Integrating Data Science Tools Into A Graduate Level Data Management Course, Pete E. Pascuzzi, Megan R. Sapp Nelson Dec 2018

Integrating Data Science Tools Into A Graduate Level Data Management Course, Pete E. Pascuzzi, Megan R. Sapp Nelson

Journal of eScience Librarianship

Objective: This paper describes a project to revise an existing research data management (RDM) course to include instruction in computer skills with robust data science tools.

Setting: A Carnegie R1 university.

Brief Description: Graduate student researchers need training in the basic concepts of RDM. However, they generally lack experience with robust data science tools to implement these concepts holistically. Two library instructors fundamentally redesigned an existing research RDM course to include instruction with such tools. The course was divided into lecture and lab sections to facilitate the increased instructional burden. Learning objectives and assessments were designed at a higher order ...

The Problem With Dates: Applying Iso 8601 To Research Data Management, Kristin A. Briney Sep 2018

The Problem With Dates: Applying Iso 8601 To Research Data Management, Kristin A. Briney

Journal of eScience Librarianship

Dates appear regularly in research data and metadata but are a problematic data type to normalize due to a variety of potential formats. This suggests an opportunity for data librarians to assist with formatting dates, yet there are frequent examples of data librarians using diverse strategies for this purpose. Instead, data librarians should adopt the international date standard ISO 8601. This standard provides needed consistency in date formatting, allows for inclusion of several types of date-time information, and can sort dates chronologically. As regular advocates for standardization in research data, data librarians must adopt ISO 8601 and push for its ...

Gaining Competency: Learning To Teach Data Visualization, Kristin A. Briney Dec 2017

Gaining Competency: Learning To Teach Data Visualization, Kristin A. Briney

Journal of eScience Librarianship

Data services librarians are often faced with local needs in all 12 data information literacy competencies (Carlson et al. 2011) but may not have the requisite skills in each area to offer services.

Gaining expertise in an unfamiliar competency, particularly one which has not historically been associated with the library like “data visualization and representation”, can be challenging.

This paper identifies a scaffolding for librarians to gain foundational experience in data visualization and provides a case study on one library’s initial service offering in this area – a “Data Visualization 101” workshop.

A Pilot Competency Matrix For Data Management Skills: A Step Toward The Development Of Systematic Data Information Literacy Programs, Megan R. Sapp Nelson Feb 2017

A Pilot Competency Matrix For Data Management Skills: A Step Toward The Development Of Systematic Data Information Literacy Programs, Megan R. Sapp Nelson

Journal of eScience Librarianship

Initial work in identifying data management or data information literacy skills generally went as far as identifying a list of proposed competencies without further differentiation between those competencies, whether by discipline, complexity, or use case. This article describes a significant innovation upon existing competencies by identifying a scaffolding (built upon existing competencies) that moves students progressively from undergraduate training through post graduate coursework and research to post-doctoral work and into the early years of data stewardship. The scaffolding ties together existing research that has been completed in research data management skills and data information literacy with research into the outcomes ...

Integrating Data Information Literacy Into A Service- Learning Engineering Design Course, Margaret Phillips, Mohammad Jahanshahi Jan 2017

Integrating Data Information Literacy Into A Service- Learning Engineering Design Course, Margaret Phillips, Mohammad Jahanshahi

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Over the past several years increasing emphasis has been placed on the development of data information literacy (DIL) skills for engineering researchers to comply with funding requirements and to facilitate data sharing, reuse, and preservation. These efforts have been largely aimed at faculty members and graduate students, and to some extent undergraduate students in preparation for their roles as future researchers. However, little attention has been directed at developing DIL skills in undergraduate engineering students engaged in non-research activities, such as service-learning design projects that integrate instruction and community service. This work-in-progress paper reports on using service-learning pedagogy to integrate ...

Data Information Literacy: Developing Data Information Literacy Programs, Jake Carlson Apr 2016

Data Information Literacy: Developing Data Information Literacy Programs, Jake Carlson

University of Massachusetts and New England Area Librarian e-Science Symposium

Researchers are under increasing pressure to manage, organize, describe and document their data in ways that enable others to discover, understand and reuse their work. However, the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in these tasks are not often a part of a student's education in college or graduate school. Librarians have an opportunity to address this gap in student's education through developing data literacy programming, but developing effective data literacy programs can seem daunting.

This session will introduce students to a model for creating data literacy programming developed as a part of the Data Information Literacy ...
