Gender Disparities In Self-Employment In Urban China's Market Transition: Income Inequality, Occupational Segregation, And Mobility Processes, Qian Forrest Zhang Dec 2012

Gender Disparities In Self-Employment In Urban China's Market Transition: Income Inequality, Occupational Segregation, And Mobility Processes, Qian Forrest Zhang

Qian Forrest ZHANG

This paper presents the first quantitative analysis of gender disparities in self-employment in urban China. It documents the extent of gender income inequality in self-employment. By disaggregating self-employment into three occupational classes, it shows the gender segregation within self-employment—women were concentrated in the financially least rewarding segment—and identifies it as a main source of the gender income inequality. It examines a range of determinants of participation in self-employment—family structure, family background, and career history—and how their gender-specific effects contributed to gender segregation. Although using data from a 1996 national survey, this study captures two key processes ...

Critical Pedagogy As Interrupting Thingification, Shiera S. Malik Dec 2012

Critical Pedagogy As Interrupting Thingification, Shiera S. Malik

Shiera S el-Malik

This article suggests that a critical pedagogy meets students where they are and recognizes the ideological conditions of existence of both teachers and students as subjects. Using a set of examples that range from the author’s own experiences both inside and outside of the classroom, an Emile Zola novel (The Ladies Paradise) and Timothy Mitchell’s world-as-exhibition, the article suggests that critical pedagogies expose, and potentially disrupt, contemporary knowledge practices. They are experi- ments in intimacy designed to unseat practices that yield to processes of thingification.

Examining The Legal And Policy Frameworks Regulating The Behavior Of Politicians And Political Parties In Sierra Leone, Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Fiifi Edu-Afful

Emmanuel Kwesi Aning

This article critically examines the legal and policy frameworks that exist to regulate the behavior of politicians (elected or appointed) and political parties. More importantly, this article identifies the existing loopholes within the legislation that can pose major threats to the growth of democracy in Sierra Leone. Consequently, the article begins by briefly outlining the legal and institutional frameworks governing political party formation and as well as party financing. Additionally, we review the existing mechanisms for eliciting compliance from all forms of political behavior and reflect the level of commitment -both institutional and structural- that individual politicians and political parties ...

Legal And Policy Frameworks Regulating The Behavior Of Politicians And Political Parties In Ghana: Interrogating Institutional Mechanisms, Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Fiifi Edu-Afful Dec 2012

Legal And Policy Frameworks Regulating The Behavior Of Politicians And Political Parties In Ghana: Interrogating Institutional Mechanisms, Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Fiifi Edu-Afful

Emmanuel Kwesi Aning

This article explores the legal and policy frameworks that exist to regulate the behaviors of politicians (elected or appointed) and political parties and highlight the existing loopholes in the legislation that can pose major threats to the legitimacy of democratic politics and governance in Ghana. The article is organized as follows: Section one reviews the existing established mechanisms for eliciting compliance with respect to political party formation and financing in Ghana. We argue that when it comes to the array of laws purposively crafted to regulate the behavior of political parties and politicians, Ghana has many of such laws. However ...

Social Media Networks And Tactical Globalization: An Exploratory Case Study Of Contesting Political "Space" In Singapore, Vicente C. Reyes Jr Dec 2012

Social Media Networks And Tactical Globalization: An Exploratory Case Study Of Contesting Political "Space" In Singapore, Vicente C. Reyes Jr

Dr. Vicente C Reyes Jr

This exploratory article attempts to interrogate the emerging responses of the traditionally powerful Singaporean city-state as it is confronted by the upsurge of social media networks. This inquiry is premised on the assertion that Singapore’s city-state, historically dominated by the People’s Action Party (pap), acts as an overall enforcer by employing tactical globalization. In its drive towards development and nation-building, the city-state has identified protecting social cohesion among its diverse and multicultural population as one of its key vulnerabilities. Globalization, particularly heralded by the increasingly unpredictable electronic media, is anathema to the ethos of a city-state that leaves ...

The Inescapable Ocean: On Understanding Australia's Strategic Geography, Chris Rahman Dec 2012

The Inescapable Ocean: On Understanding Australia's Strategic Geography, Chris Rahman

Chris Rahman

The development of a distinct maritime school of strategic thought for Australia is an important initiative by the current Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, RAN. Griggs has explicitly attempted to surmount the intellectual obstacle posed by an increasingly sterile defence debate that has witnessed the growth of an expeditionary school of strategic thought as a counter to the longstanding continental school, dominant in Australian policy since 1986. Instead, Griggs has rejected the ‘binary’ approach of this debate to suggest an alternative, maritime, school.1 In so doing it is essential to pay due consideration to Australia’s strategic ...

Issues Of Citizenship, National Identity And Political Socialization In Singapore: Implications To The Singapore Education System, Vicente C. Reyes Jr

Dr. Vicente C Reyes Jr

This inquiry attempts to address the question: How has the Singapore city-state used its education system in integrating three important cornerstones of nation-building? Using selected data from the National Orientations of Singaporeans Survey complemented by policy documents, this article explores three specific questions: (1) How is citizenship education pursued? (2) How is national identity forged? And (3) How is political socialization engendered? The inquiry concludes with challenges that the Singapore education system faces as it tries to address its nation-building project.

The History Of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict – Comparing Israeli Documented Sources To Palestinian Oral Ones (Hebrew), Rafi Nets-Zehngut Dec 2012

The History Of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict – Comparing Israeli Documented Sources To Palestinian Oral Ones (Hebrew), Rafi Nets-Zehngut

Dr. Rafi Nets-Zehngut (Israel)

Exclusionary Vs. Inclusionary Populism: Comparing The Contemporary Europe And Latin America, Cas Mudde, Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser Dec 2012

Exclusionary Vs. Inclusionary Populism: Comparing The Contemporary Europe And Latin America, Cas Mudde, Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser

Cas Mudde

Although there is a lively academic debate about contemporary populism in Europe and Latin America, almost no cross-regional research exists on this topic. This article aims to fill this gap by showing that a minimal and ideological definition of populism permits us to analyse current expressions of populism in both regions. Moreover, based on a comparison of four prototypical cases (FN/Le Pen and FPÖ/Haider in Europe and PSUV/Chávez and MAS/Morales in Latin America), we show that it is possible to identify two regional subtypes of populism: exclusionary populism in Europe and inclusionary populism in Latin America.

Facilitating War-Affected Young Mothers’ Reintegration: Lessons From A Participatory Action Research Study In Liberia, Sierra Leone, And Uganda., Miranda E. Worthen, G. Onyango, A. Veale, M. Wessells, S. Mckay Dec 2012

Facilitating War-Affected Young Mothers’ Reintegration: Lessons From A Participatory Action Research Study In Liberia, Sierra Leone, And Uganda., Miranda E. Worthen, G. Onyango, A. Veale, M. Wessells, S. Mckay

Miranda E. Worthen

Young women and girls formerly associated with armed forces and armed groups face multiple challenges. Many become pregnant or have children while they are associated and face stigma and marginalization upon reintegration into civilian communities. This article describes a multi-year participatory action research study that took place in twenty communities in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and northern Uganda from 2006 – 2009 and included more than 650 young mother participants. We find that this community-based approach to reintegration improved the wellbeing of young mother participants and their children. We discuss the challenges and limitations of conducting participatory action research with war-affected young ...
