Presentation At Penn Urban Studies Colloquium: Delhi, The Invisible City, Kushanava Choudhury, Durba Chattaraj, Moulshri Joshi

Presentations (Social Science Studio)

New Delhi is the capital of India, and a master-planned metropolis. Its unplanned spaces such as Urban Villages, Unauthorized Colonies and Jhuggi Jhopri Clusters tend to be seen as the margins of the planned city. Yet a majority of citizens live and work in these unplanned areas of the city.

For millions of Delhi-ites, the non-planned areas are sources of affordable rental housing as well as employment, as locations for thousands of small businesses and workshops. These spaces and the economies and communities they contain, are connected to the planned city through complex political and economic arrangements. These spaces and ...

Legal Tails: Policing American Cities Through Animals, Irus Braverman

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 8 in Policing Cities: Urban Securitization and Regulation in a 21st Century World, Randy K. Lippert & Kevin Walby, eds.

“I don’t worry about the four-legged animals,” Officer Armatys tells me as I scramble to catch up when he enters a backyard with a fierce-looking dog. “It’s the two-legged animals I am concerned about.” I interviewed Officer Armatys twice, first in his office in the Erie County’s Society for the Protection of Animals (ESPCA) and, a few months later, on a ride-along during a routine workday. Based on these encounters and numerous others with members ...

Vanessa Lopez - Family Ties: Exploring Familial Relationships For Individuals With A Felony Conviction, Vanessa Lopez Jul 2013

Vanessa Lopez - Family Ties: Exploring Familial Relationships For Individuals With A Felony Conviction, Vanessa Lopez

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

This qualitative study explores the difficulties released prisoners and their families encounter through the reintegration process. The reentry process into society is a challenge for both released prisoners and their families to overcome, since the social stigma of a criminal conviction creates barriers. The challenging component of the social stigma essentially prevents individuals with a criminal conviction from sustaining themselves financially and finding a place to live. Besides the stress of overcoming the barriers of judgments created by society; many of these individuals have to face the rejection of their children, partners, and extended kinship groups. Existing literature has focused ...

Innovators Needed: Workforce Development In The 21st Century, Melissa Laning, Emily Stenberg, John Lehner, Pat Hawthorne

University Libraries Presentations

One of the most exciting and important conversations within the academic library community is the evolving role of the library in colleges and universities. Among the many scenarios that have been discussed in recent years, one constant is the continuing need for library personnel who can successfully provide information resources to members of the learning and research communities. What are the skills that current and future library professionals will need to be successful in the 21st century academic library? How will organizations recruit, retain and develop the people they need to remain vital?

Sexual Desire Discrepancy: A Dyadic Longitudinal Study, Anthony A. Hughes, James Harper Apr 2013

Sexual Desire Discrepancy: A Dyadic Longitudinal Study, Anthony A. Hughes, James Harper

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Using questionnaires, self-report, and partner report of spouse, this five year longitudinal investigation examined the growth trajectory of the sexual desire discrepancy (SDD) of married partners within midlife, with insecure attachment at time 1 as a predictor. Findings showed that insecure attachment was a significant predictor of wives intercept but not for husbands. Insecure attachment wasn't a significant predictor of either partner's slope. As husbands SDD score changed, their growth across time had an inverse change. Husband slope and intercept had an inverse correlation. Wives intercept and husband intercept correlated or changed together. Wife slope and husband intercept ...

The Role Of Farm Families In Local Community Philanthropy, Paul Lasley, John Ferrell, J. Gordon Arbuckle Apr 2013

The Role Of Farm Families In Local Community Philanthropy, Paul Lasley, John Ferrell, J. Gordon Arbuckle

Extension Community and Economic Development Publications

Historically rural community development was rooted in self-help and collaborative efforts. Often organized on informal bases, these social actions and behaviors fell into the general rubric of “being a good neighbor.” Lacking access to political capital and external resources, residents of many small communities discovered that if something was going to get done, they had to do it themselves. Cooperative community action such as building schools, churches, stringing early electrical lines, and other public goods were rooted in a common belief that neighbors helping each other was the only viable way to make community improvements. These shared values of helping ...

Peers, Caregivers, Religion, And Sex Education: Relationships To Sexual Awareness, Kaj Benson, Marissa Wallenberg Apr 2013

Peers, Caregivers, Religion, And Sex Education: Relationships To Sexual Awareness, Kaj Benson, Marissa Wallenberg

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2013

As research on sexuality expands, more interest has grown in understanding how social influences relate to people's sex practices (e.g., Ahrold & Meston, 2010; Davis &Friel, 2001; Meier, 2003; Potard, Courtois, & Rusch, 2008). However, little research has been done on how these factors influence cognitions about sexuality. Therefore, this study examined the relationships between peer and caregivers’ attitudes toward sexuality, experiences with sex education, religiosity, and participants' awareness and acceptance of their sexuality. A convenience sample of 77 college students completed eight surveys related to the above topics. All scales used a 5-point Likert scale. Results indicate a positive correlation between peers' attitudes ...
