Cultural And Social Problems Of An Indian Pueblo, Thomas P. Lief Mar 1961

Cultural And Social Problems Of An Indian Pueblo, Thomas P. Lief

Sociology ETDs

This study describes the impact of social change upon the social structure of an Indian pueblo community in New Mexico. It is an investigation of the variant social forces and their conflicting impingements. Given a certain culture heritage, a particular historical background and a specific physical and social setting, what are the results of change upon the social system and upon the individual? To fit this inquiry into the empirical realm of facts, the community of San Juan pueblo was chosen, not so much because of its unique cultural configuration, as for the fact that it offered an opportune area ...

A Political Study Of Federal Aid To Education At Utah State University, Richard Yates Merrell May 1960

A Political Study Of Federal Aid To Education At Utah State University, Richard Yates Merrell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the present-day world of change, every time we pick up the paper we read of something new in our society. We now have new rockets, new satellites, new computers, and new methods or destruction. There are also many "new" things in the field of education. One of these is federal aid to education. As yet, there seems to be no consensus on the merits or this supposedly new approach to educational finance. Some view it as a kind or plague; others see it as an unmixed blessing. Actually, federal aid to education is quite old and quite common.

The Juarez Stake Academy, Dale M. Valentine Jan 1955

The Juarez Stake Academy, Dale M. Valentine

Theses and Dissertations

While the history of the Latter-day Saints who colonized in Mexico is probably not generally known by the majority of Latter-day Saints living throughout the world today, it nevertheless comprises an exceptionally colorful and exciting chapter of the history of Mormonism. The Latter-day Saints who went to Mexico created there a culture and society which has never been duplicated. Probably one of the chief concerns of the Mormon Colonists in Mexico was to establish in their society a culture which would be lastingly enduring and which would progressively improve. Secondly, it is also probable that they were passionately desirous of ...

Juvenile Delinquency: Approaches And Treatment, Nancy Fischer

Senior Scholar Papers

One of the most critical problems facing the American nation today is the delinquency of its children and adolescents. It is questlonable whether there is a greater problem today than in the past. The problem has been brought out in the open now through the action of our law enforcement agencies and social service organisation, while in earlier times few statistics were available concerning delinquency. Even today, many deliquent children escape the attention of the law or are in such a favorable situation in the community that their misdemeanore are passed by. Dr. Paul Tappan states: "All, or at least ...

Education And Living: Volume 2, Ralph Borsodi

School of Living Documents

In Education and Living, a two-volume work, Borsodi elaborated the model of the School of Living. Most of volume one consists of a critique of “mis-education.” Most of that critique focuses on the problems of centralization; centralization of industry, the economy, politics and education. The second volume of Education and Living explains Borsodi’s vision of achieving decentralization in detail. The second volume is in two parts: Right-Education and Re-Education. It explains how to educate for the “Normal” human being and for achieving the “Normal” way of living. This is not the “normal” of the bell curve, the average of ...

Report By Hans Schwalm On A Meeting With Alfred Huhnhäuser, October 17, 1942, Hans Schwalm

Norwegian Projects

This report by Hans Schwalm on a meeting with Alfred Huhnhäuser discusses possibilities for creating a centralized research institute in Norway. Huhnhäuser was disappointed that his plan would receive no support as long as it included the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Society as the main tie to Germany. He and Schwalm discuss other options. Schwalm reports on the situation of the Ahnenerbe in pursuing such a project, indicating that they are 2 1/2 years behind Huhnhäuser, who has achieved great respect and built solid connections. He indicates that it would be better to work with Huhnhäuser than pursue such a project separately. The ...

The Importance Of Play, Laura V. Douglas Jun 1930

The Importance Of Play, Laura V. Douglas

Education Student Dissertations

While reading the "Principles of Educational Sociology" by Walter Robinson Smith, the writer was deeply impressed by the statement that "Next to the family group and home life, the play group and play life exert the most vital influence upon the unfolding personality of the child." The writer wondered if it was the absence of play life, as American born children of fair social background experience it, that would in some measure explain the dullness of the Italian-American child of Sicilian and Neapolitan origin, who, as the writer knew him, was so lovable, so anxious and eager to please and ...
