Corruption, Democracy And Asia-Pacific Countries, Neil Campbell, Shrabani Saha Oct 2013

Corruption, Democracy And Asia-Pacific Countries, Neil Campbell, Shrabani Saha

Neil Campbell

This paper argues that the relationship between democracy and corruption is nonmonotonic. When a country shifts from autocratic rule to highly imperfect democracy (an ‘electoral democracy’) it is frequently perceived that the level of corruption increases. Conversely, when the democracy level is already relatively high (approaching ‘mature democracy’) an increase in the level of democracy is typically expected to decrease the level of corruption. To assist with our discussion of these issues, before going on to the empirical part of the paper, we look specifically at the case of South Korea to illustrate how corruption responded to an increasing level ...

Australian Defence Force Transformation: The Hardened And Networked Army, Stuart Murray Sep 2013

Australian Defence Force Transformation: The Hardened And Networked Army, Stuart Murray

Stuart Murray

Extract:
In the field of international relations there exists controversy over whether or not a Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) is occurring. This case employs the recent transformation of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to validate the 'revolution' argument. As Australia's role in the Asia Pacific security environment grows, there is a correlative need for its military to evolve. The ADF has embraced change, primarily through its Future Warfighting Concept (FWC) and the doctrine of a Hardened and Networked Army (HNA).

Open For Business: Australian Uranium For Sale!, Stuart Murray

Stuart Murray

Extract:
Fossil fuels negatively contribute to global warming and climate change. While the short-term impact of nuclear energy is more positive, it is no less controversial in terms of climate change. According to the Director of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed El Baradei, investing in nuclear energy technologies is particularly attractive to developing countries where energy demand outstrips energy supply and 'energy security, air pollution and greenhouse gases are priorities' (IAEA 2006). Nuclear weapons proliferation, and environmental safety, however, remain as global concerns. As a result, nuclear energy technologies and uranium exports to fuel that technology continue to attract ...

Push For Independence: The West Papuan Nation, Stuart Murray Sep 2013

Push For Independence: The West Papuan Nation, Stuart Murray

Stuart Murray

Extract:
The Papuan Island has long been subject to distant rule. In the nineteenth century, it drew rapacious attention from resource hungry European colonisers including Germany, Britain, Japan and The Netherlands. In 1975, the eastern half of the island became the independent nation of Papua New Guinea. The fate of the western half remains disputed. The Dutch ruled Western Papua until 1963, eventually ceding their sovereignty to Indonesia. Since then, the territory has been subject to the distant and occasionally tyrannical rule of the Indonesian Government. Scores of West Papuans, however, continue to exert claims for an independent West Papuan ...

Comparing Local Models Of Agrarian Transition In China, Qian Forrest Zhang May 2013

Comparing Local Models Of Agrarian Transition In China, Qian Forrest Zhang

Qian Forrest ZHANG

The development of markets and the penetration of capital into agriculture have started the agrarian transition in rural China, which is transforming smallholding, household-based agriculture into various forms of capitalistic production. This again raises in a new historical and social context the long-debated question in the agrarian transition literature: Can family farms survive the onslaught of capitalist agriculture based on wage labor and what shapes the confrontation between family farms and agro-capital? I argue that it is the local political economy—rather than some natural obstacles in agriculture to the penetration of capitalism—that shapes this confrontation and gives rise ...

The Better-Than-Average Effect In Hong Kong And The United States: The Role Of Personal Trait Importance And Cultural Trait Importance, Kim-Pong Tam, Angela K.-Y. Leung, Young-Hoon Kim, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Al K. C. Au Apr 2013

The Better-Than-Average Effect In Hong Kong And The United States: The Role Of Personal Trait Importance And Cultural Trait Importance, Kim-Pong Tam, Angela K.-Y. Leung, Young-Hoon Kim, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Al K. C. Au

Ka Yee Angela LEUNG

People tend to make self-aggrandizing social comparisons on traits that are important to the self. However, existing research on the better-than-average effect (BTAE) and trait importance does not distinguish between personal trait importance (participants’ ratings of the importance of certain traits to themselves) and cultural trait importance (participants’ perceptions of the importance of the traits to the cultural group to which they belong). We demonstrated the utility of this distinction by examining the joint effects of personal importance and cultural importance on the BTAE among Hong Kong Chinese and American participants. Results showed that the BTAE was more pronounced for ...

Revisiting Authorisation Liability In Copyright Law, Cheng Lim Saw, Warren B. Chik Apr 2013

Revisiting Authorisation Liability In Copyright Law, Cheng Lim Saw, Warren B. Chik

Warren Bartholomew Chik

In this article, the authors revisit the origins and purpose of the law on authorising infringement and propose that the word “authorise” should bear the dictionary meaning of “sanction, approve, countenance”, in lieu of the phrase “grant or purported grant” as adopted in the CBS Songs Ltd v Amstrad Consumer Electronics plc ([1988] AC 1013) decision. The authors will also examine a non-exhaustive list of factors for determining authorisation liability. The suggested approach seeks to expand the scope of indirect copyright liability in Singapore, which is necessary in the face of increasing incursions into the sphere of copyright protection.

Palestinian Refugees, The Nation, And The Shifting Political Landscape, Randa Farah Dec 2012

Palestinian Refugees, The Nation, And The Shifting Political Landscape, Randa Farah

Randa R Farah Dr.

This article briefly examines the historical causes that led to the uprooting of the Palestinians in 1948, who today represent one of the longest and largest refugee situations in contemporary history. It then draws on field research on refugees in Jordan to trace some of the pertinent political and ideological shifts since the Palestinian Nakba. Its emphasis is on refugee camps, approached here as palimpsests refracting different historical periods, which for the purpose of this article are divided into: the Nasserite period in the 1950s and early 1960s, the heyday of the Palestinian national liberation movement, beginning in the mid-1960s ...
