Interpreting And Implementing Interculturality: Eib Educators And In-Service Teacher Training Programs, Frances Kvietok Jun 2018

Interpreting And Implementing Interculturality: Eib Educators And In-Service Teacher Training Programs, Frances Kvietok

Working Papers in Educational Linguistics (WPEL)

Built on the premise that there is a gap between policy design and policy implementation, this paper seeks to understand how Peruvian teachers make sense of and implement Intercultural Bilingual Education (EIB) policy. EIB policy, introduced in 1991, recognizes the linguistic and cultural rights of marginalized indigenous students in schooling. This paper explores how in-service teacher training workshops influence teachers’ interpretation and implementation of interculturality by looking at experiences of the teacher training workshops run by Fundación HoPe Holanda Perú (HOPE) and Asociación Pukllasunchis in Cusco, Peru. Through this analysis, the paper shows how in-service teacher training workshops can contribute ...

European Union Defense Integration: The Quixotic Legacy Of The Early Treaties, Amanda Von Trapp Jun 2018

European Union Defense Integration: The Quixotic Legacy Of The Early Treaties, Amanda Von Trapp

Political Science Honors Theses

European defense integration is encumbered by historic disagreement over two questions—what integration model should be used to develop a common defense and who should be included? The outcome the European Union’s earliest and foremost influential security arrangements of the 1940s and 1950s instigated a complex legacy of fault lines and friction. This paper looks at the history of the 1947 Dunkirk Treaty, the 1948 Brussels Treaty, and the failed 1954 European Defense Community to illustrate the emergence of two sets of tensions, Atlanticism versus Europeanism and Supranationalism versus Intergovernmentalism. The tensions between these positions explain Europe’s inability ...

Land Reform In South Africa: The Conversation That Never Took Place, Godswill Makombe Prof Jun 2018

Land Reform In South Africa: The Conversation That Never Took Place, Godswill Makombe Prof

The Qualitative Report

After independence, South Africa embarked on a land reform programme that is meant to redress the highly inequitable land ownership which resulted from Apartheid. The programme comprises land redistribution, land restitution and land tenure. On restitution projects, the maintenance of production has been highly problematic. Loss of production means there is very little or no livelihoods impacts from restitution. The beneficiaries of restitution projects usually have neither farming experience nor capital to continue or restart the farm operations. As a result, most restitution projects are either non-functional or are functioning at a meager fraction of previous levels. Most studies on ...

Bringing Up The Green-Eyed Monster: Conceptualizing And Communicating Jealousy With A Partner Who Has Other Partners, Valerie Rubinsky Jun 2018

Bringing Up The Green-Eyed Monster: Conceptualizing And Communicating Jealousy With A Partner Who Has Other Partners, Valerie Rubinsky

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of 423 open-ended survey responses from 141 individuals involved in polyamorous intimate partnerships. Grounded in literature on jealousy and polyamory, this analysis offers a reinforcement and extension of romantic jealousy. Participants described how jealousy is conceptualized and discussed within polyamorous relationships. Conceptualizations of jealousy primarily involved jealousy as an umbrella term for insecurity, possessiveness, or needs not being met. Participants discuss jealousy within the context of partner agreements to add or remove another partner, to explicitly seek validation and acknowledgment, and less frequently meeting negative reactions. Importantly, results indicate that within polyamorous relationships, feelings ...

An Adaptation Of Grounded Theory Using A Modified Convergent Interviewing Technique, Elica Safari Mehr, Peter Carswell, Karen Day Jun 2018

An Adaptation Of Grounded Theory Using A Modified Convergent Interviewing Technique, Elica Safari Mehr, Peter Carswell, Karen Day

The Qualitative Report

Grounded Theory (GT) researchers have been using adaptations of this methodology to serve theory building purposes, following different theoretical frameworks. However, there is a lack of enough information on the variation of GT used, or their epistemological assumptions in some studies. The purpose of this paper is to provide our experience in a GT study using a modified convergent interviewing technique to help guide other researchers on using this method and build their own research design. We have combined a decision-making technique, called Delphi, with convergent interviewing and provided a clear explanation of the steps required to apply this method ...

Catholic Documents 101: A Theological Librarian’S Guide To Identifying, Locating, And Using The Documents Of The Catholic Church, Andrew Kosmowski

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

Over the course of 2,000 years, theologians have accreted mountains of writings on every aspect of the Christian faith. While even devoted students of Christian doctrine likely will not have time to scale all of the peaks in a single academic lifetime, they cannot afford to skip completely over one of the highest summits: the documents of the “teaching arm” of the Catholic Church, the Magisterium, which safeguards the deposit of faith and interprets controversies in light of it. Those approaching doctrinal matters, such as the atonement and the virgin birth, from a Protestant perspective may find it beneficial ...

Acculturation And Cross-Cultural Adaptation Among Refugees: The Moderating Role Of Emotions, Ezdehar Z. Alsahow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As a result of venturing across language and culture boundaries, individuals may

be exposed to different ways of living and thinking in which may trigger changes in the

way they conceptualize themselves and others. However, such experiences are not

identical for everyone, and the circumstances facing the crisis of refugees would appear

to be exceptionally difficult.

This paper aimed to address refugees’ attempt to acculturate and integrate into a

new society by examining potential moderating factors of emotional processes. The study

focuses on anger, anxiety, pride, and guilt; emotions that refugees carried with them

when they arrived to the new ...

Understanding Asean - An Alternative Approach To International Relations Theory In Asia, Ryan Grimstad Driver Jun 2018

Understanding Asean - An Alternative Approach To International Relations Theory In Asia, Ryan Grimstad Driver

Dissertations and Theses

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was originally formed in 1967 by five members as a means to promote peaceful relations and prevent the spread of communist influence within their sovereign states. Since then the regional organization has doubled in size and now includes communist states amongst its membership as it seeks to establish itself as a strong economic and political hub for the greater region as two large military powers, China and the United States, vie for hegemonic influence. The American presence in the region must be governed by a firm understanding of ASEAN's unique nature and ...

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal Palace ...
