies is forcing policymakers to rethink their basic approach to regulating these industries. Now that voice and video are becoming available through every transmission technology, policymakers can no longer define the scope of regulatory obligations in terms of the mode of transmission. In addition, jurisdictions that employ separate agencies to regulate broadcasting and telephony must reform their institutional structures to bring both within the ambit of a single regulatory agency. The emergence ...
