Capital Mobility And Job Loss: Corporate Restructuring, Production Shifts, And Outsourcing, Stephanie Luce, Kate Bronfenbrenner

Kate Bronfenbrenner

[Excerpt] This chapter examines the impact of corporate restructuring and global outsourcing on employment in the Commonwealth and the shifts in production from workplaces in Massachusetts to other countries. In particular we focus on global outsourcing, the shifting of work from Massachusetts offshore to countries in Europe and Asia, and nearshore to Canada and countries in Latin America. Given the huge media attention that outsourcing and nearshoring have garnered, and the increasing trend they represent toward corporate restructuring and capital mobility with lasting repercussions for workers, families, unions, and communities in the Commonwealth, it is important to assess their relative ...

Daniel Denton (C.1626–1703), Paul Royster

Paul Royster

Daniel Denton wrote and published A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF NEW-YORK: FORMERLY CALLED NEW-NETHERLANDS in London in 1670. The work was a promotional tract designed to encourage English settlement of territories lately seized from the Dutch. It is one of the earliest English accounts of the geography, climate, economy, and native inhabitants of the region that includes present-day New York City, Long Island, Staten Island, and New Jersey. The tract is perhaps most famous for its early statement of Manifest Destiny: how “a Divine Hand makes way for them [the English settlers] by removing or cutting off the Indians, either by ...

Evidence For Prehistoric Maize Horticulture At The Pine Hill Site, Deerfield, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Chilton, Largy B. Tonya, Kathryn Curran

Elizabeth S. Chilton

The degree of reliance on maize horticulture by New England Algonquians during the Late Woodland Period (ad 1000–1600) is a subject of debate among archaeologists in the region. Archaeological evidence from the Pine Hill site (19FR17), Deerfield, Massachusetts, indicates that while maize was apparently stored by native peoples in subterranean pits, it was not necessarily a staple food; there is, in fact, more evidence to suggest that maize was a dietary supplement in the middle Connecticut Valley (Massachusetts portion) during the Late Woodland period. Evidence from the Pine Hill site and other sites underscores the need for attention to ...

A case in point is Yugoslavia, with its major groups of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. In addition to these nationalities there are minority groups of Albanians, Hungarians, Romanians ,and others. A similar situation exists in Belgium with regard to the Flemings and Walloons.  From an Asian perspective, the Chines in Southeast Asia are a ...
