Transit, Transition: Excavating J641 Vuj, Adrian T. Myers, Greg Bailey, Cassie Newland, Anna Nilsson, John Schofield

Adrian Myers

In July 2006 archaeologists from the University of Bristol and Atkins Heritage embarked on a contemporary archaeology project with a difference. We ‘excavated’ an old (1991) Ford Transit van, used by archaeologists and later by works and maintenance teams at the Ironbridge Museum. The object: to see what can be learnt from a very particular, common and characteristic type of contemporary place; to establish what archaeologists and archaeology can contribute to understanding the way society, and specifically we as archaeologists, use and inhabit these places; and to challenge and critique archaeologies of the contemporary past. In this report we describe ...

Beyond The Language-Literature Divide: Advanced Pedagogy For Training Graduate Students, Heather W. Allen Dec 2008

Beyond The Language-Literature Divide: Advanced Pedagogy For Training Graduate Students, Heather W. Allen

Heather Willis Allen

In this article, my objectives are 1) to discuss current practices and challenges related to the professional development of graduate students in foreign language departments as teachers; and 2) to provide a rationale for and description of a graduate seminar that serves to prepare future professors to develop students' analytical, critical, and argumentative capacities in the advanced undergraduate curriculum. It is my hope to encourage further discussion of integrative approaches to teaching foreign language at all levels by providing a concrete example of how graduate student professional development can include issues of language in advanced courses. A one-semester advanced foreign ...

In Search Of Relevance: The Role Of The Standards In The Undergraduate Foreign Language Curriculum, Heather W. Allen Dec 2008

In Search Of Relevance: The Role Of The Standards In The Undergraduate Foreign Language Curriculum, Heather W. Allen

Heather Willis Allen

Beyond the Standards' influence on K-12 language education policy and continued discussions of their relevance and application to FL instruction and assessment, in university-level FL departments the tangible impacts of the Standards in shaping curriculum and classroom instruction have not been wide-ranging. This chapter identifies and discusses three factors that have contributed to the reception of the Standards in higher education in general terms and, more specifically, in terms of the advanced undergraduate FL curriculum. Based on the discussion of these three factors, I respond to the question of whether the Standards provide a framework adequate in addressing the critical ...

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Doug Way, Sarah Beaubien, Julie Garrison Dec 2008

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Doug Way, Sarah Beaubien, Julie Garrison

Doug Way

In planning for a new library that will include a limited number of open stacks, Grand Valley State University librarians were asked to identify what materials should be reserved for the browsable shelves. To accomplish this, librarians considered user behavior by discipline, material types, shelving options and the role of core collections. This paper will discuss these issues as well as differences in how library resources are located and the impact of new discovery tools, such as Innovative Interface's Encore, Bowker’s Syndetics, and Google’s Book Search on redefining browsability. The paper will also include a discussion of ...

Corralling Digital Collections From Across The Region: A Survey Of Digital Collections In The Pacific Northwest, Amy Vecchione, Erin Passehl, R A. Stoddart

Rick A Stoddart

Digital collections exist at all types of institutions throughout the Northwest. Wrangling these online resources all into one place is quite a challenge. This poster will raise awareness of and highlight digital collections both big and small throughout the region. The range of collections spans from historical documents detailing local histories to the digital repositories of official government business to photographs and objects documenting Northwest culture (music, art, environment). Librarians and teachers will learn what collections are freely available to the public, relavant to the reference desk and classroom, and meaninful to patrons and students. Libraries, archives, and special collections ...

Individual Differences In Using Geometric And Featural Cues To Maintain Spatial Orientation: Cue Quantity And Cue Ambiguity Are More Important Than Cue Type, Jonathan W. Kelly, Timothy P. Mcnamara, Bobby Boddenheimer, Thomas H. Carr, John J. Rieser Dec 2008

Rieser

Jonathan W. Kelly

Two experiments explored the role of environmental cues in maintaining spatial orientation (sense of selflocation and direction) during locomotion. Of particular interest was the importance of geometric cues (provided by environmental surfaces) and featural cues (nongeometric properties provided by striped walls) in maintaining spatial orientation. Participants performed a spatial updating task within virtual environments containing geometric or featural cues that were ambiguous or unambiguous indicators of self-location and direction. Cue type (geometric or featural) did not affect performance, but the number and ambiguity of environmental cues did. Gender differences, interpreted as a proxy for individual differences in spatial ability and ...

Factors Leading To Success Or Abandonment Of Open Source Commons: An Empirical Analysis Of Sourceforge.Net Projects, Charles M. Schweik, Robert English, Sandra Haire

Charles M. Schweik

Open source software is produced cooperatively by groups of people who work together via the Internet. The software produced usually becomes the “common property” of the group and is freely distributed to anyone in the world who wants to use it. Although it may seem unlikely, open source collaborations, or “commons,” have grown phenomenally to become economically and socially important. But what makes open source commons succeed at producing something useful, or alternatively, what makes them become abandoned before achieving success? This paper reviews the theoretical foundations for understanding open source commons and briefly describes our statistical analysis of over ...
